Recruiting Forum Football Talk III

Football program isn’t dying a slow death. It’s already dead. It happened quickly and it happened with one decision - the hiring of Derek Dooley.

Been a dead program hoping for a miracle to bring it back to life ever since.
Sadly agree. Dooley put the program on life support. Jones brought it back to stable condition. Albeit temporarily. Pruitt may have put it in the grave. You can only have so much McDonald's.

Butch ALMOST brought it back to stable condition. Let’s not just brush aside the Vols first ever 0-8 SEC record under his tutelage.

That’s about as dead as dead can get.

It's the cumulative effect of bad decisions that has brought UT to this point, not any one bad decision made by any one person.

People are looking for someone to blame when there are many. Way too many people have made way too many bad decisions over way too long at UT-- and this has led us to where we are in our sports programs. Some can turn around faster than others.

This is the reality none of us want to acknowledge. Miss state and ole miss and Missouri have higher levels of success in football since Dooley was hired.

AD (maybe boosters too, Idk) got exactly what they asked for with Dooley = a losing HC. How anyone associated with the program ever OK’d that hire is beyond me. Every booster should’ve threatened to pull their support as soon as his name came up. F’n idiots.

Ready to purr anytime. Dead programs don’t go to bowls. We’re #1 in manufactured drama and we dominate Twitter with it. THAT not a mediocre trend is the source of our nationwide ridicule.

Agree but it started with Dooley.

Laughable that guy even got a look. Coming off a losing season at La Tech and losing seasons 2/3 he was there with an overall losing record as a HC hahahaha.

Every one associated with that decision, including boosters, should never be in charge of any decision ever.

Yep that was the start of the downfall.

Dead compared to what we once were. Nationally relevant to finishing in the bottom half of our own division. We’re dead like Nebraska is dead.

Spot on. The boogeyman is actually multiple male and female participants over two decades or so. A steady march to mediocrity or worse.

You don't win anything self reporting to the ncaa. UT made their job a lot easier, they'll for sure be made into an example.
It shows internal control is there. That is big for the NCAA.

From an audit perspective, the ability and willingness to catch errors or fraud and report them is half the battle. If an auditor/ncaa catches it for you, and worse, you knew about it...you're effed.

Did the university instruct Bruce to lie, thus committing a level 1 violation, in order to cover up a level 2 violation? The answer to that would be no. Bruce decided to do that. Could the university have handled it better? Probably, but lying to the NCAA is 100% on Bruce Pearl himself. So you're mistaken for blaming the actions of Bruce Pearl on UT. He made a choice. No one told him to lie, he chose to. I don't know what world you live in, but in mine, people are responsible for the choices they make and trying to blame others for your own screw-ups is weak ass ****.
I don’t care anything about Bruce Pearl..... The university is responsible for itself and its inaction cost us the growth the program was experiencing....I guarantee you if the same thing happened at Auburn that Bruce would still be there and the program growing..... Just like Pruitt..... I don’t care that we fired Pruitt..... I like that we are not having to his buyout..... I absolutely hate that we turned ourselves in hurting our program in the process.

This Barnes bashing is really sickening to me...it makes no f'n sense to people like me who have watched the UT BB program be the dregs of the SEC for sooooo many years...outside of a few decent little runs here and there we have sucked nearly my whole life..not like these morons define sucking, like Wade Houston level of pure suckitude..
They just don't know McG. I remember sitting by my huge 80s speaker as a kid and listening to every game as we won 4 games one year. That was UT bball to me most of life. The common joke growing up was how the Lady Vols would run the men's team.

To be where we are now is almost unimaginable. Those that don't get it never will. They have been spoiled by recent history and mistaking it for the norm.

Looking back, you just have to shake your head. The strength of the brand has kept UT treading water longer than most schools could've. Losing to more talented teams is one thing, but people have gotten really tired of the embarrassing lack of competitiveness and the underachieving teams that find ways to do less with more.

Barnes is a decent coach. Above average but the game is changing on him and he is slow to adapt.

But his biggest weakness is that he can’t recruit a full squad at the same time. There are always weaknesses- mainly at PG or the No. 5.

I would like to see Kim English take over eventually.

I think the HT family is seeing what's happening and that has fueled the possible return for spring practice. But AFAIK he's still noncommittal-- he's not back till he's wearing that orange on the practice field.
Not a single reason for this cat to not be on campus finding out firsthand what the deal is.

It’s like he’s trying to online date Tennessee when the team is sitting in the restaurant waiting for some face to face time

They really liked Dooley bc of his dad.... we almost hired him the year before bc he had a big turn around at LA Tech so we hired him the next year when we got desperate.

That's all it was. Hiring Derek hoping he would turn into Vince. Trying to polish apples that fell far from the tree.
