This Barnes bashing is really sickening to me...it makes no f'n sense to people like me who have watched the UT BB program be the dregs of the SEC for sooooo many years...outside of a few decent little runs here and there we have sucked nearly my whole life..not like these morons define sucking, like Wade Houston level of pure suckitude..

MORANS. Having to clean up some of McGill's misspelling. I have to follow him around the message board trying to help the guy.

The same people who argue we are still the equivalent of Florida, Georgia, and Bama in football will mock younger fans for their desire to be better in basketball. While in the lifetime of current recruits and younger fans, TN basketball is a much better program than TN football.

In football, since 2010, we are 66-69. 3-30 against Florida, Georgia, and Bama, who some claim are our rivals.

In basketball, the last 3 coaches (excluding Tyndall's 1-year stint) have all made at least one Sweet 16. Pearl made 2 Sweet Sixteens and an Elite Eight. Cuonzo and Rick both have a Sweet 16 appearance.

Our football coaches over that same time-span? Late career Fulmer, Kiffin, Dooley, Butch, Pruitt, and Heupel, who have a combined 4 seasons (2 by Fulmer and 2 by Butch) with 8 or more regular-season wins over that 15-year time-span.

Is our basketball job elite? No. But like Rob Lewis said in a recent podcast, this job will be highly sought after when it comes open. Our football job was not. The university has shown it will support basketball and the last 3 coaches (excluding Tyndall) have shown you can win here. Basketball recruits have also seen the basketball program win, be competitive in the tournament, develop kids, and be #1 in the country. Football recruits have seen us be the laughing stock of college football while wasting away top recruiting classes.

I like Rick, but he isn't winning you a championship. He isn't worth top 5 money. He isn't the only one that can win at this job. Yet some believe we should worship him for underachieving while some also hold this crazy opinion that we are still an elite football program. We are not elite at anything right now. But we are much closer to being elite in basketball than football.

I have few expectations for the football program and have had that view for years. We are a fading football program dying a slow death. But basketball is a rising program that I and many younger fans have higher expectations for.

Football program isn’t dying a slow death. It’s already dead. It happened quickly and it happened with one decision - the hiring of Derek Dooley.

Been a dead program hoping for a miracle to bring it back to life ever since.

That’s the difference between us and Auburn...... Here..... Bruce gets caught having a Barbacue....3 year show cause and we lose our coach....!At Auburn..... they are paying to funnel players there....he is still coaching with no penalties for Auburn.
He would have survived the barbecue with a slap on the wrist. He decided to complicate things by committing a level 1 violation (lying to the NCAA) in an attempt to cover for a level 2 violation. One of the most boneheaded decisions ever, and one that lies squarely on his shoulders. People need to stop blaming the university for a decision Bruce made. No one told him to lie. He made that decision himself.

It’s okay to be critical of the 5th highest paid coach in basketball who is one and done in the tournament and underachieved this season. I still like Barnes and think he can figure it out. But he needs to figure it out.
Totally agree with this. It's the folks saying we need to move on who I think are over reacting.

It is 100% on the university..... they knew about the picture and knew what was going on..... a good university would sit down with their coach and go over what the NCAA had and how to approach it in the interview....State comes into my building every year and I go over with them how to answer questions... what to say and how to avoid some answers...

It’s not about Bruce Pearl..... it’s about the best interests of the university and the program.... The university failed miserably.

Did the university instruct Bruce to lie, thus committing a level 1 violation, in order to cover up a level 2 violation? The answer to that would be no. Bruce decided to do that. Could the university have handled it better? Probably, but lying to the NCAA is 100% on Bruce Pearl himself. So you're mistaken for blaming the actions of Bruce Pearl on UT. He made a choice. No one told him to lie, he chose to. I don't know what world you live in, but in mine, people are responsible for the choices they make and trying to blame others for your own screw-ups is weak ass ****.

Critical is one thing. Calling for his firing is dumb.

Some people are letting their emotions do their typing. While they might claim otherwise this is not about the University of Tennessee; It’s about themselves. They’re suffering from the same ailment that afflicts all sore losers. If someone can’t handle taking a loss, no matter how big, no matter how often, without pouring out their hurt for the whole world to see then that’s on them. The cure for this has been posted many times in this very thread yet here we are.

Guys, if you can’t handle the disappointment of being a Vols fan the simple fact is you must not be drinking enough. jmo.

Guess i'm that way about football, sometimes basketball. But realize we arent gonna do better than Barnes.

I would love for Rob Lewis to throw out reasonable coaches who would come to UT. We aren’t getting a current top 25 coach here. It’s pretty simple, and it’s based on history. If you want to rely on White hiring someone like a Nate Oats, then fine. But history has proven that the percentages aren’t good to hire a good midmajor coach.

I don’t know how anyone can state this as fact.

With reasonable intuition, I am of the belief that the university sat down with Bruce, and he lied to his superiors. Therefore, once it was found out that he lied to the NCAA, they didn’t have sympathy for him. Imagine being a manager over someone who lied to you before a third party comes in to investigate. If you can’t trust that person yourself, then you have problems with your relationship. What else will that person do? It’s not like the university had it out for their coach who had taken them to 6 straight NCAAT’s. That’s a ridiculous notion.

This is the reality none of us want to acknowledge. Miss state and ole miss and Missouri have higher levels of success in football since Dooley was hired.
