I think Org St and Ok St are decent matchups that we can go small against and as long as we dont have too many turnover we can beat them. But Illinois is a much more complete team that has a big that can be dominant. I see one of our famous scoring droughts sinking us against them.
I dont think Illinois will make it to the sweet 16.

Springer nor Keon are PGs. They shouldn’t be handling the ball that much. Keon especially. He’s a slasher not a ball handler.

Although I do agree they’ve been loose with the ball.

Springer should be our PG. Even though he can create, he also has good vision. Will be asked to handle the ball at the next level.

As a 2/3 in the NBA, Keon will need to handle it as well. Barnes specifically let Keon bring the ball up before the conference schedule to get him to do it. I don't expect them to be great, but they have to do it in today's game. The NBA runs so much iso plays that guys have to handle the rock. We have put them in iso as well. Halfway through the year, I thought Keon needed to work on hand strength, like catching rapid fire tennis balls. Just really loose with the handle.

To be fair I think looking at both Springer & Keon CRB & staff probably thought they might be here longer than a season, especially with the COVID mess. I still think both could improve their games with another year here, but don't know if either will turn down a 1st round opportunity.

What's really hurt is we've not landed a real big that's been a contributor. I'd even settle for a 1 and done at this point. But missing on Kent, Burns, Walker, and all the countless recruits that went elsewhere instead of coming here has been a pain. Especially seeing inferior coaches have a few 6'10" or bigger guys that have impacts when on the court for their teams.

The kids have to cash that lottery ticket...I don't like it, but if the NBA is dumb enough to do it, then they pretty much have to go take it...even I understand that.

Well is anyone surprised? When we hired this guy we knew it would tank... we knew the '22 instate class would go elsewhere... everyone got the feels because he's good at calling an offense, but there's much more to college football than that... and right now we are seeing the result... He's never been a P5 head coach and no one knows what to think about how he and his staff will do together in the SEC...
Most of the staff are going to have to prove they belong and can handle this pressure... Hopefully kids are waiting to see what happens this fall... that's all we have right now... after Lyle and Gump torched the place, this is what is left over...On paper, the staff looks solid with a lot of upside. Proof will be on the field. Why would any elite kid want to take a chance here right now unless they bleed orange and just wanna be a Vol?
CJH is going to have to prove he can develop existing talent and do more with less, because that is our roster right now... LESS. If they make some noise this fall, then I think we will see some kids start to trickle in, but I wouldn't expect anything lower than 25-30th for this upcoming class...
Plowman and White made the bed...

All I ever see on this site is “TN recruits itself” Which btw is total BS.

This was always my biggest concern for Hypefull.

Sark doesn’t seem to have trouble recruiting to Texas...only been on the job a couple of months. Just saying.

🍎 and 🍊

While I do think Heupel doesn’t care for recruiting the 5-star divas... We are in a current stare down with the NCAA. We give other schools waaaay too much ammunition.

Springer has so much trouble getting by the first defender. My only gripe about him. I kind of blame Barnes' scheme though. It sets up straight 1v1s against guys that have prepared to guard who they are guarding. More ball screens, to force more switches and mismatches and general confusion and scrambling on the defense would make it a lot easier for not just Springer, but all of our guards to get by the first guy and create plays.

Texas football isn’t awaiting NCAA penalty.

Won 10 games as recently as 2018.

Is 32-18 over previous 4 seasons.

Meanwhile Vols are awaiting NCAA penalty after firing half of the last staff for violations.

Won 10 games in 2007.

Is 20-27 over last 4 seasons.

Almost like those two situations are nothing alike. Weird.

How fast is Heupel's offense? Don't blink. It's basically a 2-min offense for the full game although it looks like they may have tried to run a 1-min offense against LSU. The Sec/Drive are the number of seconds on average for each possession in that particular game. The Score % is how often the drive or possession ended in either a TD or made FG. A Scoring % of 40% or above was a win with one exception. In Oct of 2020 they lost on a missed game winning FG against Memphis with 19 seconds to go and the ball on the Memphis 22 yard line. Less than 40% scoring and they were 2-7 with 5 of those 7 losses to AP Top 25 teams. We should probably keep in mind that 247 has the UCF roster talent ranked about a dozen or so spots below Vanderbilt.

Hmmm...they both fired coaches this season. Maybe I should go with Auburn then...that work for you? I was just making a comment that people on this site are always saying “TN recruits itself” like it’s the 90’s. “I don’t care about a coach that recruits”

I don’t think the NCAA penalty is a big of a deal as everyone else when it comes to recruiting. I think the fact that TN hasn’t been relevant during current players lifetime is more impactful.

Curiosity- Throwing out approximate number, assuming we try to sign around 25 per year, about how many football scholarship offers do we give out?

It’s difficult to follow all these kids for a given year. Could someone compile a 22’ list of offers with basic bio (state, position, ranking)? Or is that list to large? Lazy guys like me would be interested in a thread that combined these guys.

Long story short...WGWTFA!

According to the rivals database we currently have 354 offers out to 2022 prospects. Open the link below and click on search and it will give you a list of those prospects. Obviously most of those offers likely came from the previous staff. I don't know of an easy way to differentiate between staffs. Hope this helps.

Rivals.com

edit - this works on my PC but I checked it on my Iphone and the search data doesn't transfer. Rivals has a database that you can search for offers by school. You can probably figure it out from there if the link doesn't work for you.

Sarkisian is a noted recruiter in his own right...

but

Texas recruits itself. 😎

His primary focus currently is flipping Ewers back and I predict he’s successful, but if he avoids losing legacy OL studs to Bama like the Brockemeyer Twins, he’ll already be ahead. You’re comparing two VASTLY different situations btw.

They both got where they wanted to in the first half of the Bama game and against UF.

All things equal we do. Things ain’t equal. If the utterance vexes you so, feel free to test that Auburn experiment.

Because we kept the tempo up. 2nd half against Bama they forced us to play half court offense and it bottled them up. It seems they both only have a blow by move. If they don't get by on the initial move, Springer will try to spin and that often doesn't work and winds up in a turnover because the floor is poorly spaced.

Lol. So Texas is in the exact same situation as TN? If so, please explain how.

It’d be beyond idiotic to abandon our NCs as a recruiting tool. Those are the very foundation of our tradition. Without them we are no better than a South Carolina or Vandy. It’s a tangible connection to a time where we were elite and evidence that it can be done here again if only the right people are given the keys.
Agree

I do cringe with the 98 focus, but to not single that out and look collectively is a nod to tradition

KenPom has us ranked #4 in adjusted D, which is crucial stat in the ncaa. Interestingly, no team has ever won a title with a defensive ranking higher than #20 on KenPom.

He also has ranked #21 overall compared to OK State at #30. He has the Beavs at #85 overall.
I love KenPom's Luck factor. There can be a ton of variance in basketball over a play or two.

Oregon St is 38th luckiest (out of 357 teams, so top ~11%)
Okie St is 89th (top 25%)

We are slightly "unlucky" at 199th.

Looking for sleepers? Texas Tech is 333rd and UConn is 307th.

I don’t think you are giving it as much weight as you should. The end result may not be as bad. But the unknown of that is significant. We have committed multiple Level 1 infractions. Pruitt had us a great class last summer. Any doofus can recruit here.... as evidenced by every doofus that’s been here for the past decade.
