2 center of mass that is visible then take the head shot
The "two to the chest, one to the head" trend found footing in the LE community after SC Trooper Mark Coates was murdered. In theory, that one shot to the brain will result in instantaneous incapacitation. In practice, and as we've seen on numerous occasions, placing that 3rd shot on target is all but impossible in the chaotic, often panicky, adrenaline-charged hyperactivity of a gunfight.
The better strategy, IMO, is to put that 3rd shot into (as DTH so eloquently stated) the pelvic girdle. It's a bigger target; it's less likely to be bobbing around; and if you miss the bullet is more likely to hit the ground than a missed headshot that might kill an innocent 100 yards down range. For me, if/when that 230 grain hollowpoint hits the pelvis, it's going to shatter a major load-bearing piece of bone, and there's a good chance it will sever a major vein or artery. In other words, down you go and out you go, within a matter of seconds. So I'll take the higher percentage shot.
To each their own, but I don't shoot often enough to have a high degree of confidence that I could hit the head at any distance in the middle of a vulgar gunfight, so when I do shoot (practice), it's "two in the living room, and one in the basement".
It's old school stuff, and I know you get it, but I'm a fan of "throw the heaviest round you can; throw it at the biggest piece of the bad guy you can see; and keep shooting it until it stops moving". I'm not going to limit myself to 3 rounds in a gunfight. That's another reason why I always carry at least one full reload (off duty), and usually two. It would likely suck to run out of ammo before I ran out of things that needed to be shot.
Y'all be safe out there...
