Rick Barnes discussion [merged]

Barnes is washed up, too set in his ways and doesn’t accept responsibility for the way his team plays
He is recruiting very well. You should watch some video of Kennedy Chandler. He has several videos available on YouTube. I never thought Tennessee was capable of signing the best point guard in high school basketball... but somehow, Barnes did.

How do you know he would miss the tourney at UT When more than one team from the conference gets in?

Bruce Pearl, Nate Oats, and Will Wade made more NCAAT’s than he did at smaller schools, all in 4 years instead of 10. It’s just a gamble...when you run off a coach whose made 24. Lol.

I cannot argue his recruiting has definitely improved, however, his failure to recruit and keep a decent big man on campus has killed us. Tell me one good post player he has recruited besides Grant?

Well I'm not sure that he is a good developer of talent. And, his roster has holes everywhere. He always throws his players under the bus and never takes any blame - puts it all on his players.

Lol. And calling Barnes a gym teacher? Hahaha.

Rick Barnes to me is the CBB equivalent of Philip Rivers as an NFL QB. Great at his job and way more success than failure, but never quite pushes into the truly elite tier. Probably makes the HOF due to longevity and sustained success over the course of a long career, but you look back and say "I feel like there should have been a little more".

I think we are lucky to have Barnes and he will be here for as long as he wants. However, I don't think he is above reproach or criticism either.

Criticism is fine as is disagreeing with the criticism. But one poster in particular is obsessed with bashing Barnes and a handful of others don’t have a clue how quickly and how far the program can fall from where it sits right now.

There are just as many defending Barnes blindly as there are bashing him incessantly. Every village has idiots. The Barnes haters get loud after a loss and the Barnes sunshine pumpers get loud after a win.

The football program has had decades of piss poor coaching.

When the basketball team finally gets a good coach that’s worth keeping up with, some folks want to run him out.

Best post of the night!

Barnes has never been anything special. He’d never came here if Texas hadn’t fired his ass and he looked to run out first chance he got (UCLA). Why some of you love him so much is beyond me. It’s just business to him and it is with me. He needs to win at the level he’s paid. Thus far he hasn’t.

TN is 15-6 and this is a TN website. It’s reasonable to expect more support than bashing.

One poster in particular is absolutely obsessed with attacking Barnes. It’s chronic. Not simply an occasional criticism. It’s psychotic.

I don’t consider defending Barnes after the insane criticisms to be pumping sunshine.

The last NCAA tourney team (outside an upset in SEC tournament) Tennessee has beat is probably Missouri in game 1 of SEC season. Doesn’t that cause you concern?

And if Barnes had never came here, lord knows how bad this program would be right now.

Probably battling Vandy for last place in the SEC.

I’m less concerned if the 7 man rotation gets close to 100%. Seems like we’ve been short a player for about a month know and some are playing hurt. Springer’s ankle might be okay by the NCAAT. I don’t expect to have Fulk anywhere close to 100%, but if JJJ heals up that gives TN a good option with him at the 4. Vescovi’s and Pons’ injuries don’t seem as severe, but Pons hasn’t seemed to be as active since he messed up his leg.

We were very fortunate to hire Barnes, there is no doubt about it. He has been successful at every stop, including in power conferences within the Big East, ACC and The Big 12. Does he bring the excitement that Pearl created. Absolutely not. Pearl took an underachieving program and went to 6 straight NCAA tournaments. He also was a bit of a clown with questionable ethics.

Last year, losing Bone a year early, along with Turner’s injury really hurt, and damaged our ability to transition from the Grant/Admiral duo. Had to start over in some respects. James was highly regarded but didn’t walk in the door with the temperament to carry a team. Would have been unfair to expect it. Springer and Johnson, also were great gets, but Barnes is responsible for the surrounding cast and it is lacking or non-existent in some areas. He has to own that, but he is a good coach. That is undeniable.

6th season for Barnes and probably his 3rd best UT team, all things considered. Will we ever sniff the Final Four with him at the helm? Who knows? But I think he can build a competitive, winning team, every year and if he continues to recruit higher echelon players, our chances to get to the last weekend will improve.

Perhaps a pipe dream but a lineup with Chandler, Springer, Johnson, James and Fulkerson would be fun to watch. Fulkerson could play his supporting role he is more comfortable with and we could surround him with 4 skilled perimeter players. Big teams may maul us but there are fewer of those teams around the country.

After Tyndall, I have my doubts

Well, the same guy who wanted to keep Dooley, hired Jones, hired Tyndall.
In all fairness, Tyndall kept Hobbs, Richardson & Moore here, brought in Scholfield & Punter and had Bone signed. He wasn’t all that bad.

I laugh at someone saying a coach is not special when that coach has been to the NCAAT 25 out of 33 years with 4 different schools. Then, in hindsight, Texas has been no better than when he left and Clemson hasn’t either.

We’ve had some frustrating games, but we also have some sad fans.
