Tony Elliott Appears To Be a Target

I understand where people are coming from with this but we heard the exact same thing about Pruitt. If they want everyone on board, they're going to have to find an experienced head coach who's had some success. Fair or not, that's just how it is.

3 of the last 4 hires for HC we have made have all had that cherished HC experienced and they all failed.

That's what I'm saying. Given our situation, we aren't going to be a team littered with 4 and 5 star players. Not for a few years anyway. No blue chip athlete is going to want to come here while we are under sanctions. We need someone who's had HC experience and who's used to having to overachieve with less talent. Elliott will not have the toys in the toy box to play with here and I'm afraid his prowess as an offensive "genius" will get exposed rather quickly.

Look if Elliot is who White wants then it is what it is. I'll get behind the hire and support him until he gives me a reason not to. But I'm not going to lie and pretend this excites me. It feels very underwhelming to me.
I know it's not happening, but it is ridiculously frustrating to think about how well Hugh Freeze's resume dovetails with our needs right now.

Or Chadwell's! Or Napier's! Or Campbell's! Or hell, even Kiffin's!

Chadwell came out of nowhere to produce this season and he has NCAA issues. Hugh is at Liberty for his moral issues and some NCAA issues. I'd love Campbell but good luck getting him to come here. If Kiffin would jump here after 1 year at Ole Miss it would basically confirm he hadn't changed as the person we despised 12 years ago. Napier, would definitely take him. He also might be holding out for a better situation.

Elliott is a major reason those 4-5 stars players went to small town in SC that is called Auburn with a lake.
I highly doubt that...Dabo was the main reason they went there because he showed he can win....I am sure Elliot did some recruiting of those players but in the end it was Dabo that brought them there....He is the closer.

To address the notion of OC for 1 year and clarify playing calling ... this is from a 2015 Clemson article:

Without further ado, let me put some of these questions and fears to rest: Tony Elliott calls all plays for the Clemson offense. How do I know that? When the two were announced as co-coordinators, Dabo, Scott, and Elliott all said as much in very plain language. On Sunday, Dec. 7th, just days after making the announcement that Scott and Elliott would be co-coordinators, Dabo announced that Tony Elliott would be calling plays. A few days later, in a joint press conference, Elliott discussed how he plans on calling the plays and managing the game. Scott went on to joke that he proposed they divide the play calling duties so that he could call first and second downs and Elliott could call third and fourth downs, but ends by saying that, "We figured this [Tony calling plays] was probably the best way." Tony Elliott was announced as the play caller almost immediately by Dabo. Tony and Jeff have both, consistently, confirmed that Elliott is the one calling the plays. There has been nothing said by anyone directly associated with Clemson to the contrary, so we have every reason to believe that Tony Elliott is the one calling plays for the Clemson Tiger offense. If it's really that straight forward, why has there been so much confusion?

Elliott has been on staff for 10 years. Is it possible he’s part of the reason for Dabo’s success?

We can recruit here, regardless of who is the coach. We can attract good assistants, regardless of our record.
Perhaps Elliott has great skills in communication and organization, and white can help him where he lacks experience.

Look at the last 3 failed coaches. They were arrogant and ignorant. They were insecure and didn’t want to hire good assistants, or didn’t trust them to do their jobs. Personality and ability to push players to greater heights is more of our problem than x/o’s or recruiting.

I’m keeping an open mind about anyone White selects.
👆🏾👆🏾The last sentence for me... 👍🏾👍🏾

He's only been the OC by himself for one year?!?!...He was co oc from 2015 to 2019 and last season was the first time he had done play calling on his own...This folks is going to be the disaster to end all disasters if they hire him...My god.

This could be a 3 dimensional chess hire. I'm not saying I hope it happens because I'd prefer not to take a chance on another coordinator either but hiring an African American at a big time old southern school is smart on several fronts given our current situation. First, it would score major woke points with the NCAA and second with the sports media, particularly ESPN, at a time we really need both. Finally, it also would be a real recruiting advantage, at least initially. Besides Elliot may turn out to be a great HC. If that's who White wants, that's what you hired White for. The boosters shouldn't meddle, that's been a huge part of the reason we've been in the toilet for 20 years anyway. The black eye the fanbase would receive if Vol Twitter Schiano'd an Elliot hire would probably be fatal.

I see your point but don’t see how he would hire a OC over a proven HC, could still say and I could be wrong, that he’s looking at Elliott in more of an assistant, I think he thinks in this situation that the head coach needs assistance to get through the sanctions and Elliott is the fall back guy if something happens to this said HC, JMO tho

I completely trust White to know the experience and intangibles needed for a good coach. He is 6 for 6 if you include basketball. One of those is Nate Oats, who is about to win the SEC for Alabama.

Volnation knows 2 things: a candidate’s W/L record, and that we’ve hired lousy coach with a similar background of whoever we select.

Debunked

There are reports Elliot is not the main guy they are going after just on the list. We’ll see

You don't think it's that Clemson has been the darling of college football for the last 5 years or so and are always in the playoff picture with very good QB's, not to mention Swinney.....
