Even though we are swinging for the fences and have an incredible AD with tons of experience and respect, along with a potential $7 mil to spend, we need to still understand gump left this place in shambles, so we have to temper our expectations... I truly think we are finally going to get the coach this program has needed for quite a while, but it just may not be one of the highest tier guys... we know who we are, but on the outside, the optics of this program and the condition we are in, are going to be a hard sell to someone on the outside looking in...
typically, this is pretty close to how i would go about thinking as well.

but they did the unthinkable with the AD hire....so i'm choosing to change my thinking in kind.

i think it's going to be widely known and accepted amongst anyone that's been paying attention that this particular job has a "known" set of challenges right off the bat. there are some unknowns in there as well, such as just exactly what will be coming down the line in terms of NCAA sanctions? we don't know that, but we do know White's family is very well respected, and connected....and that TN has included the NCAA in the process, did a thorough internal investigation, actied swiftly at all levels of the organization, and will likely self impose penalties long before the NCAA does....you can hedge a bet and say much of the worst of it will be in the rear view, relatively quickly.

so get past that, situationally, there's a true change of the guard, and for hte first time in many years, the AD, the Chancellor, the President all seem to be on the same page, and there also seems to be a real chance for there to be stability at the top. so if you're interested in building WITH this group, from ground zero.....you can feel relatively confident the situation you walk in to, is the situation you'll have for a while, adiminstratively...........i think that's important, b/c that has NOT been the case for a very long time.

if you step back and appreciate the entire picutre, you can't photoshop the warts away....but you can see there is potential here.

so, that will require a coach to see it that way too, and want to be part of it. but i think for the first time in a long time, we can sell that, legitimately.

for those reasons, i think the pool of coaches we're in is probably a tad better than any of us expect.

Long post incoming... This is a completely non scientific just for fun thing. But most coaches have their big coming out parties and hit their stride in year 2 or 3. Because Kiffin has only been at Ole Miss one year, I am using his record at FAU. Here are some stats from our possible HC hires, and their offense and defensive improvements made in year 2 of their jobs. Also included are top 25 games and total HC record. Who do you want? Edited to include Sonny Dykes, Lance Leipold, Scott Frost, PJ Fleck, Neal Brown, Tom Herman, and Scott Satterfield.

I don't really care if he isn't a fan of Tennessee athletics...I don't really enjoy hearing from sycophants. The irony is that if he isn't a fan, he still works for "state run media." Jimmy is an old school media guy who thinks the game is won by whoever has access to power. The media game is now more about value added analysis and commentary rather than being "the first" to break a story or a rumor.
Good take. I agree.

I don't think the media game is about either of those things anymore (although I wish you were right). It's about sensationalism, hot takes, and clicks, nothing else. How often are you getting thoughtful, intelligent analysis in media these days? Not often.
