Yeah probably, but just because he had a GM blow the team up above him doesn't mean he's a "proven" coach in any form or fashion. Maybe there is a good coach hiding behind a 38-60 record. I guess that number is all that matters. He had a 9-7 year in Buffalo, which is way above average. For all those clamoring for Mehlen while he was 7-5/8-4 at MSU....

There is so much parity in the NFL that you don't have to have more wins than losses to know what you are doing. I think if he could beat Belichik with Blake Bortles, he could probably beat Shane Beamer, Clark Lea, Eli Drinkwitz, Mark Stoops, and probably even Kirby Smart and Dan Mullen.

But, I won't change your mind, and that's ok.

You guys will be talking about who the next head coach will be for a while. Probably 2 more seasons.

Had a winning record twice in four years at Syracuse when they were still the Big East. 25-25 overall & a .388 winning percentage in the NFL.
As an NFL HC he had a winning record twice from 2013 to 2020. Think VN would be cool with another slow rebuild?
From 2013 to 2020 his offenses have ranked in the NFL (out of 32) - 19th, 26th, 18th, 23rd, 6th, 27th, 20th, and 28th.
From 2015 to 2020 his bread & butter, the offensive line, has ranked in the NFL (out of 32) - 19th, 22nd, 15th, 22nd, 26th, and 24th.
He quit on the Buffalo Bills in 2014 when there was a change in ownership, opted out of his contract instead of trying to forge new relationships with stakeholders (something similar that we have heard about Pruitt & Boosters)

I don't get the hype. He worked one year with Fulmer and has run an archaic offense since Buffalo & only recruited one 4* in his tenure at Syracuse. This would be an objectively terrible hire no matter how bad VN wants a shiny new coach (myself included.)

I'm just baffled because there is not and won't be a coaching search this year and most likely not next year either. Do some of you guys actually think pruitt will be fired?

As you keep saying and you are 100% correct about, the NFL is a level playing field. Tremendous parity, and it's constructed so that every team goes 8-8 every year. For purposes of discussing the Tennessee job, 9-7 at the Buffalo Bills one year isn't more impressive than Mullen's 7, 8, and occasionally 9 or 10 win seasons at Miss St over a 9-year period. College football is not level playing field, and isn't designed to be. You have to grade coaches that coach at smaller programs on a curve in college. The NFL is much more of a "you are what your record says you are" league than college football.

Honestly I just did this this morning because I was bored. I do think theres about a 30% of a new coach next year but only because of a combination of 1) me wanting one and 2) that attorney they got is known as the coach contract killer so who knows! But if it does happen and we select Douglas Marrone thats the end of Tennessee football.

Stop with the Gus talk! Geez!!! I've bled orange literally my entire life, and the best times of my life with the exception of the birth of my children have been around UT athletics. But I'm hanging on now as a fan by a thread as it is... Hiring Gus would completely cement my apathy towards UT football.

I agree that it could work. He needs to bring in an OC that he will let provide input or call plays. Might get Steele afterall.
