OBrien did a great job at pennst. Hes a proven HC. If he's not in everyone's top 3 if Pruitt is fired is crazy. Bama is looking at hiring him as an OC......meanwhile at UT we are talking about hiring Doug Marrone....Holy hell.
25-25 is a good run?
Did Marrone prove he can handle an NFL roster though? He appeared to have Buffalo trending in the right direction, and perhaps set them up for their current success under McDermott, but he bolted after just 2 years. His success in Jacksonville was a total flash in the pan. They instantly regressed after his first full season, culminating in an unmitigated disaster this year.I am just of the belief that the NFL is really big boy business. Aside from recruiting, if you can handle an NFL roster (winning seasons at Buffalo and Jacksonville) then you can scheme and handle a roster of young people. Sure, there are different demands with younger people. Buffalo is winning now, but that was the best season it had in a while, and he took a Jacksonville dumpster fire to an AFC Championship Game.
Aside from Hugh Freeze, we aren't hiring a coach with prior P5 experience. Not Campbell, and I don't even think Fickell would come. He makes 3.4 at Cincy and can wait on what he wants.
I feel like your missing a whole lot of middle in this post.....Did Marrone prove he can handle an NFL roster though? I suppose he does have an NFL track record of taking bad teams and quickly making them better/relevant, but in Buffalo he didn't stick around and in Jax the success didn't last beyond his first season. He was able to take a bad Syracuse program and turn them into an up-and-down program, which is something...I guess.
Our most realistic option at this point is Gus or Herman. Both have been reasonably successful at the P5 level and neither would have to be bought out. I'm quite confident our admin will not seriously consider either, but they are the most realistic options.
In 20 years we will be up to hiring a coach with a 65.2% winning percentage. In 40, I hope my great-grand kids will get to see Tennessee win a nation championship.Jeremy Pruitt head coach winning percentage: 45.1%
Derek Dooley head coach winning percentage: 43.8%
Doug Marrone head coach winning percentage: 38.7%
