Don't get me wrong, he can play, but I wasn't amazed by any means. He is certainly fast, I'll give him that, but as far as playing on an SEC level, I'm not sure if he could step right in.
If you watch this video, YouTube - Highlights of RB Jarvis Giles, #37 on Takkle/SI's Top 200, you'll see him hit the hole quickly and then simply outrun the (highschool) defense. He does make a few nice cuts, but fails to break any tackles or show any ability to be physical with the football. I see him as a possible third down back, but I haven't seen anything to prove he can be a feature back in the SEC.
As far as an athlete, he looks great. He could make an immediate impact on special teams in the return game, but again, in my opinion, I don't think you will see him dazzle anyone as a tailback against SEC defenses.

I agree. I always said I think Oku is the better back. Giles hits the hole quick and then outruns everyone. Looks like he has a pretty good offensive line as well. As far as cuts, feet quickness and strength, I think Oku has him beat hands down. Remember, Kiffin said he was looking for functional speed, not necessarily 40 time speed.
Big fish, small pond mentality.I can't see why any decent recruit would ever want to play for USC Jr.
Big fish, small pond mentality.
I'm sure he feels that he has a great chance to get significant playing time right away. At UT, he would have to really fight for it.
and shallow as it is, judging by his myspace account and some of the comments he has maid Giles seems to have an ENORMOUS ego. I'm sure he feels he can go to SC and rule the roost.
If Giles goes to SCAR I would imagine Drayton is gone for sure.
At Giles size he will not be an every down back at least his first year no matter what school he attends.
Maybe Drayton will be hired at SC to join him???? If he picks SC there has got to be more to the story. I just don't get why this kid has suddenly changed his mind. I don't really think Fulmer being let go is the main reason either. There must be something we don't know if SC is truly his front runner.
Big fish small pond, rule the roost, hawk in your avatar........... are you a wildlife conservationist?
oh I agree with you though, he sees like he would just love to have immediate playing time. At USCe he may just get that. If he came to UT he would more than likely have to hit the weights for a year or two in order to compete for time at tailback.
And bty I was not debating who was the better back (Oku vs. Giles). I was saying that there is no reason to compare the two if they are both good. If Giles has good acceleration then why is that bad? So what if they have different skill sets? Wouldn't you rather have both rather than just one or the other? Don't start justifying why we don't need him before he makes his decision.
What have you seen from our current RB crew that would make you believe that any of them has a starting job locked down?

Once again - putting words in my mouth. That a bad habit of yours? Did I once say that I didn't want Giles?
And I never said Giles has better acceleration - I'm no expert that is just what I saw was him hitting the hole quicker than Oku - which could very well be because Oku is more patient and follows his blockers. I have no idea which has better acceleration. Both have the same top end speed according to the recruiting services.
Playing time. That is the only deciding factor in this decision. He has a much better shot at USC than at UT.
