We’ve heard a few opposing opinions on LK. Larry said he was the fix and regretted leaving but zero chance they’d go back. Any truth to that?

SC was Kiffin's dream job, and it was an unlikely chain of circumstances that dropped that job in his lap. He was excited to go back to LA, Layla definitely wanted to go back to LA and neither of them regretted it. It was the way he left UT that really set people off, but that was a younger, brasher Kiffin. IDT Kiffin would be the choice this year... but he's been humbled. He speaks highly of UT-- but it's generally best to keep moving forward.

I’m not scared of anything. At some point the football program in Knoxville is going to have to start being professional. At some point they have to do things the right way.

If you can’t secure an actual proven grownup to be your head football coach, then the responsible thing to do is avoid a search that leaves you scrambling and ending up hiring someone you aren’t in love with.

THAT’S what has happened the last two times. The search was mismanaged and became public, the job started looking toxic, and we had to settle for unqualified guys that we ALL had to do mental gymnastics to talk ourselves into believing the hire was a good one.

I’m not scared of the media, but the odds of hiring a good coach diminish rapidly once negative momentum builds in a search.
So the solution is trotting out what we have and continue to lose, your point holds no basis..

But we don’t have one now. We got a guy that’s hiring coaches without interviewing them and then firing them in the middle of a game.

That's not true. Some people don't like Freeze, don't want to work with him and don't want him in the program.

And clauses aren't nearly the protection some think they are. There are the issues of proving something and choosing to enforce it, with proof, which most schools elect not to do. Butch Jones is the poster coach for that scenario.
What's the rub with freeze? Is it just his past transgressions? I'm not pushing any one candidate but I'm curious as to why he's looked at that way.

Don’t you understand we are already a dumpster fire? It can’t get anymore embarrassing then where we are currently...This mentality that we are just going to do worse or that I can’t handle the embarrassment of another coaching search doesn’t play when we are already there as a university. Accepting failure is worse than attempting to change it. The law of averages has to go in our favor someday when it comes to hiring a good HC but continuing to accept failure will get more failure.
So no let’s not do this again!

I’m not concerned with embarrassment. How I feel about myself is completely disconnected from the sports teams I follow. However, I am talking about the proper approach to actually making a good hire. We are all very experienced witnesses of what happens once a coaching search starts trending toward negative momentum.

You end up with an unqualified coach who wasn’t originally on your radar, that we are all left in VN doing our best to convince ourselves it was a good hire.

At some point, we have to do things the right way.

You know, if @Bassmaster_Vol could come up with a machine to combine the qualities of our past 4 coaches, we might get what we need.

Kiffin—Offense, recruiting (Social media presence)
Dooley—Press conference mojo (Great Hair)
Butch—Marketing (and coffee runs)
Pruitt— Defense and recruiting

Here’s looking to you Bass! This is your moment. Go get em tiger!

If they bring Pruitt back, I won’t watch or go to another game until he’s gone. This is ridiculous.

I stopped watching at the Arkansas game. Could see it coming and don’t want to see anymore. Never thought it could actually come to this as a fan. I didn’t think Pruitt would work out here but he’s been far worse than I ever imagined. Total joke.

We have gone everywhere but forward since then. Wish our University prioritized winning. Yet here we are.

You and I both believe they are fully gauging the market. And here's the thing: Pruitt knows it too. So, at some point, if you keep making these calls, you become more and more committed to making a change just out of optics.

If you call the top 5 guys and they turn you down, all of a sudden 6-8 don't seem so bad.

Well, the top 2-3 would be highly unlikely to say yes, if you are doing it right. Then, there are the ones (numbers 3-7) that are quality coaches - better than Pruitt. At least 2 of them, you feel you have a decent shot at getting. If you go past that group, then you might as well keep Pruitt at least one more year. No use starting over again. It's not worth the risk. Post-COVID, Pruitt's recruits may suddenly be ready for prime time next year.

Just about every team has one bad game in them per year, but overall, we should not be struggling with anyone except the big 3 (Alabama, Georgia, Florida) next year, if we keep Pruitt. 7-5 has to be the absolute floor for next year, and we need to go up from there.

I’m in the camp of bringing our boy home.

Why is it so hard for ppl to look up Ole Miss’s history and notice that they have only won 10 games 4 times in their history and understand that Freeze was one of those coaches and he did it during an era of Saban and others in the SEC west of all places..what mental gymnastics do our fans have to get over for them to understand that what he did at Ole Miss has hardly ever been done in their history??

I remember arguing with you about trying to be more optimistic this season after the Georgia game. And then he immediately followed that game up with the twin debacles at Kentucky and Arkansas and turned me right back into a jaded curmudgeon.

He stole my sunshine, Jack!
