Recruiting Forum Football Talk III

Totally fine with me.

None of this **** matters, man. We're all here giving opinions and posting what our cousin's cousin told us at the grocery store last Tuesday night. I don't need any insider status or e-cred, none of you know who I am and I don't know who any of you are.

We're all fans - and I like discussing the program and the coaching carousel both in Knoxville and around the country. I have no interest in recruiting anymore and the football team has been impossible to follow passionately for the better part of a decade. So this is fun to talk about - if the fun ends and Pruitt is retained to 2021, I'll probably head back over to the Grizzlies and Braves threads.
For someone who does not want e-cred, you sure do post a lot of stuff as factual, that, well, is not actually factual.

BM and JG's dad have sent tweets out basically telling fans to leave Jarrett alone. I can get taking up for your son and teammate but both of them need to ignore the noise and not respond on social media. It never ends good.

I love VolNation, Ebay, YouTube, and Amazon but I really hate the internet and social media. For it to be the best thing ever invented, it sure does cause a lot of problems.

I agree. But you understand why it's frustrating.

I would hate to see how some people on here would respond if everyone else criticized their job.

It’s just frustration. These are college kids who are working hard and getting criticized in public. I get that fans are frustrated, but imagine you being criticized at your job after putting in the time. Don’t think your response helps either.

It's called LIFE!! I put in hours at my job and still get criticized on how I could do certain things better but I don't throw a hussy fit about it.

Tn comes out looking bad no matter what happens against vandy - look like bullies if we win big.

Don’t care. It’ll be a win.

We’re an embarrassing 5-5 vs Vandy the last ten years. Play it. Win it. Back to back wins in the series and no one will remember the circumstances surrounding the game years from now.

That is what my SC alum booster friend told me over two weeks ago when I brought up names to him. Anybody giving a different story is blowing smoke.

Same. I posted this at the time but spoke to a guy here in Columbia who others claim to be connected to USCe. Couple weeks ago maybe?

Said Beamer HC. He also said Garrett Riley OC and Charlie Strong DC. Guess we’ll see.

I don’t necessarily agree. Getting a full scholarship and taking daily criticism aren’t mutually exclusive. One way to make it easy is to stay off social media, but these kids also use it for friends and family.

I made the point recently that coaches just aren’t in it for money as any human doesn’t want to be called a failure. These players are the same- it’s human nature to get upset when people are constantly questioning your hard work and responsibilities. Just as anyone on here would be upset if hundreds of people criticized you on a daily basis.

It’s a tough situation, but you can also argue that pushing back actually means the players care about their teammates.

Here's the thing, fans make the sport. You remove the fans and it's a 9-5 salary (like the WNBA). I don't mind players sticking up for their teammates, the problem though is it's the "viral" era. So the guy who is talking trash is an anonymous nobody that just got his 15 seconds because Maurer replied. Now Maurer essentially is worked up over what? That "fan" doesn't give 2 spits about the players it's why they took to social media to bash on JG.

You don't need social media for family, you can group text from your phone and share literally anything you want. The athletes are as bad as the fans wanting to use their platform to gain followers to feed their egos. But with that comes all the negativity you open yourself up for, the voices just seem louder when you give access via social media.

Nobody feels sorry for us getting bullied. Vandy fans rejoiced for 3 straight seasons.

It's a small land mass off the shore of Lake Loudon, accessible only by bagmen cloaked in black who're ferried there by houseboat in the darkness of night by a UT guy who operates a multi-million $$$ bag enterprise under cover of an aquatic transport company. Another UT guy stands on his dock and signals "all clear" by flashlight. It's amazing we've been able to keep it secret so long.
Did you say houseboat?

LOL. I am sure you do by hundreds of people online. It would be interesting to see some of our posters in their very shoes because your situation isn't the same.

I agree it's best to stay off social media, but I totally get the frustration.

If Fulmer is against a Freeze hire I hope he gives Bryan Harsin a call. He's making 1.75 mil/year at Boise State with a buyout of only $250k. I know it's his alma mater but $$ talks. Steve Caldwell was an assistant coach on Harsin's staff at Arkansas State in 2013.
Gotta admit I scoffed when you first posted this. Makes more and more sense. It’s prolly just butchna coaching search 17 desperation...but I don’t hate it.

dont forget the alumni and former player network they have available when they graduate and are looking for a great job and career.

Yep, I worked with a former VFL. Great dude too, he may even be on the forums who knows. I'm sure it helped him land the job he did, one of our higher ups was a VFL donor that actually hosted Kirkland Jr. during the off-season.

The smart players just focus on ball & taking advantage of what they are being given for the work they put in. And you absolutely as a player should think "who gives a f***" what the fans think or say, but don't broadcast that.

You put your stuff online and you’ll be surprised at the volume of reaction. That’s why I don’t.

Let's say hypothetically that losing to Vanderbilt would guarantee that we clean house (JP and his staff).

Why would I not want Vanderbilt to win the game? A meaningless loss in a season that's already a dumpster fire is not going to change much. Keeping CJP another year will have a massive impact on the program. I look at it like NFL teams tanking for a draft pick.

I'm genuinely interested to hear why people think us beating Vandy is a good thing, and have an issue with those who want Vandy to win.

Going into a coaching search unprepared usually means you end up with another miss. Right or wrong the decision and it's implications don't end with the action. You have to also evaluate the other variables. Right or wrong they've decided, up to this point in time anyway, that keeping Pruitt is the better option.

When the last search was over it was discussed widely that this program needed stability. I and many others were suspicious of Pruitt but we needed him to be the guy who brought stability if nothing else. Things have gone south, I'm not arguing pro or con by the way, just laying out the facts.

Simply put, we find ourselves between a rock and a hardplace..... Again. There are no easy answers, there are no, no brainier decisions. Every option has pitfalls.
