Pretty interesting article from ESPN on the lack of black head coaches in college football. You should read it, but the reason I bring it here is there are some applicable things about what it takes to be a head coach, and the hiring process.

It also explains what's happening with Pruitt.

Spot on and we all have seen it.

Like Jeremy's response "I'm hardheaded" to Phil on Vol Calls was telling. No shiz, Jeremy. I don't see anyway they can fix him before he is run out of town.

Changing assistants is just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Pruitt ain't gonna get it done. We've seen this play out twice in the past decade. Fulmer and the admins need to remove their heads from the sand and get a dose of reality. It's okay that Pruitt was a bad hire. It was an 11th hour decision. Fulmer gets a mulligan and it's not too late to land a solid coach for 2021 if he pulls the plug Monday morning.

Yep. We can either move this year and give the new guy a chance to compete as soon as next season. Or we can do what we always do: keep a guy 1 year too long, and force a 3-yr min. rebuild job on the next coach.

My money is on the latter.

And the roster will suck so much due to transfers and a terrible 2021 class, and there will be so much negative PR, that we will be forced to hire McGoogleMe because any coach worth a damn won't touch the job with a 10-foot pole.

So, most of what I know is from watching YouTube videos and being self taught, ive never played, but I will explain as well as I can. Anyone that knows more than me feel free to chime in and correct where im wrong.
On inside zone, the play is typically ran inside the box, usually the run goes into the open B gap, and begins with a C/G combo block on the play side DT. The guards job is then to climb to the second level and get to the linebackers and the Tackle is supposed to kick out the DE. This is a good way to get the HB going downhill and straight ahead, think second half of Auburn, we ran more inside zone.
For outside zone, the o lines first move is to take a lateral step in the direction of the play. The goal is to get the defense moving sideways and flowing to the sideline. The HB job is to aim outside the tackle, but look for a cut back lane to hit the hole and get up field. Think the pistol "power" run that Chaney likes to use a lot. So, the problem with this run, is it can be beat if the D lineman or linebacker can shoot inside the o lineman quick enough.

Oh, I gotcha. Wasn’t familiar with the terminology. I don’t know how you don’t run the ball with C/G combo blocks when you have Trey Smith and Cade Mays on your line...

That’s exactly right. All this talk of him not being fired no matter what is crowd control.
Next hire will never be mentioned until they trot them out on ESPN. every time a name was brought up during the last search, Vol Twitter burned them to the ground and got the entire AD office fired.

And Fulmer handles a lot of the Alumni and Booster efforts so Pruitt can focus on football. Yet we are still terrible.

I think true competitors are the exception, not the rule. Your rank and file players, which make up the vast majority of rosters, are there for the money. They compete insofar as it means they maintain a roster spot and continue to make money.

Guys like Brees, Brady, Peyton, etc. are rare exceptions. There's no reason for Brees or Brady to still be playing, or for Peyton to come back with a fused neck, other than they wanted to win more. They have all made hundreds of millions by that point.

Put yourself in Pruitt's shoes. He's already got tremendous financial security for himself and his family regardless of on-field performance. His contract (like all of these coaching contracts) is not heavily incentivized and if fired, he still gets 60% of whatever is left on it no matter what. Even if you are a competitive person, wouldn't such a setup affect your competitive spirit?

So is it your belief that only the truly elite players are doing everything they can to succeed? Bc you named 3 HOF’rs.

dude surely to goodness you understand the difference between calling a coach directly on vol
Calls and a post on a message board.

Dumb comparison dude

And yea bama Jeremey is a damn uneducated redneck but I wouldn’t be as so classless and calling into a show and saying that
Imagine thinking that calling and saying it to Pruitts face is worse than hiding behind a message board.

Your standards on what makes the same words classless is self serving and delusional. You are exactly what you claim to hate and lying to yourself about it is pretty damn sad.

We’ve done it twice now - our admins should know how it works, at this point.

Good find. CJP’s inability (or failure) to do the non football aspect of his role explains why Fulmer has taken so much of this responsibility. It is critical the next Vol HC have previous P5 HC experience. Personally I think Neal Brown should be in the top 5 candidate pool.

Agreed. Experience fit and regional fit. He makes a ton of sense.

By "administration" he means Randy Boyd.

$20M is NOTHING for that guy. I worked with him briefly in a previous job and he's able to regularly get access to $100M+ for different business ventures and moves. He knows everyone and can sell ice to eskimos.
Ice you say? Interesting....

So realistically, CJP can't even manage the football staff, if PF is handling the soft skill aspects of the job?

If that's indeed the case, then he's not going to grow fast enough in the role to have long term success at the head coach level. He's not a CEO type, so this will more than likely be his only HC role.

If PF was going to mentor a coach into the HC role, he should have picked someone with CEO type personality traits. Someone who sees the bigger picture, someone who knows how to delegate and still maintain accountability, etc.
