To be fair you only said "on staff". He is technically "on staff". Does he have an on field role? No and I see your point to that not being as hard of a hit as an on field coach being hired away. Does that also mean things look bad for Tennessee? No. Not yet. It will if on field guys start leaving for Tulane

I also didn't want chip long over Chaney as OC so I'm not bothered by his departure. Wish him the best.

Sure if any on field coaches take lateral or coaching jobs that are a step down that will look bad

Because the constant rotation of staff is gonna help literally all of our offensive woes. Stop speculating on a sport that you didn’t play, Cat. It’s in bad taste, my friend.

Terrible take, Gojira. Chaney is the highest paid OC in the country yet statistically has almost the worst offense in the country. Being positive is one thing, but being delusional is another.

I trust Chaney to be a solid OC if left alone.

I blame Pruitt for most of the issues with the play calling

I think stability with Chaney is more important than a change right now. Next year 7-8 wins is possible and I think Chaney IF ALLOWED to do his job is the man for the job.

He can’t scheme wins, dude. The talent has to execute it and we clearly don’t have that at QB. Cmon man!!

Is there any credible source or reason to believe Herman is or would consider an OC position here?
$$$$$. It would be too smart for this administration though. But If Pruitt is retained, imagine Pruitt DC and Herman OC. On paper, that’s a top notch duo.

How about just stating, "if you suck, you gone and we don't owe you ****."

I don't understand why we give coaches the power when they completely suck. I'd rather just see big incentives for doing like the bare minimum like go 6-6 win a bowl game. There is no motivation for Pruitt to even try and right the ship now, he knows he's canned and going to get paid big for it.

Dude this is just not how things work. Might there be a coach who is occasionally driven solely by money? Sure.

Yet even if Pruitt was, wouldn’t he try his hardest to keep this job and continue making the big money?

But back to my original point - competitors aren’t driven solely by money. You give the best players (pick any sport) more money than they could’ve ever imagined and they still work their azzes off every day.

Competitors want to win. Whether or not he rights the ship won’t be determined by effort. Bad/incorrect strategy or philosophy, sure. But not lack of motivation.

Which is why we had the run in the 90’s we had. It allowed Fulmer to take what Johnny had done to the next level.
So if someone comes in and takes what Pruitt has accomplished and takes it to the next level, we will start beating Vandy again?

Just messing. That's a good point.

Trey Smith, Josh Palmer, and Bryce Thompson if he declares

That’s all I can think of when I try and think who could get drafted from this team this year.

Definitely need to start putting more Vols in the NFL to help with recruiting. Plus, the only real reason I care about the NFL anymore is my fantasy teams and cheering on former Vols.

Sad thing about Palmer, is if he had a competent qb he would go in the top 3 rounds.

I just can't make myself believe Chaney has all of a sudden forgot how to be an OC. Something seems amiss.

Didn't a lot of folks say this exact same thing last year?

I disagree on many points. I think most coaches are driven by money more than they are competing.

I completely disagree on the players working their asses off also. Most professional athletes do not work very hard, at all. Of course you can point to some QBs that work hard but those position guys are not working their asses off every day. Leveon Bell being one of the worst comes to mind.

Pruitt has pretty much appeared uninterested since he got here, to me. I think that's why people call him dumb bc he just shows no emotion, fire, anything. Everything seems to be going over his head, or imo he's just apathetic about the job and has been since year 1.

I still think Chaney needs elite talent to win in the SEC and without it he is very pedestrian. If we want him to work out here he needs more to work with. That starts with a 5-star OL that actually plays like one and a QB that is at least competent enough to not score for the other team.

I think true competitors are the exception, not the rule. Your rank and file players, which make up the vast majority of rosters, are there for the money. They compete insofar as it means they maintain a roster spot and continue to make money.

Guys like Brees, Brady, Peyton, etc. are rare exceptions. There's no reason for Brees or Brady to still be playing, or for Peyton to come back with a fused neck, other than they wanted to win more. They have all made hundreds of millions by that point.

Put yourself in Pruitt's shoes. He's already got tremendous financial security for himself and his family regardless of on-field performance. His contract (like all of these coaching contracts) is not heavily incentivized and if fired, he still gets 60% of whatever is left on it no matter what. Even if you are a competitive person, wouldn't such a setup affect your competitive spirit?
