Recruiting Forum Football Talk III

I moved to Texas in 1995, from Tennessee, and I followed Texas football because they were the big dog in the state. From 2000 to 2009 they were great and they started their mediocre run after the 2009 season. Sound familiar Vol fans. Anyway, the best players in Texas would commit to Texas in their junior year of high school. They didn't even have to leave the state to recruit the best players every year. Since 2009 they've pretty much been just like Tennessee----trying to find their way back and the best players in Texas have plenty of options these days. They aren't jumping on the Texas bandwagon like they used to.

Maybe not, but it's also because they haven't put a great product on the field.

In 2009, Texas took Garrett Gilbert, who was a 5 star QB. But he didn't pan out for them. In 2010, they took 3 star Case McCoy (obvious connection) and Connor Wood, both who were not elite. In 2011, they took a 3 star David Ash, who was not good. In 2012, they took Connor Brewer, who transferred within a year or two. In 2013, they took Tyrone Swoopes, who only played significant time in his sophomore year. In 2014, they took Jerrod Heard, who eventually transitioned to WR. In 2015, they took 3 star Matthew Merrick. Just a disaster run of QB's.

In the meantime, between 2009 and 2015, while maybe not as highly rated, James Franklin, Johnny Manziel (although he had ties to A&M), Trevone Boykin, Trevor Knight, J.T. Barrett, Baker Mayfield, Patrick Mahomes, Kyler Murray, Jarrett Stidham all from Texas who went to other schools and had some success. They also apparently didn't try to solve the problem by looking outside the state. Additionally, it became cumulative with the rest of recruiting. Because QB play was poor and not developed, then Texas didn't get one recruit in the state's top 9 in 2015.

I think we all know what bad QB play can do to a program, and to me, it has all started there for Texas since 2009. If they had a dynamic QB, plenty of Texas players would be jumping on the bandwagon.

I think the point is that Robinson was pulled over and charged with very similar offenses - he was never kicked off the team and the charges were eventually completely dropped. It was "handled internally."

Bennett, meanwhile has already been kicked off the team, and everybody is just like "Welp, he's looking at several years in prison."

KB is just an enterprising young man. Free Little Biscuit!!

JG gonna transfer out, land on a team with a good QB coach and OC.....then light it up next season, win HT and go 1st in draft.........hehehe

for the past 15 years, best part of being a Vol fan is the plane tracking and airport podcasts.
I love the coaching searches . They're great and judging by the crap hires, its hard on the program and millionaires involved. At this point f*** em the deserve it

Yes lol! Great game. Wish they'd bring them back.

They probably would’ve mucked it up like they did Madden by now.

I still play NCAA 2014 occasionally and it’s gold. My kids get me to play Madden 21 with them from time to time and it’s horrible IMO. I used to love Madden too.

So true. Modern Madden games are so bad, feels extremely scripted.

Yeah, I have to take back what I said about the intern, ya'll set me straight--- totally forgot about the Hurd/Kamara thing, my bad...

Yeah I don't care for madden much anymore. Everything is about multi-player now and credits or some crap . I play fortnite with my 8 year old like a schmuck and get blasted. I do love eliminating those little building bastards every once and a while tho.

I was just going over Clemson's coaching staff to do some research on Elliott and Streeter (as either OC candidates or HC candidates) and found it pretty interesting that there are four Clemson alums on staff, and four Alabama alums on staff.

Basically, it's guys Dabo had worked with before at Bama and guys loyal to Clemson.
Yep. Every coach, good and bad, has staffs populated with buddies/guys they worked with previously/guys they know. A lot of people here blame Butch and Pruitt for doing that, but there isn't anything wrong with that per se. I mean, if I was building a team around me I'd call on people I knew too. I think most people would.

It's all in who you ultimately pick; just because a coach picks a "buddy" doesn't automatically mean it's a bad hire. Our coaches just happen to load their staffs with people who they know, but who are also bad coaches.

I think you also have to consider that these Texas staffs are just really bad at development. Take Garrett Gilbert for example; he was the highest-rated of any of those guys you mentioned. Total bust at Texas. Do you think he would have been a bust no matter where he committed? Is it just a coincidence/bad luck that Texas signs all these busts, while other schools get the good QBs?

It seems totally plausible that if Gilbert, Swoopes, or these other guys went other places they might have had more success, and if Manziel, Mayfield, etc. went to Texas they might not have been very good. If memory serves, Texas didn't even really recruit Manziel - it's just bad talent evaluation.

Yeah, the QB drought has been the biggest issue for Texas, they've missed on so many the last decade after Colt McCoy graduated. David Ash was the best of that lot, but he was a concussion magnet, and never reached his full potential. They also managed to screw up Garrett Gilbert, a 5 star who is still drawing a paycheck in the NFL. Ehlinger has been the best QB they've had since Colt, and he improved them, but deficiencies everywhere else have been their undoing recently. He reminds me a lot of Dobbs - his accuracy is spotty, he doesn't always see the field well, but the guy can make plays and is such a threat with his legs.
