Would you Sacrifice Basketball for Football?

It’s possible to be champs in football in basketball...at the same time even.

I’ve personally seen it happen.

If anything they feed off of one another. Good exposure is good exposure and helps with recruiting. I don’t recall which player it was, but years ago I can remember a highly touted basketball recruit committing to Ohio state. He mentioned that Ohio state was on his radar because he was an OSU football fan growing up.

Exactly.

One is not keeping the other down.
I wasn't implying that it was. I was merely bringing up the difference in the way most Fans feel now with a Bad Football/Good BBall team compared to the way we felt with a Good Football team/Bad Bball

I understand.
I'd "pick" football.
Just pointing out you don't nor should have to.

Yes. Especially because we never really sucked that bad before Bruce Pearl. Just weren't wildly successful like now. We were also so overshadowed by the women's team who was unbelievabley successful.

In the 60's had a deep tournament run and deep NIT run. NIT was a bigger deal then and only 32 teams made the dance then, so that's a big deal. Same for the 70's.

70's had 3 tournament appearances and one NIT.

80's 5 NCAA's and 3 NIT's.

90's 2 NCAA's and 3 NIT's.

00's before Bruce we had two NCAA's and two NIT's.

I mean. It wasn't great, but I think relatively speaking we were pretty good. It was up and down, but it was never straight up dead at any point and teams were going to the dance or the NIT every couple years or so. They were largely competitive and they seemed to always have the ability to build towards tournament berths. I think the perception of the program was muddled by football and the lady vols dominance. Men's basketball was always respectable before.

So I would take us being respectable, going to the dance every few years with some NIT's again if it meant competition for SEC and national titles in football hell yes.

As in, go back to sucking in Basketball in order to be great in Football again, what say ye?

EDIT:. I know we all want to be great in both at same time...
Nah, I'm all for letting them both play out every season. We hit a HR with Barnes, we also had a bunch of fans moan about the hire and when we upgraded his contract.

Hell, no.

Tennessee has a loaded roster and this season should be fun with an Elite Eight or possibly first Final Four appearance.

I got your basketball school right here :

0 Final Fours
0 SEC TITLES SINCE 1979

Some of you guys are hilarious. GTFO
0 SEC Tournament Championships since '79, at least, 3 (probably, one or 2, more)Regular Season SEC Championships, since then, not a lot, but we only have 4 in football, during that time, iIrc. Bet UT gets a Final 4 in the next 3 years and/or another SEC Regular Season and/or Tournament Championship. The football team won't be sniffing an East Championship in those same 3 years. But, to answer the question, No, I wouldn't sacrifice anything for our current and future success in basketball. The Golden Age of UT basketball began Grant Williams' sophomore year, last year was a hiccup, that now, didn't count. That next 5+ years are going to be monumental for Tennessee basketball

NO WAY! And another silly topic, football nor basketball are going nowhere. People that don't want nothing to do with football your free to be done, that still leaves many in the volunteer state and surrounding states to still pull for the Vols. We might not like what is going on now but we don't quit on our team in any sport. GBO!!!!

No. Rick Barnes and those players have worked hard to build Tennessee into one of the best basketball programs in the nation. They deserve what they have. The football coaches can do the same or go somewhere else so (hopefully) we can find someone else who can.

Hall of Fame caliber post.

I'm just confused on how some of you all see us as a "top basketball program" when we've made one sweet 16 with this coach and embarrassingly eliminated in the second round last year. Fans overturned a coaching hire for the football program, never had anything close with basketball.

Tennessee football would not have succeeded in the 90’s to the level it did without Pat Summit and the Lady Vols. Good basketball will enhance our football program which needs all of the help it can get!
Well the lady's got 2 natty's, 5 conference titles, 2 final fours, and 7 elite 8 appearances since the football team had its last 10 win season. Men's hoops has 2 conference titles in that span, heck even the softball team has 5 world series appearances with 2 runner-ups since football won 10 games. Sure it helps when other sports win but we play in the SEC. Football is king in the south always has been always will be. Ask bama what football can do for a school, they always suck in other sports. UConn has been destroying people for 2 plus decades but u still have to ask a friend if they even have a football team.
