New QB being Installed During Offweek

One flaw I see in your points. We have QB's on the roster that played last season, so development should have already taken place. Also, why is it other teams can start freshman QB's during this COVID year and have some level of success but not TN?

Harrison Bailey DID NOT PRACTICE in preseason due to COVID.

Tennessee football: Harrison Bailey has not practiced in preseason

After preseason, each week is spent installing team specific plans and strategies for week to week games.

So you have a choice each week - reteach the foundation and punt on a weekly game plan or try to add a few reps here and there and push the kids to catch up.

An offweek gives you a chance to reinstall foundations and rep them.

Why not Maurer? Maurer has been battling a hamstring this year and a victim of contact tracing. Hamstring didn’t heal until recently. Then you have to ask, do you get the flashes or Maurer we’ve seen or Kentucky Maurer?

JT Shrout...I suspect what we saw is how he practices. Sideways at best decision to replace.

Bailey is the show pony.

Offweeks are when changes are installed. Flame on

For those digital warriors out there who don’t understand the actual schedule and challenges Tennessee has had please read

1. Due to COVID, NO backup QB has been developed due to MANDATED quarantine from contact tracing. Blame Trump, Blame Biden, Blame China, Blame whoever. You can’t train a backup in 4 practices.

2. Our QB issue is about AWARENESS and the offense. Our mistakes are due to bad decision making. A QB questioning himself.

3. Chaneys offense DEPENDS on a QB who can AUDIBLE and make MULTIPLE reads. Maybe a young gun can do this, however, you need PRACTICE to have a playbook deeper than your wristband.

I GUARANTEE QB change happening for Arkansas UNLESS COVID/HEALTH issues.

BOOK IT

Flame away

What is the fine print on that GUARANTEE you speak of?

CFB is about talent. Saban and Dabo dont know more about football than other people, they just walk on the field with superior talent.

Pruiit hasnt really done a great job of recruiting and for that reason he walks on the field with average talent and gets his doors blown off.
Saban knows a lot more about football than other people.

Other coaches to be more specific.
I would still say he knows a good bit more than most of them, too.

He’s a really good coach. Outside of the kick-6 against Auburn, which I’m convinced was due to a TIA, I can’t recall any bonehead decisions from him.

He’s been successful everywhere he’s been, even when he didn’t have the talent advantage he has now. He’s one of the few guys willing to make pretty drastic changes to his philosophy, too.

He is a great CEO. He has wealth in terms of resources and talent and doesnt mismanage it.

When saddled with average talent, MSU, he performed like many guys with average talent. Same as NFL.

He walks into 80% of college games where a loss by his team would be unrealistic due to the talent discrepancy alone.

We could have played 5 games against Vandy and wouldn't likely be averaging 40 per game.
Last I checked we were averaging 20 ppg against SEC opponents for the last 2 years. I know Pruitt played for Stallings who thought a field goal should be enough - but times have changed.

He gave Michigan State their best season in history (to that point) while they were on probation.

Had the Drew Brees deal worked out differently, he probably retires at his leisure from the Dolphins.

He has a very good defensive mind. He’s not just a manager. He could be an elite DC if he ever wanted to step away from being the head man.

As far as the talent advantage, there have been other coaches to have a similar edge for a long period of time. Not many have stacked up the championships like he has.

All of that is understandable.

Your last point isn't from this perspective.
We called a game yesterday that a walk on scout team QB could have carried out. We ran it 14 more times than we threw and were behind by 2 scores or more 80% of the game. We either threw short quick stuff or went deep on designed plays. It didnt require a lot of playbook knowledge. If Maurer was ready to play late, he was ready to play early in that plan. And the same could be said for Bailey if he is going to be a legit option in 2 weeks.

We treated yesterday like a scrimmage then missed an opportunity to develop. If thats the goal.

I'm not sold they are moving away from JG. If they weren't will to start that process yesterday (after UK) with that gameplan there is little to indicate they are going to do it at all.

To add to that.
Bailey understood enough last week to get on the field late and get some reps.

Yesterday's game was over when Bamas bus got to the stadium before the announced KO time.

And Luke Fickel has Cincy riding high. And PJ is doing good things at MN. And some guy I dont know the name of has coastal carolina ranked. Happens every year. Plenty of good coaches doing good things.

He is a good D mind for sure. So is Pruitt. And we see what happens when there is limited talent to go with it.

Yes, Saban does know more about football or at least how to coach it better than most others. It's not hard to see that Bama's plays with more intelligence than most teams. That's coaching

Couldn't disagree more with your post

This team looks completely different in year three under Saban even if we have similar ranked recruiting classes. For one, very glaring difference, there is no way we are still relying on Guarantano with Saban at the helm.
Absolutely zero chance.

Fickle and a lot of these guys will get brought up to major programs in the next few years. They’ll have recruiting advantages. They won’t pack the trophy case like Saban.

Pruiit has effed up the qb situation very badly. No doubt about that.

They wont because they wont walk on the field and have the vastly more talented team 80-90% of the time.

The game moves a lot slower for guys when the guys on the other side of the ball are literally slower and weaker.

And a few years ago when that was the case for Florida, Saban took over a Bama team that had been irrelevant for a decade and had his guys within striking distance of the Gators in year 2. In year 3 he knocked them off to win the conference and the BCS and stayed on top of UF from then on.

And it’s not like Meyer isn’t a damn good coach. He wasn’t rolling people solely based on talent at Bowling Green and Utah.

Yes. He also understands the importance of strength and conditioning. A lot easier to overtake UT in year one when our higher ranked recruits are being trained by Johnny Long.

I don't disagree with having the better players, but we have adequate talent if they're coached up properly. Swinney went to his first playoff with roughly the same level ranked players as we have now. Of course since then, he's recruited through the roof. We have plenty of team speed. On defense, we don't wrap up and constantly take bad angles. That's poor coaching

Who was the qb on that Swinney team?

I agree on D. Very disappointed by the discipline of this D considering that is what Pruitt should be known for. 3 years in and guys routinely look confused about assignments pre-snap.

I agree but also u can’t discount the overwhelming stress on every unit having a inept QB brings. JG shows up when it’s too late or when he can beat cupcakes. He is the quintessential practice player.
He’s the guy at the Y that has the coolest wristbands and no jumpshot we’ve all played with a guy like that
The dearth of energy that is JG's QB play has a huge effect on everything. Pruitt didn't play a lot of guys late like he could have and the secondary struggled so much.

You can't underestimate the effect the JG situation has had on us. Its hard to believe with him under center. The performance against Kentucky sucked the life out of us. If JG doesn't throw two pick 6's and fumbles, we beat KY, we are fine mentally and we probably perform a lot better yesterday with more aggressive play calling.

And I pray we will have Maurer ready to start against Arkansas and Bailey waiting in the wings.

We saw Maurer give this team a huge kick in the butt last year with him making a splash against UGA after a bye week. We need that to happen again and keep JG at least second string. The guy looked loose out there. Had energy. Looked ready.
