247: Pruitt Contemplating Change at QB

As I said in another thread, we are like the dolphins. They were who they were with fitz, and knew where he could take them. They made a change for tua to see if he could get them to the next level. We need to make a change. We know where JG can get us. We need to make a change.
Excellent comparison.

Maurer made a lot of mistakes last season, but it always felt like the offense just "worked better" with him in the game. He'll improve quickly. IMO, he's going to be a very good college QB; just of matter of when.
Both BM and JTS didn't know the offense very well last year. I assume BM knows the offense much better now and he is a true DT qb. I don't know but I still have a feeling HB starts on Saturday.

Do you think Mauer’s apparent lack of health was a factor in that decision?
Maybe. I don't truly know. It wasn't a factor before the '19 season. I think this all goes back to a strategic decision Pruitt made to invest in JG in January '19. That was a turning point. I don't even fault Pruitt for going with a talented, experienced guy without knowing his limitations. I fault him for being so hard headed that he stuck with him after the VU and IU games.

You might want to choose a different game there Jeremy, breaking in one of the younguns against Bama
Mickie has a heart... he'll just be playing is 4-stars, roll up 60 points and then play his scrubs. Final 72-0

I don't care who they trot out there as long as it isn't JG. I literally just want something different to chew on. Give me a reason to actually enjoy watching this blowout. All I literally ask from the coaches at this point is to give us the slightest indication they care about the program, because JG playing the rest of the season tells me the opposite.

I think we all know it is time. Honestly, what Pruitt is doing to JG is tough to watch. I know that JG has experience, but his game film shows us an inconsistent QB and one that will make really dumb mistakes. JG is an outstanding young man, and Vol fans should appreciate what he has been willing to go through for us. That being said, to continue to run JG out on the field in front of a fan base that is ready to move on puts him in a place to be overly criticized everywhere you turn. Right or wrong, college fan bases will bash a player's performance at this level. Pruitt should think about that. Some other toughts:
1) You go with the experienced QB over a young one because you think they will manage the game and protect the ball. JG is making mistakes. If He is going to make these mistakes, you might as well let a young QB make them...it will be at least a little more palatable.
2) The 1994 TN/AL game is on TV right now and it was the Manning/Stewart game where they were taking over the reigns. At one point the announcer said "starting these two freshman now may be a blessing in disguise for Phillip Fulmer...now he can see what these two freshman can do and can develop who will be his quarterback next year." Not exact phrasing because I don't remember.
3)The argument about putting one of these young QB's out against Alabama could hurt their psyche. IMO If taking a beating vs. Alabama ruins a kid, there probably wasn't much that was going to happen with that kid anyway. I see BM and HB as two guys with a strong enough ego to bounce back. Also going back to this 1994 Alabama game we went into the half with Peyton Manning 2/5 for 22 yds and 2 Int's. I think he bounced back and did alright.

I don't know. We are improving overall. UK was simply a bad game. Bad games happen to every coach and every team.

I simply don't understand his knack for not preparing his team better.
That has been the case in several games over 2 years and 4 games. Even in some games we won we didn't wake up until the half.

If Pruitt is planning to play someone other than JG on Saturday, then it does him no benefit to say that right now. I expect to see JG out there, potentially as the starter, but I also expect to see at least one more guy get a shot...possibly two. It will be interesting to watch.

Yes, we should be so afraid of the #62 defense in the country out of 77 teams. If you don't watch football and keep up then why even give an opinion? Just lurk or ask questions from those who are paying attention.

In hindsight, it would have been a good idea to rep other QBs with the first-team offense before Oct 20th. Additionally, it might also be a good idea to know what plays each QB can execute competently so if they have to come in at a moment's notice, they aren't thrown to the wolves.

It looks like the same old lack of preparation by Pruitt. We saw it in year 1. We saw it in year 2. We are seeing it in year 3. Do better, CJP.

Elephants don't change their ears.

What if Arkansas’ defense is rated too high by game time?

He stopped "learning on the job" towards the end of year 1.
You never stop learning and evolving as a coach. The problem with Pruitt is that he doesn't seem to have grasped some of the little things that might separate someone who is a head coach and someone at the coordinator level. Some guys just aren't cut out to be the head guy.....maybe his first gig as a HC should have been at a MAC or Conference USA school

I said early on doing a major rebuild at a SEC school like UT with a first time HC was going to be a uphill battle.

Several QBs Get Reps in Practice

This is interesting. Tough to know how much to read into a 247 article, but it almost sounds like the coaches want to try out Maurer again. The key phrase being "who will be healthy enough". That really can only refer to Maurer, as JG, Shrout, and Bailey are not injured. Could be reading too much into it, but would not surprise me; he would've likely been QB2 behind JG if not for injuries. In any case, sounds like whether or not JG starts, we'll see at least 1 other QB out there; just a question of who that will be.

If Maurer played with his head on his shoulders rather than thinking he is invincible this argument would not be needed
In the same instance if Shrout got more live snaps he can get it done for Tennessee
Bailey while he was highly sought after in HS he just isnt read and none of the coaches are going to feed him to the wolves on a silver platter
