True forgot the 30’s. Both of Neyland’s tenures is when I think of Tennessee dominance.

I was at the 85 Sugar Bowl. It was... glorious.

We were undefeated in the regular season in 1938, 39, and 40. We lost 2 of the 3 bowl games, and wound up 31-2, and gave up 16 points in 1938, 14 points in 39, and 45 points in 1940 ( 33 games total). almost half of those were in the 2 bowl game losses to #3 Southern Cal and #5 Boston College. We gave up an average of 1.4 points per game during the regular season in those 3 years and 2.3 when you include the bowl games after each season. This was the era of Foxx, Molinski, Cafego, Coffman, etc.

We played a complete half. We couldnt even do that our previous 3 years.

Gotta have a real QB and more depth on defense. If we keep JG, we're gonna need a lot more depth on defense. I was afraid the second half would go the way it did; JG is wearing out our defense, and doesn't even need Butch's help.

Late 30's, early 50's , late 60's/early 70's, and then the 90's. We started tailing off after 2000ish. Plus, a few bright spots here and there, such as the 85 Sugar Bowl.

I'm not so sure.

Recruiting has improved. QB and OL play are suspect against equal or better talent. Defense continues to improve.

Still not enough on defense the way JG keeps them on the field. The worst part is we just had a great recruiting year, and it's still going to take another year at least to pay dividends.

Unfortunately, 72 was the only one in here at the games and able to enjoy those years. The rest of us had not been born yet.

I actually did see us play against Bear Bryant's Texas A&M team in the 1957 Gator Bowl at Jacksonville. We won 3-0. We went from there down to Miami to watch Bud Wilkinson's powerhouse Oklahoma team beat Duke on Jan.1, 1958 in the Orange Bowl. Duke was a big time team in those days.

In 1939, they did not give up a point in 10 regular season games. Amazing.

After 3 recruiting classes there should be this much separation in talent.

Quite a bit of difference in our past recruiting classes and GA's, and it showed in the second half defense. The difference is narrowing, but those guys have to develop to show up on the field. Games like this are like the slow motion train wreck - you know it's going to happen probably starting in the third quarter, and it seems to last forever.

Our 1s did well enough against their 1s until worn out. OL was a huge liability against their DL which may be coaching.

It's that old thing though. A one dimensional offense means the opposing defense has an easier time looking good.

Oh yeah. Just like what we'd do too. Bama is just that team that beats up pretty much every team in the country.
Even when we do play close in competition w/them some how we find a way to choke at the very last minute.

They don’t but that’s an interesting spot to bring up. My old stomping grounds. Corryton kids went to Gibbs or Horace Maynard (my alma mater)/Union Co High School.

I’m not sure.
I’d like to see us further along but I’m not sure how realistic that is. There was once a time when players like Henrey T would be in the rotation but not start till his jr year. He’s the signal caller on D as a true sophomore.
I see the best Tennessee team I’ve seen in 10 ish years.
I see reasons to believe that the next year will be better than this year. And I’m not sure it will be a championship run year either.
The thing I do know for sure is JP isn’t getting fired anytime soon.

I'm thinking the year after next. The incoming class was good, but covid completely screwed development this year. Next year they'll be better than incoming freshmen but far less than returning sophomores. A ten game SEC only season is a kick in the teeth for teams coming back from the depths. Tossing new kids in the pool in this conference is like tossing them into a shark infested pool under the old sink or swim philosophy - only they better be able to walk on the water.

I rented a house at Blaine in about 1979, and I think that I got some utility bill from the Luttrell Blaine Corryton Utility District. That is about all I know about Corryton.

Lol nice. When you were there when I was a freshman at Horace Maynard High School. The old high school is now the middle school and was replaced by Union County High School i believe in the late 90’s. Small world.
