Last night I watched the Alabama-Missouri game given the accolades Missouri has gotten for “beating Alabama in the 2nd half” of their game. So Jones and Harris leave the game when the score is 35-3 and Young and Sanders come in. They also start rotating in some young guys on defense because according to Saban in the post-game presser he needs to build some depth. Young and Sanders couldn’t move the ball at all. There’s a huge drop off from Jones to Young and from Harris to Sanders.
With about 9 minutes to go in the game Young is sacked and fumbles the ball to Missouri. At about 8:30 to go in the 4th quarter one of Alabama’s freshmen DBs blows a coverage and Badie gets free for a long touchdown pass. The other score by Missouri in the second half was as time was expiring on the clock. Literally. They didn’t even have the point after attempt.
I thought Jones, Harris, Waddle, and Smith looked good for Alabama and obviously they have a good offensive line. I didn’t think their defense looked sharp at all, at least not what I would expect from a Saban defense. They did keep sustained pressure on Robinson but I didn’t think they tackled very well. It looked sloppy. Before the TD pass to Badie midway through the 4th quarter Missouri had 183 yards of offense. They ended up with 322. Obviously Moses looks good and looks to be fully recovered from his injury last year. He runs the Tide defense.
I didn’t think Robinson looked bad but as noted he was under pressure pretty much all the time. He made some plays but obviously not that many. The other QB was in for the 2nd TD and in fact ran it in for the TD as time was expiring. This wasn’t your everyday Alabama goal line stand. I agree that Missouri played hard and didn’t quit. I think Nick Bolton best described their offense, “It’s weird”.
Robinson won a state championship in Texas his senior year in high school and started 7 games for TCU before he got injured and eventually transferred to Missouri.
One of the things I thought I was seeing in our game last week was I didn’t think we were doing a good job of maintaining containment on the edges. I could be wrong and of course South Carolina didn’t do much to exploit that even if I am right. I think Missouri could though but since Missouri showed some option elements in their offense against Alabama I’m guessing our staff will be prepared for that. jmo.

This is a comparison of Guarantano, Robinson, and Hill based on the week 1 performance and the depth of their passes:
