Year 4 ... Same Old JG

Most of JGs errant throws were not behind the receiver, they were way over their head. Had they been down they were probably catchable. Most of the bad ones even our 7 foot center would not have been able to catch.

I haven't read this whole thread, so apologies if the horse I'm beating died on page 3. This could be a whole different scenario given a full spring practice, a normal fall camp and a normal season. Crazy to think we would have played Oklahoma 2 weeks ago, and at this moment would be talking about the Florida game that happened yesterday. Bottom Line- JG was the only option yesterday. There may be some good talent in the wings, but he did a few things that would have been hard for a freshman to do. An example - that flea flicker where our receivers were covered and he found a safety valve to Gray for big yardage. That was nice.

Hopefully the Missouri game will be relaxed enough to get a backup some reps. Right now, I don't see it - looks like we have enough weaknesses that every game will be tough. So given that, we might have to accept JG is gonna JG the rest of the season.

Did anyone else think that some of his handoffs were extremely slow in getting the ball to the running back? I'm not sure what thats about. Maybe letting the hole open up a little first?

Tennessee offensive football is SO HARD to watch with JG at QB. Every time Tennessee gets the ball I feel virtually hopeless. Tennessee has very good players at most every position on offense yet we struggle game after game to score or even sustain a drive over 10-20 yards. JG will NEVER lead this Tennessee team to the top echelon of the SEC East even if he had 5 star players at every position.

To my point, with less than 2 minutes to go in the first half Tennessee gets the ball at the SC 44 yard line and I know from watching the past 3 years of JG ball that Tennessee will fail to score. Sure enough, 1st down ... JG throws behind a wide open back on a 8 YARD pass, INCOMPLETE. 2nd down ... Gray runs for 4 yards. 3rd down ... JG drops back to pass, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 seconds go by as JG stares down a covered receiver and then gets tackled for a loss. 4th down ... Tennessee punts AGAIN!

Gawd ... how much longer are we going have to watch this same scenario play out? Like everything else this year ... it's a LOST YEAR so why on earth don't we play Harrison and let him get some valuable experience and learn about SEC game speed. The best we can hope for with JG is 5-5 or 6-4 at best. If we don't replace JG this year we will be looking at 5th FRICKEN YEAR with JG at QB. GEEZ !!!
Game 1 and per coach Pruitt. WR haven’t been available so not all on JG. 19-31 259yds & 1TD. Missed high most of the night. Will be much improved by next Saturday.

His middle of the field throws are still behind the receiver, he lead none of them last night and they are basically forced to stop and catch his pass as he doesn't throw until they are at the end of their routes.

It's the same thing he's been doing his entire time here at UT.

Looked good running the ball on that last TD drive, but his accuracy has definitely left a lot to be desired so far.

The Big Question is when Tenn got the ball off the turnover near midfield, with 7 minutes to play, Why the hell did they not run it? Football 101 says run the football, burn the clock and use that Superior OLine to seal the win. Chaney always outsmarts himself; instead of the other DC. One word. MIKE LEACH.

JG was too juiced up.. strong arm and just overthrowing causing the high ball on numerous occasions. IMO he looked much more comfortable presnap and knowing the offense and routes his WR’s were running. The progress he has made will be more obvious if he gets the accuracy under control. Again, will he be able to do that is to be determined

Every time I want to say something bad about JG this year my slogan is "He is Kind, He is Smart, He is Important." I'm just glad there's not a 6th year senior or is there?

Guys we won the game! It was the first game of the season and on the road! I thought JG played well enough and I’m honestly ashamed at how many people are complaining about him! The kid gets knocked out almost every game and is tough and gives his all. Did he make a few mistakes? Yeah but didn’t everyone? It was their first game of the year and I’m just happy football is back and I’m happy to cheer on the Vols every week even if they do give me a heart attack!! Lol!!!

This year doesn't count against eligibility. So he can come back next year and play, and probably will based on how it goes around here.

How many points would we have scored? Atleast 49?

Honestly 49 was on the table with a decent QB.

He missed a wide open receiver that was a TD in the second quarter I believe and so many drives ended due to his 12 ft high passes.

We are so close to being a legitimate team again though and I think we all see it.

Next year will be fun.

I do hope you're correct and JG improves next week but the crux of my post is that we've watched JG perform this exact same way for 3 full years now. Yes, he on rare occasions has a great game but the vast majority of the time he performs just like he did last night ... overthrows receivers, stares down receivers, doesn't get the ball off quickly and takes far too many sacks. "He is what he is" and he isn't going to get any better. He's had ample opportunity to improve ... he can't.

It's like another poster stated, Jarret's quarterbacking is like his golf game. He said he could practice golf and play golf every day all day long and he knows that his game would not improve significantly. That's exactly where we are at with JG, he has plateaued and won't ever significantly improve IMO. Sadly, it is what it is.

I have been a JG naysayer. I still don't think he is the QB he should be. I don't hate the guy, he just isn't getting it done.

HOWEVER, I saw this last night that is different from last year.
1) Poise, never seemed to panic last night.
2) His feet were moving. Didn't stand flatfooted and take hits. Kept his feet moving and scrambled effectively.
3) At times showed good accuracy and hit open spots vs. hitting where the receiver was.
4) Seems to have more confidence in the game plan vs. being lost most of the time.
5) Game seems to finally have slowed some for him and he seemed surprised when receivers were open when they were supposed to be. I think this is part of his airmailing the ball.

He still doesn't show the skills of a 5 year QB, I would rate him as late sophomore at best. I think there are issues that can be fixed which will help him improve more each week.

Then again, I am still waiting for JG Versions 1 - 4 to show back up. If he can play like he did last night and continue to improve over 3 - 4 games, then I will believe. Haven't seen it yet.

He was 4th in the league this week QB rating
