Chris Low: Update on coaching search

Other than the Sooners, who has he faced that had superior talent?

This is a very fair question. I just looked and he beat #12 Oregon at Oregon on Sept. 20. His only losses have been to Washington 24-10. Hawaii at Hawaii when they were ranked #13. He lost by 12. He was beaten by E.Carolina by 3 points a month later in the bowl game.

So his resume' looks like this.

Good teams beaten:
Oregon
Oklahoma

Good teams lost to:
Hawaii by 12

Fair to bad teams lost to:

Washington by 14
East Carolina by 3

Won all other games.

That's not too shabby to me. Sure, he's not playing SEC week in and week out but give the guy his props. He's lost 3 games in three years and is undefeated this year.

Nobody knows if that can translate into wins in the SEC but, again, it's a stellar resume in my opinion.

All you can ask a guy is to win the games that he's given. He's won 92% of his games the last three years. Nobody is better. Nobody.

June Jones won 90% of his games last year and beat the hell out of Chris Petersen's team to win the conference. He's worked out marvelously. He's 1-10 right now with a team that was 1-11 last season. Great improvement, June. Coincidentally, Jones' last game at Hawaii was against UGA, who completely destroyed the Rainbow Warriors in exactly the same way they defeated Boise State just a couple of years prior.

I think he could possibly have some success as a mid-level Pac-10 coach. I just don't think he would do much at all for Tennessee.

His record speaks for itself. He gets railed for using the behind the back play yet he beat Oklahoma. I'd be tickled to death if Tennessee had been in the position to use the statue of liberty and beaten Alabama with it. I'd still be singing Rocky Top!

So get out of here with this, "he won off of a trick play" crap. If trick plays would have caused us to be 9-0 this year....bring in David Copperfield to coach these mugs...I don't care.

June Jones and Hawaii beat Alabama. I suppose we need that lying sack of garbage coaching on Rocky Top.

You do realize that all this campaigning for Petersen is for naught, right

Stating my case. Stating my case.

Do I think they hire Peterson? No.

Would I rather have Kiffin. I suppose so.

The truth of the matter is this. Nobody knows what any coach is going to do. The truth of the matter is that "maybe" if Fulmer and Clawson's new offense had one more year to sink in they would go 10-2 next year and win a BCS bowl. The year after they win a National Championship. Anybody who thinks that could NOT have happened is clueless. What are the odds? Who knows and we'll never know.

Bring in Gruden and he may tank. Look at Rodriguez to Michigan. There's not assurances in this game.

Any coach we hire is a crap shoot and one never knows what will or can happen. Kiffin might come in and rock and roll. He may come in and in 3 years we'll all be on here saying, "oh my gosh what were we thinking."

Peterson could come in here and win a National Championship and you chumps that oppose him would have egg on your face. He may blow it then I'd have egg on my face. Fair enough.

You can know, however, that I'm basically just kickin' back wastin a little time on a chat board. I don't put a lot of stock in this stuff but it's fun to banter around with and go back and forth with guys. I enjoy watching my State teams win ball games. Always have. I like seeing Tennessee, Vanderbilt, MTSU, TSU, and any other team in this fine state win. I love college football.

It's a great game and part of the fun is getting on here and chewing the fat with all of you turkeys.

So whoever the coach is....I hope he does well so that we can all see 'em singing Rocky Top in a National Championship game right after having kicked the crap out of Alabama in the SEC Championship game.

Go Vols and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

If I fought Lennox Lewis I could win. Anybody who thinks that could NOT happen is clueless.

Why this thing has been so secretive:
1. Respect for Phil Fulmer
2. We tried/are still trying unsuccessfully to get Butch Davis

Why we will get Kiffin:
1. Butchy isn't interested.
2. Kelly is not a big splash that the fan base would be happy with. Hell, none of our fans without electricity know who this guy is.
3. If Kelly were hired and turned out to be a bust, then MH would be up shat creek without a paddle.. MH won't hire anything short of a safe hire.

When it will happen:
1. After Phil Fulmer day 11/29.
2. As early as possible to give him time to heal the recruiting wounds, and recruit some himself.
3. Monday 12/1 Press Conference!!!!

So there you go: Enjoy Thanksgiving knowing that in less than a week Lane Kiffin will be announced our new coach!

If we don't hear something 12/1, then expect the unexpected (Butchy or Chucky pulls a Saban), but I think this is highly unlikely and Lane is our boy!

you do talk some crap! how in the hell is a guy who wins everywhere he goes with less than stellar talent and 5th string QB's not a safe hire? but a guy who was an OC for one year and a HC for one year is? stop talking out of your ass!!

You guys kill me.

Give me a percentage.

Here's the question.
What "percentage" of a chance do you believe Fulmer would have had next year in winning:

10 games
9 games
8 games
7 games
6 games
5 games
4 games

I'm going to give you my answer just for fun:

10 games ( 10% chance he'd win 10 )
9 games ( 20% chance he'd win 9 )
8 games ( 30% chance he'd win 8 )
7 games ( 70% chance he'd win 7 )
6 games ( 50% )
5 games ( 30% )
4 games ( 20% )

I'm sure some mathematician can get on here and eat my lunch because of the problems with the math but I don't care...in my mind that's the perception I have. If someone said, "Ken give me a percentage of Fulmer winning 10 games next year." I'd say, "I'd give him probably a 10% chance of doing that based on what I've seen lately."

Yet that's a very real chance. 10% is low, sure, but, hey, it's more than most will probably give him.

I would truly think they'd probably win 7 games next year as follows.

watch the language yo..

Not sure if this has been posted yet, i'm sure it has since it's a few days old, but instead of starting a new thread i figured i would throw it in here.

ESPN - Vols lose another key running back prospect - SEC

Yeah...this is over in the recruiting forum and has been discussed there ad nauseum...

Turns out this isn't true...Oku hasn't decommitted...he just made some comments about not wanting to play in a spread offense and somebody took that and ran with it as "Oku decommits from UT"...as if they were certain that we're hiring a coach that runs the spread

Kinda makes you wonder though if he got some info on the search after those initial comments

I see the logic in what you're saying but I'm personnally too tired of all the speculation to let my mind wander to that...

I've decided to take a wait-and-see approach...getting fired up about the lastest rumor and reading too much into every minute detail that pops up has become too cumbersome for me

I want to start by saying this is my first post on this site after coming to it over the last year or so. My work computer wouldnt let me post but now I can! And just because it is someone's first post on this site doesnt mean they're not well versed in UT message board bantor (sp?) btw.

I would like to make a few points that have been bothering me after reading some of your points and have thus motivated me to actually bust my cherry on here:

I also want to preface by saying outside of Chucky (extreme longshot, granted) I dont have a favorite among the possibilities being thrown around.

1) Anyone who thinks Kiffen is the safer hire than Kelly is not thinking logically on that matter. Kelly is a proven winner as a head coach at three different levels of college football spanning many years. Kiffen is a legendary NFL defense coordinator's son who was CO-defensive coordinator for one season at USC and an excellent recruiter there as well (who cant be there? is a fair question though) So how in the world is Kiffen the safer choice? Because he was successful at USC for a couple years as an assistant? Or because he "ran good practices at Oakland"?

2) The University of TN does NOT need to hire one candidate over another because he would be able to start "mending recruiting" one month earlier than another. While i understand the importance in that month to that one class, you do not make this important a decision based on that at all! Would you guys rather have the worst recruiting class in the country for one year and bring in Nick Saban or have the best recruiting class in the country for one year and bring in Mike Shula? So please quit saying that.

3) Why does no one want Leach because he is just a little quircky?

4) Butch Davis is overrated and older than you think.

With all that said, I still like Lane Kiffen. I think he would do a good job here. Not being a hippocrite, just was playing devils advocate in why he is not the "safer choice". The only thing Hamilton needs to consider, in my opinion, is - will our new coach have it in him to line up against Meyer and Saban in a couple years and be their equal?

And to Fulmer, you were the greatest thing that ever happened to UT football but your time has past. Its time for a new era no matter who that is, I believe Hammy will make the right choice.

Thanks for letting me vent, Vol Nation.

Nice.....His name however is KIFFIN not KIFFEN and he was the OFFENSIVE Coordinator at USC , Not the defensive coordinator

Hiring Kiffin, for this job, would be asinine and incompetent on Hamilton's part, and if that happens and anything less than a complete turnaround happens in two years I hope H. gets run out of town on a rail. Kiffin would be a great hire for a smaller school, or even perhaps for Washington...but not for a program that is one of the handful of the most desirable HC jobs in college football (and anyone who tells you otherwise is probably either high or an agent with a pocketbook agenda). The wheels have come off and we can't afford to take a chance on someone unproven. And it's just mind-bogglingly stupid to pine for someone because he might be a good recruiter (I could recruit at USC), when we've had top-ten classes almost every year CPF has been here. We need someone who can COACH, someone who actually develops players and builds a TEAM, something we haven't had in about seven years now. If your head isn't six feet deep in pond mud, you can see that there's not a better coach out there, that is a possibility, than Kelly. Would Meyer or Saban have done better in two years at Cincinnati, with the talent that's there, than Kelly has? Would anyone? Think what he could do with the talent we have right now. He'd be like a kid in a candy store.

It would really be foolish and irresponsible, and an injustice to the fanbasel, for H to hire Kiffin, at this juncture. He is unproven, completely, and it would be a gamble. Kelly is not a gamble. I really, really encourage any Vol fan out there with a voice, and a little common sense, to loudly protest the idea of Kiffin, and demand it not happen. It just doesn't make sense, and could very well be our ticket to the years of coaching wheel that Bama had before finally landing Saban.

Here's my question... how much do you think UT could afford to pay a coach per year? Then my next question is how much is to much for a coach... no matter who it is.?
