SEC still planning on playing season.

I honestly think the athletes at large P5 schools are less likely to spread the virus if they are in their season routine * rigid curfews/testing/isolation protocols in place. Smaller schools can’t afford to do this but big schools can. Difficult for me to understand Big10 logic where they allow students back on campus/dorms/etc. but don’t allow athletic competition.

I think at least one person will die directly involved from the staff/athletes. Probably many more.

The additional community spread will be much more dangerous though.
So you’re against kids being in school then also?

So if I had kids yes.

Now I do understand that we don't have a good childcare system set up in the US and some parents can't afford to quit their jobs.

So I am a bit more flexible on where I stand.

My belief is that it should be optional and that way we have less on ground students so social distancing can be better implemented.

A field where you are making constant physical contact! Are you doing that in a grocery or restaurant? I'm not.

There is a clear difference there. If we can't agree on that, then I'm not sure we can advance in this discussion.

And I'm in my mid 20s. Most of my friends are only seeing family and the closest of friends. We dont need to expand that further since the virus works on an exponential scale of spread.
Okay I'm in my mid 20"s and its mostly the same deal, only me and my friends have partied and we have gone out to bars. If you follow any player on social media or many other young people have done the same. Large groups all over.

So you are only seeing your closest friends and family and "most" of them are doing the same. How many close friends and family members is that? And if not everyone of your friends and family members are only seeing close friends and family, then they must be partying and or at the very least seeing more than just their closest friends and family. Does that not make you inextricably linked to several people that you dont even know? How many family members do you have that have friends that "dont take the virus seriously"?

So are you saying the 200K to 500K people who have died as a direct or indirect result of the flu should have resulted in shutting our society down already?
unds

We understand (generally) the long term implications of the flu.

And the flu is something we deal with every year. A new virus which we don't fully understand killing tens of thousands of people? Absolutely warrants a shutdown.

I have two main friend groups lol and I keep very close tabs on what they do. There are other friends who I know are more socially outgoing and won't contain themselves that I will not associate with during this time.

All of my family takes it seriously, took a while for some to come around and during that time I limited my contact with them as much as possible.

And again yes there is a risk even then, but the key is we LIMIT it. Not do a cfb season that puts you into at minimum contact with 10-20 people per game.

But the point is they will practically only be in contact with the same people, who will be monitored rigorously and tested several times a week.

If they do not have that, they will socially distance less back home.
Trevor Lawrence and others have said as much.
Obviously they really want to play so I am sure they will try extra hard to limit contact with people outside the team.

Thats why when poeple returned to campus so many tested positive. Because they were hanging out with a lot of people! Just saw a college basketball player post a video on instagram of him at a wedding with like 60 people and nobody had masks on.

This sorta. I believe the SEC needs one of the other power 5 confernces to play as well. I think the ACC can be convinced to play along the SEC

Then give us 2 games with the ACC - NC State and Syracuse would work, and we'll pass on Auburn and Texas A&M..:)

To start off I studied Public Health for 6 years and have my Masters in it. But let's forget about that because this is common sense.

We have 163k deaths and many active cases in this country.

Now common sense dictates, more contact=more cases. More cases=more deaths.

Even if you consider that these are younger adults, they have parents and grandparents who raise them and they constantly interact with. Not to mention fans.

Testing while it definitely helps isnt 100% accurate, therefore even if they test negative...They could still very well be spreading it.

Ok Mr./Miss Masters in public health, answer me this. Are the student athletes in a regulated active football program more or less susceptible to contracting or spreading the disease as opposed to them just being students and not regulated, controlled and tested as much?

So now you know more than everyone else or think you do just because you went to school for so long! Answer me this then if you are so smart. How many deaths among the current number reported are kids between the age of 18-24. I would be willing to bet you it is less than .05% of all current deaths from the virus!!!!

Never said I knew more or was more smart. What that education did give me was the qualifications to speak on certain matters pertaining to Public Health.

I have always said the death rate for young people is low. The danger is the spread (which eventually will get to older people) and the long term implications which we dont know but largely suspect could include lung damage, loss or reduced senses.

Create a bubble by mandating players in PWR 5 get pre approval to venture beyond those multimillion dollar football athletic facilities for 10 weeks. Requests to leave for reasonable requests won't be denied.

Offer monetary rewards for agreeing to these measures. This stipend doesnt have to be grossly large, but I dont see how you force amateur athletes in a bubble without it..

Players take online classes in the Thornton Center

Test players and staff 2-3 times per week.
Allow any player or team that doesn't want to play or agree to the terms to opt out.

Its 10 weeks, shelter the kids, test them, pay them for staying in the bubble, Play Ball!!

Contracting? More, its a physical contact sport.

Spreading? Depends. Testing isn't 100% accurate (though it is beneficial). They also interact with more people on a daily basis by being on a team plus classes. So im going to say about the same on that front.

You do realize that most experts claim that the virus spreads almost entirely via respiratory droplets, right?

Naw, just 5. But with oversight and quality assurance the other programs were doing it.... while I don't have faith in the NCAA, Id have more confidence in the conference providing the oversight for 2 months.....conference could send out public health staffers to coordinate it and help implement it...

In fact, traveling and away games should be less of a risk. Already fly privately, they stay quarantined in paid hotels, their only exposure would be to the opposing team and hotel staff.
