Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

My youngest son, 31, called today. He tested positive. He lives in Key West. He manages a hotel and tends bar a couple nights a week. My wife and I have tried to talk him out of the bartending gig since Covid hit but on good nights he makes 500+ in tips, or did when business was normal, so he didn't want to give it up. They serve just enough food to qualify to stay open.

First person I've known well to test positive. Said he felt bad 2 weeks ago for several days and went to get tested. Came back negative. Felt better for about 10 days then Sunday night his girlfriend woke him because he was coughing a lot in his sleep and he was burning up. Said he felt bad enough Monday he was going to go to the ER but was able to get in to see a Dr who is kinda the head man for Covid in Key West. Got tested again and came back positive today.

I had not heard this before - the Dr told him the test is not just negative or positive - if you are positive the test tells how much virus you have? The Dr told him the highest positive he'd seen previously was 10 to the 4th power. My son tested positive with a reading of 10 to the 7th power.

His symptoms are cough, fever, body aches, EXTREME fatigue, loss of taste and smell. No breathing problems. He had mono his senior year of high school and lost 25 pounds in 6 weeks and was so fatigued he couldn't get out of bed for several weeks. He says the fatigue right now is worse than that. Fever goes up and down constantly. Praying for a quick recovery. My oldest son and my daughter have zero fear of Covid and act bullet proof. I'm hoping little brother's experience will nudge them to take more precautions.
This sounds very much like what happened to the folks I work with. We had 13 cases early on and didn't have one for nearly 3 months. Had our 14th early this week but I think he is asymptomatic.

That is interesting about what he was told from the test results.

Here's to your sons full recovery.

This is definitely suspicious. A PCR test multiplies any genetic material in a specimen x thousands-millions of copies, so there's no way of telling a "level" of infection. The probe then detects positive/negative only.

The only legit possibility is that he had an antibody titer drawn, which actually looks for PAST infection/immunity. Was it a blood draw?

I'm not sure. He didn't tell me how they tested, just that they tested. I'll ask next time I talk to him.

The study that sparked the latest controversy was anything but randomized. Not only was it not randomized, outside experts noted, but patients who received hydroxychloroquine were also more likely to get steroids, which appear to help very sick patients with Covid-19. That is likely to have influenced the central finding of the Henry Ford study: that death rates were 50% lower among patients in hospitals treated with hydroxychloroquine.
A flawed Covid study gets Trump's attention — and FDA may pay the price

Why are people like you so completely against the idea of something that hasnt proven conclusively one way or the other, its efficacy?

You are touting a "study", that was not actually a study. At least not in the scientific sense.

Why are you so quick to jump to supporting anything that you believe justifies your unfounded belief in the use of a drug, even that which doesn't adhere to the same rigorous scientific testing that you would expect of any other drug that was being used to treat a medical condition?

I dont think I have posted any studies.

The same rigorous testing for a drug approved decades ago? When people are dying, I am all for those people being given the freedom to make THEIR choice on how to fight it.

Using your beliefs, we'd have a treatment in 10 years maybe. That is how your normal rigorous testing works.

You need to educate yourself on how drug trials are actually ran before you try to argue from a point of complete ignorance.

I mean, if you want to inject bleach if you become infected with covid 19, I guess that is your choice.

I know plenty about them having had a condition for years.

My position on freedom of choice for patients is irrelevant to drug trials. The medicine exists and is safe for almost all.

Your last sentence speaks to how dim you are and where your mental ability has peaked.

Should have known, I ripped thru a post of yours in another thread and you ran.

Let me know when you find a doctor that will prescribe pharmaceutical-grade cocaine for "fatigue".

I've been feeling fatigued lately, and I'm sure, that pharmaceutical-grade cocaine is what I need to cure my fatigue.

Safety, legality, none of that matters because I should be able to have a 100% say in what drugs I choose to use to treat my condition.

Last I checked if someone wanted to inject bleach, there is nothing stopping them. Unless you want to ban bleach, too.

I agree. Everyone who has died and is going to die was in a nursing home. They don’t count as people. Just like anyone with a pre-existing condition. We should lock them in an internment camp and let the virus do its work that way no one else has to be inconvenienced with their issues. I shouldn’t be bothered with their problems. Amirite?
I think you swung and missed

.. Or you could just get a better dealer that isn’t cutting it 10 times before selling it to you . Choices .

You should have that choice. Sorry freedom scares you. It does that to dim people.

Last question, maybe. Has the efficacy of HCL in relation to covid been determined?

Horrible comparison. Hydroxy is already available over the counter in many countries. If you’ve ever gone to Africa you’ve taken it. I have a close friend who’s brother is the US ambassador to Kenya. He had to take it all the time. 200 mg twice a week. It is an extremely safe drug. Now, if you give it at 800 mg a day like some of these studies were then you could cause problems. The normal weekly dose for malaria prophylaxis is 400 mg per week (two 200 mg doses). That versus 5,600 mg per week to patients who are already compromised. There is a study out now about dosage and everything seems to show that higher dosage doesn’t make it work better, but only places patient at higher risk. Could even harm them.

These “teachers” are nuts... There are grave consequences for not having a somewhat normal school year for children. We will see negative impacts of these school shutdowns for years to come.

Teachers don't consider themselves essential. Keep that in mind the next time they complain about school funding.
