Will the Redskins change their name? It's waaaaaaayyyyy overdue imo.
As a former die hard Cowboys fan, I used to detest the redskins, and redskins fans. That said, I ought to be naturally inclined to liking anything that causes them consternation. However, I think the motion to change the name is ridiculous.
At the tail end of my time living in the Hampton Roads area (southeastern VA, very much skins country), there was a lot of talk in the media about this. I don't know if I've not heard anything about it because I don't live there anymore, or if it had gone away.
My thought is this... the term "Redskin" might've been originally deemed an derogatory term for Indians, but throughout the history of language you can find examples of words changing meaning. For example, the word "girl" used to mean any small child - boy or..... girl. At some point in time, and I don't remember exactly when or why anymore, but it became only associated with female children.
Its my thinking that if you walk up to virtually every living person today and say the term "Redskins", they're gonna think either (a) Football team or (b) Potato.
Besides, going back to when I lived there and this was a media driven hot topic, there was all sorts of evidence where actual american indian groups were not offended by it, and most even took a bit of pride in it. So to me the whole "racist" thing seems like white guilt politician grandstanding/gaslighting.
Dan Snyder, back then, made a proclamation that he would never change the team name. I hope he sticks to it.
