Can someone explain to me a reason to hate the woo? I don’t have a strong opinion on it, though I do woo myself, but I’ve never understood why some deeply despise it

You should ask Karen this question.

Yes. Because now it's stuck in my head and I hear the woo, even when no woo exists.

Can we at least agree on the origins of the woo? Any game audio proof to show it was not done in the 80s early 90s?

It sounds like something a group of bossy chicks created in the 90s. They’re probably all Karens by now.

I don't remember it until late '97 and that was from the band mostly. By the end of '98 it was filtering through the stands. I think by '99 it was here (sadly to stay). Here is a clip from the '97 SEC CG and there is no Woo...at least that can be heard....right about the 54:00 mark.

The Woo train has officially left the train station and is now cemented as part of Rocky Top, no need to debate, it will always be here.....

The Osborne Brothers don‘t “WOO!”

therefore there is NO “WOO!” In Rocky Top

Girls “WOO!”...and that’s a GOOD thing...oh you didn’t know that? I’m sorry...

Since I was born on 8-11-68. Well do the math.

I respectfully disagree. I was at UTK from '79 to '86.... 'it' was there.

Let me, Let me, Let me, Let me.... tell you. I have always felt it came along with the popularity of David Allen Coe's; "You Never Even Called Me by My Name" and all of the extra-curricular yells that came along with it.

I wish the 70's-mid/late 90's called and brought Rocky Top back. 'Cause UT ain't won ish since it became fully entrenched.

@Boca Vol I'll refer you to the quote above your own.

Within the stadium, wooooo all the way. All the UT fans woo'ing simultaneously is awesome and gets on the nerves of opposing fans. If you're simply singing the song in your car or at a tailgate, leave out the woo. Its not part of the song.

Longtime Lurker, very rare poster, but this thread is certainly worthy of it! As a Pride of the Southland alum, I am decidedly anti-Woo. It isn't part of the song.. the Osborne Brothers didn't sing it, the band doesn't "play" it. It would be my luck if the origins of the woo stem from the POTS (after all, we cannot sing the lyrics while we're playing, but could "woo" during the slight pause between notes).

BUT, people who sing the lyrics of the chorus along with the woo do not bother me near as much as those who only woo without singing the lyrics. People who woo without singing are either ignorant, lazy, or intentionally disrespecting "Rocky Top"... but they probably still consider themselves real fans, and likely think they even deserve a participation trophy. As another poster earlier referenced, all of Neyland singing "Rocky Top" in unison is much more powerful than the albeit louder "Woo" that only lasts for a second.
