Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

Nothing was. More fun as a kid than a day in the creek.. with a SOLO cup catching crawdads. Nothing. I was maybe 5 when I was taught that they can only swim backwards...so all you had to do was get a cup behind them and then scare them with your other hand from in front. Some of the best times of my life. I wouldnt eat a mudbug if your life depended on it though...lol

Only way to get enough water to even really sit in for us.
The water is close to 4 feet deep behind the dam for about 225 feet by 30 feet wide, and the water is pretty still. I think it almost runs up hill to the dam. My wife was out yesterday running her remote control boat up and down the creek. I'm sure the snapping turtles were terrified.

My latest project: 120 feet of above ground temporary pvc water line to run 6 sprinklers for new grass at new house site. Water will be pumped out of creek with a small Honda 32gpm pump. I about killed myself walking up and down that hill in 90 degree weather today.
Just a hunch, but did it leak much?

I have a creek behind my house and I've been contemplating running a pump from it to water my yard. Once it starts getting dry and hot it never seems to be a priority.

This is temporary to try to keep the new grass alive until Fall. It was just sowed less than 2 months ago. I couldn't get anybody to bring in topsoil and grade last Fall. They were too busy. Then, it rained all Winter and they couldn't get to the topsoil.

Now I would want it to be about a foot deeper for true swimming. But as a kid that sounds great, maybe with more variation in the depth for more options.

I am probably the youngest VNPF that got the priviledge of having to wait outside until I dried off, or getting hosed down if muddy, and then waiting till I dried off. I miss those days now. I didnt like them as much as a kid seeing my friends have all the new devices and tech. But now I appreciate the F out of how my parents raised me.

Just started watching a show called "Travelers" on Netflix. It is about travelers from the future sent back to save humanity. Only 5 or 6 episodes into the 1st season and it has been amazingly good.

With all the garbage going on...it has been a VERY welcome distraction. Thought maybe yall could use a distraction, too..

Louder, you're a cool cat. If you grew up in my neck of the hood we would have been tight. Same goes for Slice, McD , and others. Wish we could have all run the streets back when 72 did though, building hotrods with him . Life hasnt gotten better since the 50s or so...it has gotten worse. I would gladly give up the modern conveniences like the internet etc for the simpler life and happiness that it replaced. Shoot... I am 43 , and I remember the 80s and 90s were better than now, too... this world is screwed.

All you have to do is listen to the music of the 50's and early 60's , or watch Andy Griffith, Leave it to Beaver, Beverly Hillbillies, etc. to get a glimpse of how simple, happy, and carefree life was then. The Russian Cold War and nuclear fears, the Vietnam War, the Hippie movement, and Watergate changed everything. I hope this isn't too political, but just giving my take on things from one who saw it all go down. The music changed and the tv shows changed as the world changed.

One thing that bothered me about the music after that time, and I kinda blame the big bands more than anything, But we lost most regional music. The Beatles, led zeppelin, maybe even Elvis.

Like what I call "southern" music disappeared for a while. It kinda became country that melded with a more western style and lost the hymnal qualities. Not sure when exactly Bluegrass came to be, but even that is more Applachian than hymnal based imo.

There were always specific bands or artists that still did regional music, but it was covered up by all the "rock". Which is good, but it loses some of the qualities from where it started. I like to say it lost its soul somewhere along the way. Great sounds etc, but it was more a sing-a-long rather than something that evolved with its feet in the dirt.

I am in Tennessee where we just built the new house. I go to NC about every week or 10 days to mow and play a little golf. It is only an hour and a half drive on a nice curvy mountain road along a river and a creek part of the way. I really enjoy the drive. I like to drive twisty roads at some speed.
The gorge? I love that stretch of I40 between Waynesville and Newport😂.

That is a nice stretch of road when the mountainside isn't collapsing from rain. My place is much farther north. I go through Erwin and Unicoi (hwy 107), then a winding 2 lane road (hwy 173 through Limestone Cove) that comes out between Hampton and Roan Mountain on 19E. From there, it is about half an hour to the house.
