Once upon a time, America had a flag, it carried great symbolism to many of how great the country was and many flew it proudly.
It was symbolic of the sacrifices our ancestors made, and for many even their own parents, in being willing to lay down their lives to defend it, and therefore the country.
It was symbolic of the founding of the country and all the documents written through the years that made America wonderful. Documents that protected citizens rights, freed slaves, naturalized immigrants, gave voting rights to minority groups and ended segregation, to list but a few.
We even said a pledge to it that talked about liberty and justice for ALL, because we believed in those words and honored the symbolism that the flag stood for those things.
We would stand and look towards the flag, in honor of what it symbolized, as our National Anthem played.
And then they took away the pledge.
And then they allowed the desecration of the flag.
And then they made the flag a political symbol of hatred and racism. They attacked those carrying the flag and attached vile labels to them.
Grandmother, why did they do those things?
Because, sweet child, when there is a symbol powerful enough to pull people together as one nation, as one people, it must first be destroyed in order to divide the people and divide the nation and destroy the country it symbolized.
