Tennessee Vols 4-star QB commit Kaidon Salter’s two best traits

The Tennessee Vols stayed hot on the recruiting trail this past weekend by adding three more four-star recruits to their 2021 recruiting class.
One of those four-star recruits is quarterback Kaidon Salter, who committed to Tennessee on Sunday.
Salter, 6-foot-1/185 lbs from Cedar Hill, TX, is rated by 247Sports as the No. 12 player in the state of Texas and the No. 8 dual-threat quarterback in the nation. They also rate Salter as the No. 88 overall 2021 recruit in the nation.
The Vols currently have an extremely crowded quarterback room. It’s actually been surprising that no one has transferred during the offseason (perhaps that hasn’t happened because of the ongoing coronavirus related shutdown).
It’s clear, however, that Jeremy Pruitt is never going to be satisfied at quarterback. It’s the most important position on the field. Even if a program has a great quarterback, one snap could instantly test a team’s depth.
So it’s smart that Pruitt is loading up on quarterback — especially since Tennessee doesn’t have a great one….yet.
Salter is currently the Vols’ lowest rated four-star commit, but he could end up being one of the most underrated
addictions to UT’s 2021 recruiting class.
That’s because Salter possesses the two most important qualities that a quarterback needs.
Accuracy and the ability to lead.
One of Salter’s 7-on-7 coaches, DeMarquis Brooks, told 247Sports this week “Kaidon’s poise has been tremendous. His leadership this year, he shocked me.”
Not only is Salter a great leader, but he’s a fierce competitor.
“He’s an undeniable competitor. His will to win is unmatched…..you most definitely want the ball in his hands at the end of the game,” said Joey Moss, another one of Salter’s 7-on-7 coaches.
As for his accuracy?
Brooks described it as “pinpoint”.
“His accuracy did a total 180, not to say he wasn’t accurate before but he’s pinpoint accurate now. I love his deep ball accuracy. A lot of people throw deep but they’re not accurate. You don’t put limits on his arm talent,” said Brooks.
It doesn’t matter how far a quarterback can throw a ball if they’re not accurate. Vol fans know this all too well. Josh Dobbs was great at Tennessee, but he struggled with accuracy at times. Current starting quarterback Jarrett Guarantano has incredible arm talent, but his accuracy has left a lot to be desired.
Combing pinpoint accuracy with an insatiable desire to win is the recipe for an elite quarterback (just look at former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow….those are his two best qualities as well).
It’s certainly too early to crown Salter as the next great SEC quarterback, but he absolutely has the tools to be a force for the Volunteers.
Pruitt and quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke (who was instrumental in Salter’s decision to commit to UT) were wise to go to Texas and pursue Salter — he could end up being a game changer for Tennessee.
