Mike Leach (Texas Tech)

Nick Saban accomplished squat before his big break at LSU

his record at Michigan State was 34-24-1

his bowl appearances: Independence, Aloha, Sun
record: 0-3

some of you guys are basically saying that because Leach hasn't taken a lowly Texas Tech program to the same status as Texas and Oklahoma in 9 seasons, he's not worthy to coach at Tennessee

no use in arguing. If you can't recognize untapped coaching potential, then you can't be persuaded

Maybe, but the key to success here at Tennessee is going to be recruiting. He has made his success by getting leftovers from Texas. Leftovers from Tennessee just won't cut it in the SEC. They key is can he recruit nationally?

I think it's funny how a winning bowl record and 8 straight bowl appearances at Texas F'ing Tech is somehow being turned against Leach as a negative

honestly, I'm not sure if he'd be able to snare 5-Star players out of California, Georgia and Ohio

As for skill positions, I'm pretty sure that he'd have enough quality players gravitating to his system. QB's and receivers would not be an issue at all.

He would have to be able to recruit defensively and of course an offensive line

as for RB's, there's tons of Mike Leach prototype RB's out there. He goes for smaller and quicker running backs who can shoot through the large splits
More of a Travis Stephens than an Arian Foster type

recruiting would be one legitimate concern. He'd have to be able to go into surrounding states and steal players. Of course, whoever the coach is at Tennessee will have this challenge

I will say that he has a knack for spotting diamonds in the rough though

The guy lost the Galleyfurniture.com bowl, the Alamo Bowl, and the Cotton (to a pre-Saban Alabama team). He can't beat Bama without Saban. And, if you want to know how many points his offense will put up in a league with defenses, there's your indicator (13). Our hapless 2005 offense scored 3 points and lost by the same margin to that Bama team as did one of Leach's best teams. I can't see how you think he could beat Alamaba with Saban.

He won the Tangerine, Houston, Insight, Holiday, and Gator Bowl, but that's the pinnacle of his success to date... and that falls well short of UT expectations.

Dude, please..Many of those bowls are equal if not better than many of the bowls we have been to the past few years...That Alabama team your so high on that held them to 10 points held us to THREE that year...Bama finished 10-2 on the season...It's stupid that your actually trying to compare scores against SEC teams...If Your going to go that route you left out where they demolished Ole Miss TWICE with Cutcliffe as their coach and Eli Manning as their QB but you I guess forgot to add those games int here huh?...Also the fact that they are 2 out of the last 3 games winners against OU and beat the #1 team in the country two weeks ago..but I guess thats all rubbish isn't it?...I mean We are only talking Texas Tech..In a conference with some pretty powerful teams I believe they have held their own just fine...Leach is the PERFECT coach for UT...I would seriously like to hear the arguments of Your choices...If it starts with Kiffin then do not even bother as He has done ZERO to even gain consideration in my eyes except for having a famous father...Let's hear it my brother :)

fulmer didnt have any notables before taking over for Major's, he just motivated his players and won games. i mean, leach has bigger bragging rights than a working offense and a 9-4 record in the atlantic 10. they actually thought this guy was gonna make a difference? its laughable. 9-4 in atl 10..

i read this on clawnson and got a good chuckle,

"Clawson describes his coaching style as one that utilizes the available talent to maximize success. His philosophy focuses on getting individual playmakers more touches rather than sticking to a rigidly-defined system. His offenses have displayed components of the Pro-Style, Spread and Power Running attacks."

i get it now. we cant blame clawson cause we have no power in our running game and we can't get the ball to our play makers. its so simple.

Whyyyoming good lawd!

Please, please, please football gods allow Texas Tech to get to the NCG (not likely, OU+Conference CG=at least one loss). But I hope they find a way to make it through those two games so they can get exposed by an SEC team (UF or UA) because it will be that much sweeter for these Leach minions to see. And after 8 seasons this is by far his best team, and if they play UF in NCG it will be embarrasing.

i've gone to all the links and read all the info posted.. but still haven't seen anything that proves Kiffin is the master recruiter.. especially since USC is still getting #1 classes. I'm just saying don't hire a coach because he's at a powerhouse program that someone else built.

The biggest problem with your decision making is that you cant take yourself out of the here-and-now to be able to make an objective decision. I'll try to type this slowly because I know you have read it but you keep missing it. USC WAS NOT a program that "recruited itself" when Kiffin was hired there. USC was in horrible shape when Carroll was hired and he brought in Kiffin. When USC was transformed from horrible shape into the ridiculous program they have now, do you know how was in charge of the entire recruiting system for them? Kiffin.

I wouldn't assume that a Big XII team will roll over like a slow Big Ten team. There's speed in Texas as well. That's why the SEC's been trying to raid the state for recruits in recent years

Alabama will get crushed by Florida in the SEC CG. If TT can win out, they will play a one loss Florida team. Florida should be favored but I wouldnt count out TT. There are a lot of people on here who pretty much kiss the ass of Muschamp and TT torched his defense.
If Leach were hired as the head coach, I would hope Tennessee would give him enough money to go out and get the best DC that money can buy.

they have already rolled two top 10 teams and about to play an OU team that everyone fears on their schedule. texas with an sec minded dc couldn't stop em. tech's numbers speak for themselves and if they beat OU by more than 14, which is very likely, then what? still unproven? if you watched the tech/osu game it was sick watching their receivers making catch after catch and a quarterback that ran that spread like a mack truck. wonder what that is like?

I think florida and tech are the two scariest teams in the country with oklahoma and texas right behind. top 5 are 3 big12, 2 sec.

I know Alabama is undefeated but they aren't better than Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, Texas Tech, or USC.

Very likely? Haha. Put down the crack pipe and step away slowly.

On Texas Tech beating Oklahoma by more than 14? You arent seriously that drunk right now, so early in the morning. Is it possible, sure, guess so. Is it anywhere near the realm of "very likely" or even "likely" for that matter? Not at all.

Boyd does not want to run a spread offense that has the QB running the ball. He wants an offense where he gets to put the ball in the air. So I think he would be ok with it. But, lets hope he does not have to make that decision.

I should have asked all those Texas Techs fans I saw over the weekend, what they thought about rumors regarding their coach leaving.

Okay. Show me the turnaround in the won/loss record. The 9-3 season in 1995 is as good or better than any one he's had except this year. One year does not a turnaround make. We had a 10 win season from a coach we just let go.

Why on earth would we hire someone who, as another poster put it, who makes his living off of 7 to 9 win seasons with 3 to 5 losses?

You can start by looking at your own post:

With Leach
2007 9 4
2006 8 5
2005 9 3
2004 8 4
2003 8 5
2002 9 5
2001 7 5
2000 7 6

Before Leach
1999 6 5
1998 7 5
1997 6 5
1996 7 5
1995 9 3

Take away the 9 win season in '95 and TT never had more than 7 wins in a season. That matches his worst record the last 8 years and he has never had less than an 8 wins season the last 6 years. TT beat both Texas and Oklahoma for the first time under him. He is 10-0 this year. All with 3 star talent. That, is coaching.

Everybody said the same thing about Spurrier before he came to Florida. The continual argument we keep hearing over and over again about the Bama game is old old and pathetic. It is a single game. Bama's defense stopped everybody that year. To see what he is capable of in the SEC look at what KY's offense did under him. They led the SEC in offense, at a time when the Fun-n-Gun was at it's pinnacle under Spurrier. He turned Oklahoma's offense around in a single season.

Good recruiting and a great DC, and he will crank out conference championships in the SEC like Spurrier did at Florida.

im sure they laughed at meyer and his smokescreen offense but look what he can do with a stud defense.. and a horse at qb, and about 11 guys in the offensive rotation that run sub 4.4 and more recruiting stars than hollywood blvd and... lol.
