Also, not to hijack the Civil War discussion (used to be a history teacher), but slavery is not a states' rights issue. It's a human rights issue. To classify it any different is ridiculous. There have been slaves of all colors and creeds throughout time. And in all instances, taking away the humanity and freedom of someone else and regarding them as less than human is immoral and repugnant.
It is a bad thing, but I ain't gonna judge basically all of ancient humanity for what they practiced with subjugation.

Enlightenment is a good thing sometimes, but it doesn't put us up on some high moral judgment pedestal. Basically every civilization in the history of mankind practiced slavery to one degree of brutality or another.

I sure don't mean to be that guy on a Friday night to come in here with doom and gloom but I found out this afternoon that my mom has Dementia. As many of you know I just buried my Dad last September after 12 years with Dementia. Now we are about to walk through it again with my mom. I love my Vol family and wanted to share this with you as I know in here over the years we have shared in so many laughs and heart aches both in football and in real life. Appreciate your prayers for this one is going to be more challenging in so many ways. Thanks ahead of time for the encouragement and prayers I will receive for all of you. GO VOLS!! Can't wait until August !!
So very very sorry to read this. Will continue to lift your family up in prayers and good wishes. Stay strong and look to the ONE who comforts all.

No doubt. I'm 37 and have been with this company for 15 months. Owners, management and co-workers are all great people.

It's a very interesting niche market and we do business all over the world but still have a small business structure. It is the only job I've ever had that I thoroughly enjoy every day and I've quickly been given opportunity to advance. I also love living/working in the St. Augustine area.

Safe to say I will be here until I retire.
You and I are in the same county. I'm off 210.

Love ya Bass, but this is recency bias.

Most of The Masters since 1970 are on YouTube. I swear to you that they played good golf before the late 90s.
I'm late on this and yes they played very good golf then and yes I've watched a lot of golf pre 1995. There we're good golfers in Jack's time but no way was there the depth of good golfers in that time.
Thats what sets Tiger apart from Jack, imo.. When Tiger was in his prime the others were playing for 2nd and they knew it..

The Leaderboard for the 1986 Masters:
1. Jack Nicklaus
2. Tom Kite (1 major - HOF)
3. Greg Norman (2 majors - HOF)
4. Seve Ballesteros (5 majors - HOF)
5. Nick Price (3 majors - HOF)
6. Tom Watson (8 majors - HOF)
T8. Payne Stewart (3 majors - HOF)
T8. Bob Tway (1 major)
T11. Sandy Lyle (2 majors - HOF)
T11. Corey Pavin (1 major)
T16. Bernhard Langer (2 majors - HOF)
T16. Ben Crenshaw (2 majors - HOF)

Yes, Jack was known for feasting on weak competition.

Lol I appreciate the work you put into writing out that response. I probably phrased it incorrectly, but the depth of today's PGA pool of major winners is just insane. I do think winning a major in Tiger's era is a greater challenge than in Jack's. May just be my opinion -- I'm in my 30's and obviously didnt get to watch Nicklaus in his day.

But also means we don’t have to put them on actual pedestals in our town centers.

don’t like barry bonds never will because Hes a cheat with that being said Pete Rose should be in the hall of fame and I enjoyed the Mark McGuire,Barry bonds and Sammy Sosa years of baseball.more so of Bonds and McGuire saving baseball due to the strike..good stuff right there when baseball was fun.
Pete is a cheat too. The thing about it is that most of these guys didn't need to do it. Bonds still was great without the juice. McGwire, Sosa, all those guys didn't need to do it. Pete didn't need to gamble, either.

Think McGwire did them mainly to get over injuries.. Injuries were a big problem for Big Mac.
Also I'm a Cardinal fan so bias might enter in to my thinking..lol

I can’t read this thread with all the oddly named flu with 98% survivability rate talk, so this may have already been discussed.... but the VQ podcast said they could see another commitment in the next week or so and the RTI podcast said they expected one in the next day or so.

Before I start this, I’m not a Tiger hater. In real life, I’m usually having to defend Tiger against the “Lol, 18 > 15, bro!” crowd. Like I said to Bass, Tiger may end up being the GOAT before it’s all said and done.

I think the era from 2010-present is the strongest golf has ever been top to bottom, by a significant margin.

2000-2009? I think golf was kind of in a rebuilding phase. There was a glut of mid-level talent that didn’t really ever develop to its full potential, and younger players that would come into their own in the next decade. 2005-09 was particularly weak, when Els and Vijay kind of fell off, and the younger stars of the 10s weren’t quite there yet. If you want to know what I mean, take a look at the 2008 US Open final leaderboard. Or better yet, consider that Tom Watson was one bad tee shot away from winning the 2009 British Open, at age 59!

There were also weak eras in Jack’s day too. And admittedly, golf was more “top-heavy” in those days, but it’s not by as much as people want to believe. I think a lot of it comes from how much easier it is to remember the “also-rans” from recent times than older eras. For example, people remember guys like Anthony Kim and think “Yeah, that guy was pretty good. I remember a few years when people thought he might be the next big thing.” Whereas his 70s-80s counterparts, guys like JC Snead, Isao Aoki, Hubert Green, Andy North, etc. have somewhat been lost to golf’s collective memory, even though all the guys I mentioned probably had more success than Kim ended up having.

Feel free to disagree. Been loving the golf talk for the past day.

Golf's popularity exploded when Tiger came on the scene and with the great Jim Nantz leading the charge with his broadcasts of the Masters and other major tournaments helped that explosion too. When I was young, you were lucky to be able to see the final two rounds of any tournament, much less the majors. Now, with several networks showing start to finish of all tournaments putting more eyes on golf in general, the current players and those from the last 15 or 20 years are all reaping the benefits. I personally would have loved to see a 30 yr old Woods battle a 30 yr old Bear with the same ball and same clubs and then judge who is the GOAT.

I have a project for the day. My 9 year old came up with an idea last night and asked me to help him with it. He said he needed a series of 5 to 15 sec music clips to cover different scenarios in Fortnite. For instance...when he starts a game...if he obliterates someone...if he wins a game...if he takes out multiple people in one firefight...long distance sniper shot...etc...etc.

Starting a game was actually a pretty easy one. We both quickly decided on the opening bells of "Hells Bells". Winning a game, we're probably going with a few seconds of "We are the Champions", although he also likes the idea of using a clip of "Ladies and Gentlemen, Elvis has left the building". Probably will do both to give him an option.

Looking forward to doing this. It should be a fun way to spend some time.

Golf may be the sport that technology effected the most... have you seen drivers from even just 20 years ago? Guys were hitting with legit clubs made from wood and scoring low. Golf is unlike any sport, you could look like Bartolo Colon and win a major. It’s probably the one sport that the generations past could walk in with today’s equipment and be on equal footing. 50 years ago offensive lineman in football were like 230 they ain’t making it today.

I spent a good bit of time yesterday doing something that needed doing for quite a while but used to taking them to a repair shop to be done and that is re-screening a few windows. I always thought it would be a lot of time and trouble to do, but it was much easier than I had ever thought, and a whole lot cheaper than paying a repair shop to do it!

Agree. I think that’s a “Mount Rushmore of Fantasy Sports Matchups” quality event.

To your other point, I don’t think golf fully realized the benefit of the Tiger boom until roughly 2010 onward. And I think the 2000s suffered from golf’s lack of youth appeal in the late 80s-early 90s. If you want to know what kids thought of golf pre-Tiger, watch Happy Gilmore. “Green Jacket. Gold Jacket. Who gives a s**t?”

But man, has golf been strong in the last decade? I mean, you have brilliant golfers like Rickie Fowler, probably a multiple major winner in ANY other era, that can’t break through and win one! It’s unreal the quality of golf right now. A real shame that Tiger hasn’t been at his best for most of it.

No desire to interrupt the Tiger/Jack debate, but I'm quite convinced that C-19 can be greatly tamed by Vit D. I keep coming back to Iceland. Vitamin D supplementation is critical in Nordic countries, and they do so regularly through food and pills. Their mortality rate is hanging there at about 0.4%. Every major region or population group that has been particularly bad is also known for having low Vitamin D. Every one. There were studies done on the 1918 Spanish Flu that concluded that Vitamin D greatly reduced mortality. Black Americans are dying at a rate double their population representation, and they are known for having D deficiency at more than 2x white Americans. In addition to improving immunity, Vit D also modulates the release of inflammatory cytokines, which is what is killing people now (not the virus), and what what killed them in 1918.

Guys, the vaccine already exists. It's Vitamin D. The summertime sun doesn't kill the flu, the summertime sun makes us immune to the flu.
What do you take daily?

This sums up my thoughts on what I see played out on here through the years, since we have nothing better to do. Just skip on by or ignore if uninterested.

The more distant in age most people are from past eras of golf or any sport for that matter, the less understanding and respect they have for it. Human nature of fans. They sell out to basic stats because it doesn't require them to think critically. They simply cannot imagine somebody as good or better from the past than what they see today.

A good example would be UT football with Reggie White, Peyton Manning, or Eric Berry. Simply the best at their positions, right? Most would have no idea how Doug Atkins dominated in his day - means zip to them. They cannot connect that he was on UT's 1951 NC team, that he was on the All American first team the next year, that he was drafted in the first round. Doesn't matter that he went on to play 16 seasons in the NFL. Doesn't matter that his teams won the NFL championship twice, he was an 8 time pro bowler, that his jersey is retired at UT and with the Saints. The guy was 6'8" and 260 lbs. He dwarfed other lineman and terrorized NFL QB's. But ask for a list of UT greats today from fans and he is rarely on it. Too distant in time for many people, especially those that do not dig into the game.

Which is why guys like Ben Crenshaw have been so valuable with teaching and chronicling golf history since retirement. Funny, the great golfers today have deep respect for the golfers in past eras because of the history that has been transferred to them by the past greats. Johnny Miller has been friends with and totally sold out on Jack's greatness despite competing against him for years. Rickie Fowler grew up a Tiger fan, and has openly adopted Jack as his mentor even though he is about 50 years older. Tiger grew up a Jack fan with posters on his bedroom wall - which inspired him to work toward greatness. Tiger and Arnie were the best of friends despite Arnie being about 50 years older . Arnie mentored Tiger a great deal and never left when Tiger fell apart personally. Nearly all of the young gun greats have deep respect for past greats and study the history going back to Ben Hogan and beyond. Many of the greats still use golf swing fundamentals that Hogan used and mental approach which Jack was dominant using during his day - including Tiger. Nobody who ever played the game was more creative than Seve. Most of the greats today have learned how he made recovery shots and got creative in different conditions with an unparalleled will to win and get the ball in the hole. But how many can connect the fire and emotion that Tiger played with to how Seve also played in his day? Guess who Tiger was watching besides Jack, Tom, Greg, etc. when he was younger?

Fanboys and bandwagons don't get that. Funny that. Takes all kinds I guess.
