To be fair, the changes in golf technology from the 60's through the 80's is not comparable to the advancements made from the 90's to present. For those who really want to understand the differences, and are willing to consider the facts regarding Nicklaus' game, the following articles are a worthwhile read.To be fair, a lot of it was just keeping up with equipment improvements. Tiger and Jack were just good enough to make it obviously necessary.
A quote from Sports Illustrated...
They were talking about Nicklaus.“He rarely had to take anything out of his golf bag but his driver, wedge, putter and towel. … Meanwhile, just about everybody else, including [Dick] Hart and [Shelley] Mayfield, was wilting in the heat like a yellow rose of somewhere.”
In 1982, Couples was a limberbacked 22-year-old with immense flexibility. He averaged 268.7 yards in driving distance, which was eighth on the PGA Tour.
In 2009, Couples was a 49-year-old with a decade-and-a-half battling serious back problems. He averaged 297.5 yards in driving distance, which was 24th on the PGA Tour.
Could you imagine if there were a player on the PGA Tour today who could consistently hit the ball 360+ yards, strike the ball like Sergio Garcia and putt as well if not better than Tiger Woods?
Well, that would essentially be Jack Nicklaus, if he were transplanted to today’s PGA Tour during the prime of his career.
How far would golf's legends drive the ball using modern equipment?
