In 1999, Tennessee opened its defense of their national championship with Wyoming. The defense kept UT in the game by collecting 13 sacks, 4 turnovers, and a fumble return for a touchdown. Tee Martin threw for 264 yards and Jamal Lewis, returning from a knee injury, ran 25 times for 159 yards and 3 TDs, in the 42-17 victory.

Willian Howard was a workhorse during the ‘86 season. Howard had 16 consecutive rushes vs Ole Miss to set an NCAA record, 36 carries vs Mississippi State, and 30 carries for 158 yards and a touchdown vs Vanderbilt, to carry the Vols 35-20 victory. Howard finished the season with 787 yards and 14 TDs.

In 1997, Terry Fair was instrumental in the Vols SEC Championship. Fair recorded 39 tackles, 5 interceptions, 9 pass breakups, and returned 19 punts for 272 yards. During the SEC Championship game vs Auburn, Fair had 157 punt return yards, including a 45 yarder, that helped the Vols win 30-29. His punt return yards are a single game record for Tennessee. Fair was named All-SEC for the second consecutive season.

In game two of the 2011 season UT played Cincinnati. Tyler Bray had a great game, throwing for 405 yrds and 4TDs. His biggest, and best, target was Justin Hunter. Hunter grabbed 10 receptions for 156 yards and 1TD in the 45-23 victory.
Well on his way to numerous honors, Hunter was injured in the Florida game and missed the remainder of the season.

Brendan Downs came to UT via Tennessee High in Bristol in 2011. Downs saw action as a freshman, and had one start vs Buffalo. During his junior season, he had 12 receptions for 70 yards and 2TDs. Downs finished his career appearing in 43 games, where he caught 19 passes for 155 yards and 4 touchdowns.

In 1983, the Vols finished the regular season 8-3 and were invited to the Citrus Bowl to play Maryland. Reggie White knocked Boomer Esiason out of the game, but the Terps still found a way to lead 20-16 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Johnnie Jones scored two touchdowns in the final quarter to lead the Vols to a 30-23 victory. Jones finished with 29 carries for 154 yards and 2 TDs.

The thing that impresses me is the sheer amount of work that goes into this. I daresay each post requires about an hour or more of research to get done.

One of the hardest things you can ever do is to do something creative on a schedule. The "Tennessee vs The Maxims" thingies I do take between three and six hours (or more) each time. PeayGolf is also doing a similar thing for UT Basketball over on that forum.

1952. Tennessee vs Alabama.
In his first game of his career (missed the first three games with injury), Jimmy Wade ripped through the Tide Defense for 153 yards and a score in the Vols 20-0 victory. Wade finished the season with 333 yards.

The Monday after the North Texas game some guy ran a want ad in the Daily Beacon for a head football coach. One of the job requirements listed was the ability to work with "an antique athletic director."

I had terrific seats for the North Texas game. The final play summarized the Vols game-long futility. Tennessee's QB threw the ball out of bounds to stop the clock, but it was already at zero. UT receivers were open in the end zone.

Curt Watson was an All-SEC running back 3 times and left UT as it’s all time leading rusher. The “Crossville Comet” had one of his best games in the ‘71 season vs Kentucky. The visiting Vols only led by 7, but Watson broke four tackles and scored from 26 yrds out to give the Vols a 21-7 victory. For the day, Watson rushed 30 times for 152 yards.

In front of Cumberland County High School sits an A-4 "Skyhawk" done up in the colors of the Blue Angels. It commemorates one of CCHS's most respected graduates, Curt Watson.

After UT, Watson played two years in the NFL (New Orleans and Green Bay) then joined the Navy and went on to an 11-year career as a Naval Aviator including a four year stint with the Blue Angels. He returned to a hero's welcome with the Blue Angels during an airshow at McGhee-Tyson Air Base in 1982 or '83 (I was there but the memory is fuzzy). After the Navy he was a pilot for FedEx.

He was elected a member of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame (1999) and the Tennessee Aviation Hall of Fame (2015).

1969, the Vols were ranked #3 and hosted South Carolina. UT was leading 16-14 with only 5 minutes left, but Bobby Scott led the Vols 76 yards for the game clinching touchdown, the points coming on a 40 yrd pass to Gary Kreis. Kreis finished the game with 151 receiving yards in the 29-14 victory.

In the fifth game of 1928, UT’s Buddy Hackman returned the opening kickoff 95 yrds to lead the Vols to a 26-7 victory over Washington & Lee. Hackman and the other “Touchdown Twin,” Gene McEver, had huge games, with great defensive efforts by Hobo Thayer and Arthur Tripp. The victory was the 150th win in school history!
