Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

I’m hearing Knox County is getting ready to issue shelter in place order but from talking to Mayor Jacobs recently I’m not sure if that will happen or not. We shall see.

WHO considers 'airborne precautions' for medical staff after study shows coronavirus can survive in air

I think we still don’t know enough about this virus yet to discount some transmission variables as being definitely out of play. There is scientific speculation requiring further research out there that it may have up to a 3 hour float time. Even if they disprove that form of transmission I’ll continue to treat this virus as serious and dangerous.

Do you wonder at all why the CCP was using fine mist water machines to spray everything down on a fairly daily basis. They were spraying up into the air and as high as possible up buildings with no way for anyone besides Spider-Man to have touched and contaminated those surfaces. Why?
Maybe the stuff I read was older than the report from last week you provided. This situation seems to change quickly so you may certainly be correct. My guess is, like you said, it is unknown so they are being cautious with the spraying. Regardless, you can’t seriously think Spider-Man couldn’t get up there. After all, he can do what a spider can.

Was perusing the news channels. There’s slight disparities in numbers, but they are very close from network to network. WW = (Deaths/Total cases) 15,374/351,731= .043.
US - 462/38739 = .012

CNN and FOX total numbers very close, yielding about the same percentages.
As of now, 4% mortality rate world wide. In the US, we’re holding at less than 1.5%.

I think you had some decimal misplacement on the original post. 😉

The media coverage was not like today you are correct. However I’m arguing it was different for a reason. The economy is tanking because we are going into massive quarantines that will cause widespread temporary unemployment and multiple percentage drops in GDP. We are going into those quarantines not because of the media but because our health officials are telling us it’s necessary to avoid the worst outcomes.

I personally question our willingness to continue this for long. I think we’ll end up running the experiment of just how bad it will look if we get back to something more normal within a few weeks.

Disagree. We have made medicine the center of the world now. There is a media driven component here.

I've said all along none of the doctors are wrong, given their goals. The problem is society all of a sudden buying in 100% that these are the goals best for society as a whole.

These same doctors would have views on diet, exercise, etc that are just as legitimate. Society has decided they are ok with not following these.

The media has helped to drive the fear that has led to everyone living their life based on doctor recommendations concerning one illness. That is insanity.

But would you even consider say 50,000 probable?

Over what time period?

If we flatten the curve by mid-April we can hopefully keep the death rate from exceeding that rough 0.8% number.

Unless this ends up being highly seasonal, infections are going to go on for quite some time (unless we lock down and then are prepared to do it again for future outbreak clusters, and I don’t think that’s going to happen). So over time I wouldn’t be surprised to see us surpass that number even if we flatten the curve. Maybe by a lot.

But again I’m out of my league when it comes to epidemiology and viral modeling. I don’t have enough data on how it spreads, how weak quarantines actually impact contact rates, what real hospitalization rates and ICU rates look like, etc. Just don’t have good data or any expertise in how diseases spread and tax medical care systems. Not my area of expertise.

well... hmmm...... "A few of GOP senators are dying for us to come to an agreement... so let's get this done." mic drop
Mitch agrees. The most telling thing to me was Cocaine Mitch have very specific examples of pork the Dems are trying to add to the bill. Chuckie did not challenge a single one of them and only provided fluff rhetoric while not attacking any GOP pork. There’s a clear message. Mitch called the Dems out and it stuck cleanly.

I have a 10 gallon still.
Love it. I don't have one but it's kind of a family tradition. Whiskey is in my blood (literally almost all the time). My great grandfather was one of the most notorious bootleggers in his own and surrounding counties in his day. He went to jail for 6 months during prohibition.

edit: he claimed he made alcohol in jail

Oh sure, Mitch don't like pork. Biggest Mud Turtle in DC, as I see it.

Not saying he isn’t. But he handed Chuckie his ass on this narrative. The clear take away from that Point/Counter Point is Dems we’re accused of holding up the bill over pork and failed to prove they weren’t

Props to you for making it through a McConnell sentence to the other side. I'll take your word for it.
