Coronavirus (No politics)

Unfortunately, if you have undergone chemotherapy and radiation your immune system takes years to recover and sometimes never fully recovers. My wife had to undergo 35 rounds of radiation and 17 rounds of chemotherapy. Her last chemotherapy treatment was in February of 2019 and her white blood cell count is still about half of what it should be. Her doctor from MD Anderson told her that data from China showed that nearly 60% of cancer patients died when infected and cancer survivors had about a 30% death rate.
Dang man, hate that about your wife. I'm sure you're concerned about her as I am mine. They gave mine chemo for lupus a couple of times, and it was hard on her. I didn't know that about the blood count.

I will tell you this. If you have not locked your mortgage loan, you are out of luck. Lenders do not want to lend unless you want to pay points and rates are bad as of today. Some warehouse lines are making margin calls to lenders and putting a choke hold on money to buy. You are good if your locked in but if not, it’s going to be awhile. This uncertain environment has made lenders skittish and they don’t want any business as of now.
They’re bogged down processing the applications they have. I expect they’ll lower rates again once they work through this batch. Or so I’ve read on a financial forum.

Do people have long term damage from pneumonia?
I think it may be determined due to how quickly get treatment. I had Pneumonia 4 years ago and sought treatment immediately. After 3 weeks, I was released from the hospital and felt great. But, I had a continuing respiratory problem for the next 3 years. Picked up a lung infection that put me in the hospital for 3 weeks. I'm on oxygen now and may be for the rest of my life. I was a smoker for 62 years and am sure that contributed somewhat.

62 years? That sounds like my father.

My father grew up on a small farm in SW Virginia, and their main cash crop was tobacco. When he was about 70 I asked him how old he was when he started smoking. He said "I can't remember a time when I didn't smoke".

That is sort of how it was in the old days. We started young. Just a puff here and there. Nothing serious until we hit high school.

Which is peanuts, really. Sorry to be heartless, but 2200 old people dying isn't news.
If they pass away prematurely because of the virus and yes you are a heartless person for making this post. Reported. This statement is unacceptable and Volnation would be better without you here. . My mom is 85 and I am very concerned for her health and am very afraid that I or one of the caregivers employed may bring it into the house unintentionally. I am about ready to close the doors and hole up for an extended period of time to reduce exposure risks to her.

34 year old male who recently visited Disney world died today of Covid-19. 52 percent of hospital admissions for Covid are under the age of 50. The age for Covid-19 serious illnesses In The US is lower than what has been officially reported in other countries who are having major problems with the pandemic.

I will say he had preexisting conditions but it's grabbing a lot of young that have none. Do not be complacent with this stuff people.

I did not hear of his pre-existing conditions but was alarmed to hear a person of such a young age passed away from Covid. I know now that I may not be able to shrug this disease off if I catch it like many others have( Hanks, Durant and others).

I think he had asthma and testicular cancer back in 2016. Not enough preexisting for me to say thats why it killed him. I just think this stuff is bad and have since the first few videos out of China two months ago.

Tennessee seems to be doing okay but Georgia, especially Atlanta, is getting hammered. There were 10 new deaths in Georgia in the last 24 hours.

The hotbeds that I’m noticing are in major markets on the coasts or especially cities that have lots of international flights. Atlanta fits that category.

Listen: as a doctor, the hardest thing about this for me is having to tell people that we just don't know. Anyone who says otherwise is FOS. I hate that. I'm not sleeping well. Every day is stressful because I'm supposed to have the answers, and I just don't.

Are the doomsday models right? Are we overreacting? Is China lying? Are our efforts helping? Does isolation potentially cause more harm than good?

I, seriously, have no idea. We are conducting a national/global experiment with no concrete data to go on.

My current position is that it's better to err on the side of caution, NOT lose your #*&! and go buy up all the toilet paper and Beanie Weenies, stay home if you are sick, avoid public gatherings, and see what the numbers look like in a week.

I really would implore those on each extreme position to breathe, give others grace, and see what the next week or so holds.

This is exactly what needs to be done.

Cities are unnecessary, but we seem bent on keeping them around regardless. They are going to be breeding grounds for this kind of thing.

I think everyone’s predictions will be shown to be wrong a year from now. More Younger people are requiring critical care than what’s being reported. I assure you it ain’t looking good in my area. I think it’s way to early to write this off as only a disease that is dangerous for the elderly.
What area are you from?

That's been my biggest concern, that we don't really know and understand how this virus operates and what measures are best to employ to combat it. I've not posted what I think is the outcome because I have no feel for how it might go down. People that say it's just another flu and it's all a big nothing are foolish. People that think the world is coming to an end are foolish. People that are making these decisions have much more information than we do. Their concern is enough concern for me to take precautions.

The info my wife was getting about a week and a half ago from some of the doctors/nurses she knows or has talked with, some that are up in the Seattle area, was the eye opener for me. Said it’s not discriminating. Perfectly healthy young people are crashing just as fast as the elderly. The crazy part is this thing will show sings that the patient has rebounded for a day or two, they’ll ween meds, and then they’ll suddenly crash and go into full cardiac arrest or mass organ failure. Obviously those are the cases that they’re seeing that are actually admitted to the ED so percentage wise it’s not huge, but still it’s a little jarring.
