Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

Trumpโ€™s task force have been doing their best to warn people and there is all the advice anyone needs at coronavirus.gov

People just arenโ€™t listening...

The misinformation that this is โ€œjust the fluโ€ is worrisome. The most optimistic data we have is that this is 10-15x deadlier than the flu. Hundreds of thousands of Americans are going to die this year from either this, or from other things like stroke or heart attack because hospitals will be so over capacity they canโ€™t get the care they need.
If you think hundreds of thousands of Americans are going to die from this youโ€™re severely misinformed

For weeks Trump told us what a great job the Chinese were doing (Xi working very hard!). Suddenly, it's turned to this:

He also put a travel restriction to/from China in late January. The reaction at the time was that was an overreaction caused by his xenophobia and racism. Now, he's not taking it seriously enough. Which is it?

"State of Emergency " declared statewide here in Boston yesterday. Went to Dunkin this AM, short lines. Cashier said she was ready to kill herself it was so slow earlier.

Also my office has been on telecommute since Monday for those who can. Harvard telling all students to go home.

Hello self induced recession.
What does working from home have to do with a recession?

Would they cancel the college football season if this is still around or worse than it is now in September ??

Here in Louisville, KY there is growing concern over the fate of the Kentucky Oaks and Derby. It draws in Hundreds of Thousands of guests (from all over the country and the world) for the entire weekend of racing - to be watched in a giant stadium where everyone is packed in like sardines and having a good time with betting and mint juleps. A day full of a lot of close proximity contact with strangers.

The race will be run, no doubt. Will there be spectators? But what will COVID19 be doing a month from now? My guess is we will still be heading on the upward trajectory of the big exponential bell curve.

Canceling or reducing audience attendance would have a HUGE negative economic impact on the city (and the rest of the state, who love the taxes generated by Louisville)

I haven't tracked everything on the topic so sorry if this has been covered earlier but isn't COVID more infectious/contagious than seasonal flu? If this is the case (particularly if it turns out to be significantly so) isn't the problem not so much the per incident mortality rate but total mortality? (1% of a 100 is still less than .5% of 1000 sort of thing)

If you believe itโ€™s going โ€œto change how healthcareโ€ is in this country, you must be young or not experienced in actual healthcare. Because itโ€™s not that big a deal at all

Do you even know what Iโ€™m referring to, or you just gonna jump directly to the insults?

Link to this reaction? And not some randos on Twitter. Did Pelosi say this? Did Schumer?

The Facts on Trump's Travel Restrictions

Did Trump say China was doing a good job? Yes or no.

Media talking heads.

Coronavirus quarantine, travel ban could backfire, experts fear
The coronavirus exposes the history of racism and "cleanliness"

In early February, potential quarantines and travel bans were xenophobic overreactions. The Vox article sums up their attitude at the time the best...the panic is based on "something other than health." Now, nobody is doing enough to stop it. The epitome of Monday morning quarterbacking.

Not trying to insult you at all, just tired of hearing people who donโ€™t know what they are talking about saying BS about the virus and itโ€™s effects. This thread will be humorous to read in 5 months

He did, and he was wrong, just like he is about all sorts of stuff. I don't know what that has to do with my original point though, which is that when the travel restrictions to/from China were rolled out close to 2 months ago, it was called an overreaction on Trump's part caused by xenophobia.

I liked one WaPo article that said the virus โ€œallegedlyโ€ surfaced in China. Thatโ€™s carrying some serious water for orange man bad.
