Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

Generally agree. But the last part, I think it is too early to tell. And because there is no vaccine to inhibit it, the unknown causes a lot of worry. In my own case, we have taken steps such that my parents limit public outings, including grocery shopping.

The US population over the age of 60, which is considered a bit higher risk, is 52 million. Let's round down to 50 million for ease of math.

If just twenty percent end up getting it this year, and let's say the death rate is 2 % (a bit lower than current rates, but justified by theoretically better treatment here), that yields:

50,000,000 X 20% = 10,000,000 with the virus.

Of which 200,000 would die. And that's simply deaths caused by this in the most at risk group. It does not count severe, debilitating illnesses in the same group, or younger people who are also at risk for various reasons.

That's just twenty percent getting it, which might be conservative if we don't take steps to contain and mitigate transmission where we can.
Add to that number the people with other traumas, like strokes, appendicitis, etc. who can’t be cared for adequately because the hospitals and medical professionals are overwhelmed by the crush of the serious and critical patients hospitalized because of this virus. (Shew, what a horribly long sentence!)

I’m not overplaying anything. Have I suggested anything radical? Moreover, preparing for what this can be has much less deadly consequences than downplaying it to any degree.

My point all along has been preparing for this thing at the expense we are paying in public panic and economic hits is not level with the actual threat.

Should certain precautions be taken? Absolutely. I’m limiting my time in large crowds and washing my hands more frequently.

Should we be shutting down businesses and quarantining whole towns and treating this like the next plague in the news? Nope. For the love of all holy the media has people out clearing shelves of toilet paper. It’s ridiculous.

I agree with some of what your saying. But who do you want the government taking suggestions from? They are advising these measures. The hoarding of TP is stupid. I hope our elected people are taking the advice of the CDC and WHO. Not one off doctors and non pros at this.

I really don’t get the hate directed at folks buying up toilet paper. It truly is something you don’t want to run out of. People are just looking at the possibilities of extended quarantines or supply chain issues limiting future accessibility.

Besides being on every preppers list of highly tradable commodities 🤣

You say this...

Then you post this link about not panicking.

Point #3 in the link lauds the "strong control and isolation measures imposed by China" that are "paying off."

China locked down 20 million people by the time they reached 18 fatalities, and you link an article that praises their actions.

People in the US have horded toilet paper, and you call that panic. That's a pretty hot take you got there.

What if those Chinese would have just said it was the flu, instead of putting the( pretty much unknown to most people), coronavirus label on it ?

You all know this virus is everywhere in the US now. If you are waiting for the news to slowly roll out each individual infection county by county hoping you have so far dodged a bullet telling yourself "well, there have been no confirmed cases in Knox County" then you are fooling yourself. This BS these counties are doing where they test 1 positive and go on the air saying "there has been no community spread" are full of shlt. They wouldn't know if there was community spread because they don't have enough tests to know. If you are waiting for someone to ring some proverbial bell to tell you "it's time" then DING DING!

For those of you in meltdown panic mode " the world is ending" To address your panic you could take a long walk into the woods and quietly take care of yourself. Problem solved.

I’m not afraid at all..... I will keep living my life just fine.

Global statistics are unreliable, including the US. No adequate testing, no adequate statistics. Who knows how this goes, I hope it’s as minor as you think.
I can tell you one thing, this is big enough that it is going to permanently change how we conduct healthcare, at least in this country.
Lmao no it’s not.
