Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

Interesting side note: Although Pence says that every American can be tested if a doctor signs off on it, Florida's Governor has announced that we will not follow that process here. The stated reason is that they are worried that the labs that can do them - there are 3 -- will be overwhelmed. So less people tested logically = more cases of infection as peopel do not know they are infected and think they have something else.

The cdc and health dept makes those decisions. Not the doctors or the VP

One thing that personally irritates me is that we booked flights for Italy back in October. Various airlines are proudly beating their chests that they will waive change or cancellation fees if you book between 3/5 and 3/28 for travel through September.

So, if you buy a ticket NOW knowing that the virus is an issue, and have to cancel , then you can get a refund. But if you booked before, when the virus didn't even exist, you are screwed.
Which airline? Delta waived change fees for any international ticket bought on or before March 1. So if you booked with them last October they would waive the fee.

If it's still a problem in September, just eat your loss and stay home. I get that it sucks, but better safe than sorry. We may fight over political stuff, and the gators suck, but I wouldn't want you to get sick.

In this case, it would be like a house catching fire in a remote area, and the fire department being able to build a pump station and plumb water lines from a city miles away.

Molecular testing requires the identification of proteins specific to a virus, then creation of antibodies that recognize the proteins, then linking the antibodies to an enzyme or other reagent for detection. By the way: that's kind of a difficult process. PCR is even crazier, requiring actual sequencing of the genetic code for identification.

I had no clue what it takes, but I was amazed they cranked something out as quickly as they did. I'm certainly a lot more impressed by the response than a lot of Trump's opposition seem to be.

Just got this email from Jetblue:

We also want to ensure you can book new travel with confidence. As such, we're extending our temporary policy of no change or cancellation fees. This applies to bookings made 3/6-3/31 for travel through 9/8/20 across all fares (Blue, Blue Basic, Blue Plus, Blue Extra and Mint) and all JetBlue destinations. If you need to cancel your travel plans, we'll credit the full amount as a JetBlue travel credit that's valid for one year. Fare differences may apply for changes. Please visit our blog for more info.

Ok, so new travel you can book with confidence. But that means you are booking with knowledge of the virus. I get it -- they are encouraging new bookings.

But does seem fundamentally unfair that you can book and roll the dice now; not so before.

I'd be lying if I said that I didn't enjoy the fact that instead of agreeing or simply moving on, your butthurt drove you to an attempt at condescension. I wear your disdain for me as a badge of honor.
Like i couldn't care less.

Bellingham Washington nurses had to sign a non-disclosure agreement about the virus.

They’ve been treating patients in isolation rooms there for a while now. Some medical staff have been ignoring the NDA with the belief that folks have a right to know of confirmed cases in their area hospitals.

Can't you switch destinations?

That’s odd. Seems like most states are trying to be transparent on the numbers tested even if no cases are confirmed.

I’ve been sitting on that info from family in Bellingham, but the cow left the barn when it got reported on the morning news.

It was a control the info and narrative move and I’ve been wondering how many other places have the same thing happening.

Sounds like overreaching by a west coast hospital admin. It’s already covered under HIPAA and nothing is wrong with putting isolation precautions on patients. Happens everyday
