Bench minutes in the second half

Every time we use our bench, we give away points and momentum. I will take my chances with the starters near the end of the game.

I agree at the end of the game, but they have to play in the second half. We can’t win consistently if our starters are dead.

Wrong. You must have missed the first half of the last several games. Im not talking about using them 10 minutes a half or at the end of the game but you have to give your starters a little bit of rest here and there.

You realize they gave away the auburn and UF leads with the starters? Apparently you don’t.

Gaines and Johnson player 4 minutes each.
Uros 3
ORN 2
most of all that was in the first half. And it’s the back ups that give away leads??? Man, you guys really don’t get it.

And let’s not forget that this 100% Barnes roster. We are 29 games in and he doesn’t have his back ups ready to contribute.

Let’s be real, this team’s issue is fatigue. They likely beat Auburn with fresher legs.

Different issues in auburn game. Subs played. 24 TOs was the biggest issue and fulky had a bad game.

Well at least we know now that we can finish no worse than .500 lol. Wish that we could shock the world and finish 18-13 but alas Kentucky has hit their stride and Auburn is tough as well. Only way we’d have a chance at this point though, but oh well. Split the last 2 games to be 17-14(9-9) and we are NIT bound IMO.

Not using our bench in the second half of games is killing us. Barnes is wearing his own players out. Fulkerson is gassed and missing free throws.
I think the fatigue caught up to them @AU and @Arky. That said, he doesn't have a lot of good options on the bench, right now. He pretty much has to ride or die with the starters if he can afford to.

Take one of those guys out and replace them with ON, Plavsic, or Pember, and then we get to hear all about why Barnes would insert those guys into the game when the starters were building such a lead. Gaines, and to an extent, Johnson, are the only guys off the bench worth a darn, right now. Not sure why Gaines played so little, today.

It kind of supports my point. James played terrible that game. He gets 40 minutes today. Barnes has a double standard. Jalen and Gaines have earned minutes. ORN has certainly earned more than two.

This is a very worthwhile conversation. All season, I have been worried about our lack of depth. Barnes seems scared to use the bench, outside of very small minutes (like today). Say what you will about Bruce Pearl but he's a good basketball coach and he knows how to use his bench. When he was our coach, he routinely had a rotation of 8 and even 9 guys. They went in and did their jobs. They produced off the bench...points, rebounds, and good defense.

If I'm Pearl gameplanning for us now, I'm licking my chops: run us to death and wear us down.

As I see it, it is Barnes's job to develop his bench...yesterday. We will never go far post-season without a solid bench playing meaningful minutes.

Agree about Pearl game planning to wear our starters out.
Only disagreement I would have about Pearl using his bench effectively would be the decision to give more minutes to his son than to Maymon.

I don't think it is Barnes' ideal gameplan to run our starters to death. He just realizes there is a significant talent gap and/or experience and readiness gap between the starters and the majority of th bench. He had typically played 8-9 guys with regularity.

We have more guys averaging double digit minutes this year than either of the previous two years, but we have 6 guys averaging over 29 mpg. Last year, we had 4. The year before, we had 0. He just can't trust much outside of the starters in crunch time, unfortunately.

Barnes can go easy on the starters in practice and wear them out in the games. They're young. They can handle it over the next 2, 3, hopefully 4 or 5 weeks. James has missed a lot due to injury, so he's been worked less. Vescovi has only been working this hard at this level for 2 months. Fulk, Bowden, and Pons have been getting conditioned for 3 or 4 years in the program. I like the philosophy. Cut back on the reserve rotation. Feature one or two subs per game and sit them down if they don't step up. Nothing to lose. A lot to gain. The freshmen have had a lot of work this year. They don't need it in every game. Maybe throw them into the fire at Rupp for the atmosphere, but go back to 35-40 minutes for each of the top 5 versus Auburn. Gaines is a bit of an offensive liability and can be exploited by opposing game planning. Maybe Johnson can add something. Ramble on.

Create a list of what went wrong which was out of the coaches control and I think you will feel a lot better about the results we see. If you do not feel better ... It will be because list was a total sham. I will feel really good when we close out SEC play at 9-9!
