Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

OK, so whether my kid gets sick with a potentially serious illness is a consequence of your irrational anti-government paranoia?

If there is a potentially serious illness floating around take precautions of your choosing with your kids, don't transfer the responsibility of being a parent to the government.

The position that the gov has always been altruistic and doing what's best for people is irrational. We have hundreds of studies to disprove that. Anyone who doesn't have a healthy distrust of the gov is eyes wide shut.

Better do something about it then.

I'd recommend they see how the communist states fare before voting for Bernie, though. I can't see Cuba, Venezuela, N Korea handling an outbreak very well ... and China started it all - obviously their attention to things like sanitation and human behavior are pretty suspect.

That is so completely asinine you can't have typed it with a straight face.
Your willingness to maintain a philosophy into the absurd only to avoid the uncomfortableness of admitting what everybody already knows, that there is always a line, is fascinating.

Quote from my Micro professor today about this. It will probably hurt our economy more than it will hurt us.

Don't suppose he had thoughts about driving a spike through the heart of vampire globalism, though. Like a firewall that keeps us from getting an economic cold when China or somebody else sneezes.

What does that have to do with the issue?
No one completely trusts the government.
I just trust the government more than some of my idiot neighbors and the guy who would do anything to make a buck.

It has lost its high infection and mortality rate once outside mainland China. It's going to slow track down. This won't be the pandemic people are predicting. JMO.
Yep...I did some quick math
In China 2,717 deaths 78,159 cases 3.47%
Rest of world 45 deaths 2,788 cases 1.6%

Luther you would celebrate tyranny if the tyrant had a D beside it's name.
Not in the least. But you being someone who can only deal with absolutes, I see how you have no alternative but to reach that conclusion.

If you enjoy action films and history you never knew, watch Red Sea Diving Resort. The movie is based on the Mossad operation to smuggle Ethiopian Jews out of Ethiopia before they were slaughtered by the new regime. It's a very good movie with abysmal critical ratings. Being deplorable and a heathen, I generally find the best movies are the ones the critics hate. With enough "what possessed you to get this piece of trash movie?' I even got my wife to realize movie critics are fools.
I watched that movie on my iPAD a few months ago. I’m a deplorable too!

If people break the law (which is what a mandatory quarantine would be), then they can be arrested.
Going to help your sick grandmother? Straight to jail, enjoy 5 to 10 for breaking the law.

Out of food and need to head to the store with no sign of infection, danger to the public, 5 to 10.

The greater good. (As from Hot Fuzz)

I don't think that translates well to this situation.

What the hell do you think mandatory quarantine looks like?
With the time line we are looking at for this there is no way the vast majority of people understand what they are asking for.

At least two weeks shut down? That's getting into loss of service territory. Cause the guys keeping the power on are gone. The pump workers are gone. It's a man made natural disaster across the entire country so that we arent going to be able to call for help from unaffected areas.

The shut downs in china are already going to hurt the economy for years as we adjust and the ripples play out.

And when they stay home and still get sick how do you feel? China has been shut down for weeks. Still getting new cases and deaths there.

The thing that bothers me is how differently this is being treated than the flu. Things like this are going on:

UT cancels study abroad trips to South Korea over growing coronavirus concerns

Overreaction? Possibly, but damned if this isn't being viewed by just about everyone; governments, WHO, CDC, as something different.

There's a significant downside for UT if they didn't. Sending a bunch of students for whom you are responsible into a place with a blossoming infection rate, and a place where you don't control the care, etc just doesn't sound very smart in a litigious environment where someone sues for any perceived slip in responsibility. I'm thinking the school is going to have a big problem if even one infected kid returns from spring break and infects others.

Being a responsible person/parent is not absurd. Relying on the .gov to take responsibility for you and yours is absurd.

The question is, are the new cases due to:

a) people having been asymptomatic for a period of time:
b) people having such mild symptoms for a period of time that they did not get tested until well into the illness;
c) recent infections.

And if c, is that due to having only recently come in contact with an infected person, or a long incubation period?

Trying to draw conclusions about new cases and when they began versus when they were detected is so flawed based on limited data right now that you risk attributing delay to the wrong thing.

The scientists are telling us this is going to get worse before it gets batter based on experience with many iterations of the flu. Trump is telling us this is already getting better because he is bothered that the stock market is going down right when he needs everyone to feel like the economy is doing so well.

Absolutely correct, they have no idea what they are asking for.

The people advocating we lock down people potentially infected or whole communities but would have been against doing so when HIV started spreading.

Sensationalism in the news media is growing worse by the day. We have new "storms of the century" almost daily, and set all time weather records (that were only a measurable quantity in maybe the last hundred years - sometimes far less) almost as frequently. The current "huge" storm running across the north is supposed to drop something like 6" ... wow. Tame the media and people might get smarter and more worldly again.
