Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

You're nuts.

No they can't be made to come to work but they can be fired for not coming to work. Could you imagine the lawsuits flying of people fired for not coming to work if it gets bad? LG would have to stop posting.

I can't imagine any lawsuits, at least in the right to work states. And the first healthy employee of mine that refuses to come to work will be out on their azz.

Again, the panic will do more harm to this country that the bug will.

Are you sure that slavery was banned? It sounded pretty grim for black folk in last night's debate.

Pretty sure. We only had one old slave cabin left on the farm and nobody lived in it. If it hadn't then we got robbed.

I watched the first 15-20 minutes last night and that was about all I could stand.

We had tons of controversy with GW/Gore and the hanging chads, but when 911 happened, most felt we were safe with GW as president and could trust him.

I am not a paranoid person, but I don't feel safe or feel like I can trust Trump in a crisis. He can't tell the truth, he believes conspiracy theories and puts yes men around him, because he can't stand criticism. I will say I do still have confidence that some of the Republicans will step up since Trump has the base thinking the Democrats and news organizations are evil villains.

Involuntary's suggestions are good ones.

LOL

Repeal the 19th amendment.

When did I say I wanted extreme measures?
I have said that I thought it was appropriate that people known to have the virus or to have been exposed to the various have a mandatory period of quarantine.
I think everyone agrees with that. Except for Hog - who says it shouldn't be mandatory, but that people who transmit the virus in public should be prosecuted. (we can discuss the lunacy of that position some other time)

Should we have done this when HIV first hit the scene?

What should be done is carefully screen people coming into the US and prepare for a reasonably poor scenario where there are particular communities that are unable to cope with a local outbreak. Its not just a question of funding, though that is part of it.

What I worry we are going to get is some kind of sci-fi fantasy nonsense from him about a vaccine that is just around the corner when in reality the experts say the ones under consideration right now are 12-18 months away, minimum.

You can be sensible about what you do. Stock up on foods that you normally eat, not so much as to prepare for shortages but to avoid placed where a lot of people gather. If you are older wear mask in public. If you are older, have younger family members run errands for you. Same precautions as with the flu.

Very underrated mindset. There is probably more practical use in the widespread idea of prophylactic "prepping" regarding this type of thing than TEOTWAWKI considerations.

So its okay for him to blame MSNBC for hyping it, but not okay to point out that his own response seems irresponsibly disconnected from reality?

Never said it was OK. Simply pointing out that politics may be the least of our worries if the U.S. must deal with a widespread outbreak of CV. I put more credence in the CDC & world health officials at this point. It appears that DT may very well be underestimating CV. He needs to address this, read my previous posts. At this point, I could also care less about the shoot from the hip tweets & disagreements our PREZ has with MSNBC. Is he disconnected from reality? Maybe or maybe not but I trust my gut feelings & own intuitions in dealing with emergency preparedness over the advice from any political leader in Washington regardless of party. I could simply just say Trump sucks & all problems are solved without any strategy towards finding a solution.

I cited Trump's tweet with MSNBC as an example of his minimizing the possible effects of CV. Once again, his own ego is so fragile that to him it has become whether he feels personally insulted versus how to actually deal with the problem. The speech tonight is not about calming fears because they are disproportionate to reality. Rather, he is worried solely about the secondary effects of CV to his own image. The parallells to the Emperor Has No Clothes is remarkable.

This thing is overrated and will turn into a big nothing burger that screws with the stock market a little.

Roughly 80,000 people per year die from the flu in the US alone. This won't touch that total. US infections won't touch that number.

I sincerely hope you are right. I guess what has me a bit concerned is the reaction of so many governments and institutions around the world seems so extreme that I wonder if this is more dangerous, or is thought to be potentially more dangerous, than we have so far been led to believe.

Could greed be pushing you to not want to close down for two weeks compared to your workforce all getting this stuff??

They are reacting to the public panic. They want to be seen doing "something".

I really hope you're correct.

You may very well be right. I am interested in the details of his speech and the administrations plans moving forward.

Someone will be working and providing services to our customers if we are not. Call that greed if you want but protecting my business and the paychecks of our employees is top priority. How many people do you know that are 2 paychecks away from losing their azz?

The thing that bothers me is how differently this is being treated than the flu. Things like this are going on:

UT cancels study abroad trips to South Korea over growing coronavirus concerns

Overreaction? Possibly, but damned if this isn't being viewed by just about everyone; governments, WHO, CDC, as something different.
