So what would you do?
This could be a really big deal very quickly, should we not make an investment in researching and be ready to preemptively control the situation if a hot spot does flare here?
Should he further panic the market by speculating like many of us the cataclysmic scenario that could occur but has no present indicators that it will here
Or maybe he shouldn’t bring the legislators into the circle of decision making
If Trump switch party’s this afternoon there’d be a boatload more Republicans tomorrow

That made me think of this little Chad Mitchell Trio ditty:

The question is, are the Africans and Africa prepared for independence?

Are they smart enough to know enough to regulate their taxes so the poor

Or employ enough machines to keep employees from employment?
Have the natives the intelligence, the native wisdom, or the dexterity

In essence, have we morally the right to even plan to let the backward
Nations join the brotherhood of men?

I tend to have this apparently perverted look at things ... that it's not about production for consumption we should be concerned about, but employment so that employee consumption can keep industry in business. Automation and outsourcing to third world countries (and all things considered, I squarely put China in that basket) are a threat to what the Industrial Revolution made possible.

You would hope so, but don't count on it. Greed overrules competence at the top of the corporate food chain pretty much every day. As long as bean counters rule, we are screwed.

Me either, but he's most likely counting on a big government check to refine his numbers, so he can tell us how hard the sky is going to fall ... and for all his Haavaard buddies to come up with "solutions".

He should say he and his administration are monitoring the situation closely and will respond as needs arise. That's it. As others have pointed out, the problem is that Trump is now seen as such a liar that anything he says intended to be encouraging is seen as just another lie by him. Its the obverse of the Boy who Cried Wolf syndrome -- his reassurances just lead to suspicion that its worse than reported.

I wonder why that is happening, honestly. I mean, if its just another version of the flu, even a highly contagious one, that doesn't seem reason to shut a country down. I worry that it is in fact much worse than is currently being revealed. Seems like it would be tough to keep a lid on it this long if it were.

Seems impossible to keep a lid on it. Too many Americans have business contacts in China. Seems impossible to keep secrets in the current world.

Just read a news story from our local news saying the cdc has issued a warning for Americans to be prepared for outbreaks here. People in the comments are freaking out.

Hard to say what the kill rate is. It's a slow-moving virus (from onset to death), so many of those infected currently may end up dying. On the other hand, many of those infected recover quickly, so many cases are probably not being reported

I’m no scientist or mathematician, but ...
Ordinary flu has a kill rate of about .1%,
This thing is running at about 2-2.5-3% kill rate.

That’s 25-30 TIMES more deadly than regular flu - and it seems to have roughly the same contagious spread like flu or a cold.
That runs through a population of 100,000 or 1million its gonna kill a pretty large number of folks.

So, way deadlier than the “regular” flu, and spreads way quicker than something like SARS or Ebola.

I think that is the reason behind the concern.
