OWH's Topic That Will Never Die XXIII

Morning. Red skies when the dawn broke, we know what that means!
Red skies in the morning, sailors fair warning
Red skies at night, sailor's delight

??
I always hear my grandmother's voice: Red sky at morning, sailor's warning. Red sky at night, sailor's delight.

Wish I could hear it now. She's still with us, but not like she was.

My grandmother has always talked so fast, it's hilarious to have a conversation with her. And not everyone can understand her. Some of us have to translate for the others. We call it Aganese (her name is Agnes.) She also had a saying for everything!!

10 or so years ago, at one of her birthday lunches (we probably had about 20 people there) we were done eating and my uncle (that still lives at home taking care of her - GOD LOVE HIM!!!) said, "Did you get enough to eat?" And she said......

Grandma: I had sufficient.
Me: You went fishin'?
Grandma: I had plenty.
Me: You caught 20??
Grandma: Poor old soul.
Me: And you lost you pole.

She and I looked at each other and both busted out laughing. Nobody else at the table had a clue what was going on, and to this day I don't know how I remembered that saying. lol

That's hilarious!

My grandmother was a Mississippi country girl born in 1897, and she never swore in her life. The closest she would ever come was to say, "Well, I swan!" And she had to be pretty riled up or astounded to say that!

Grandma had two sisters. They didn't always get along when they were little.

Grandma could whistle loud enough to stop traffic. It's crazy how loud she can whistle! My mom was in school and they sold potato chips door to door. She was about 3 miles away with her friend, and Grandma called her home by whistling.

Anyway, Grandma and her oldest sister were at the dinner table, don't know the exact ages but middle school age maybe? And Grandma took something off her sister's plate, so she stabbed Grandma's arm with her fork. Grandma grabbed her by the hair of the head and whistled in her ear.

I am sitting at my desk CRYING laughing as I write this! Hearing the two tell the story as sweet little old ladies in their 70's is one of my favorite family moments ever!!

Our church has an award for kids who memorize bible verses, and it's named after Grandma. She could quote passages of scripture like no one you've ever heard. Crazy! And she also would cuss like a sailor when she got really mad. LOL I've never heard it, but my mom and uncles have talked about it.
