Eric Gray for Heisman?

Over the past decade, QBs have been the winner of the Heisman with a couple of RBs (Henry & Ingram) sprinkled in. So, in order for EG to win, the past decade has shown the winner needs to be on a Naty contender. Manziel & Lamar Jackson would be the only exceptions of guys who weren’t on contenders. I don’t see that happening in 2020 for UT. We appear to be an 8-4 or 9-3 type of team IMO.

But of course when the best QB in our history was in the running they gave it to a defensive back.

-Over 75% of his yards came in 3 games.
-28% of his yards came on 2 RUNS
-409yards in 3 games (BYU, Vandy, Indy)...130 yards on 45 carries (2.9 ypc) in the other 10
-5 games in which he averaged less than 2.5 yards per carry

Look, when you throw in the Vandy game, his numbers look pretty good for a freshman who got limited carries. But that game was an extreme outlier and it completely mischaracterized the totality of his season. Had 246 yards averaging 9.8 yards and had 3 touchdowns in that one game....rest of the year, in the other 12 games, had 293 yards (24 yards per game) and 1 touchdown, averaged 3.8 yards per carry, including 5 games where he had less than 10 yards rushing per game.

He has potential to be a good running back, he flashed here and there, in about 3-4 games, and with the big Vandy game he wound up with decent numbers in his freshman year. Much room for improvement going forward, which starts in the weight room and getting much stronger.

Whew! There for a minute I thought VN was going to let me down.

With the way that Eric Gray finished this season, and with our Trey Smith returning and the addition of Cade Mays, I don't see why we shouldn't consider Eric Gray as a dark horse candidate for the Heisman next year. Things are lining up for him to have a huge year next season!
1. Vols never had a HW
2. It's hard for a RB to win it
3. Just no it'll never happen.

LULZ

Heisman candidates also have to have a great team to get the national spot light on them.

So we’ll need big time team success first. Maybe even playoff quality. Though I think we’re gonna be improved, that’s a REALLY big step.

Go watch Lewis's highlights and get back to me. Gray made a couple of good cuts and outran a slow defense. Lewis was mauling full grown men.

If our schrdule is
thru the year
vs Vanderbil
vs Indiana
vs Vanderbilt
vs Indiana
etc, etc, eic..
problem is
Oklahoma
UGA
UF
Alabama
see JP using multiple backs
no back will rise above others
maybe 3 different backs leading rusher in at least 1 game.
Which is a good thing

He’s no heisman candidate for sure. But do a lot of sec backs have 90+ yard td runs?
No, but they would if they’d have been given the same opportunity that he did. Chandler would’ve made that exact same run had he been in the game at that time, only he would’ve done a little quicker since he’s clearly a bit faster.

As far as how many other sec backs could’ve done what Gray did last year....how many other sec backs do you think could’ve run for 96 yards on their other 23 carries outside of the 2 long TD runs he had, untouched, vs lowly Vandy? Or, how about how many other sec backs do you think could’ve run for a combined 40 yards on 16 carries in 2 games vs UTC and UAB? Or averaged less than 3 yards a carry in 10 of their 13 games last year?

Is he a good young promising player with good potential to be a good, productive running back at Tennessee? Absolutely. But is he some kind of generational running back along the lines of Webb or Lewis or Henry or Stephens who at any point is gonna be worthy of heisman trophy consideration like so many others in this thread are now saying or suggesting....based off of literally 2 long touchdown runs vs the worst defense we played last year where literally nobody laid a hand on him? No.

Do what? He’s a nice little player, but he ain’t sniffing any Heisman hype at Tennessee. It’s become strictly a QB award anyway.

When I look at Gray, I see a kid who can make plays in space. He's got wiggle and speed. He's more a hybrid WR type. A "scatback" if you will. More of the type you'd see running the ball for Leach or one of the west coast programs like Oregon.

When I look at a kid like Clemson's Etienne, I see a running back. This is a guy you can hand the ball to when you need that tough yardage. He kind of reminds me of Emmitt Smith.

We have backs on the roster, but we don't yet have that sort of RB....a real stud at the position. We've had plenty of those type players in our history. Hoping we've found that with Hodges or maybe turn back to Crouch/Banks for a solution. Then again, the game has changed. It's more 5 wide and getting guys like Gray out in space. Showing my old age I guess.

Amen. I see the same thing.

That player is not on our team. We need an elite back bad.

He may have a huge season in 2020 if he's lucky but he's not ready to be that good yet.

That is like a lottery player stating the next Powerball ticket he buys is going to be the jackpot winner.

Why would you want to stain Eric Gray’s good name with a Heisman? That award has zero credibility.
