Best current options to score:
1) Vescovi for 3
2) Fulkerson posting up
3) James for 3
4) Pons posting up
5) Pons for 3
6) Johnson for 3
7) Bowden for 3
The sad part is that beginning the year our best options were Bowden and Turner. Barnes should get Vescovi about 10 shots from deep every game.
What amazes me is how good Vescovi looks. In spite of the turnovers, he really brings a spark to the team when he is out there. It really felt like our scoring droughts happened while he was on the bench.
4. Honestly, the only player I can't really complain about, right now, is Fulkerson.
Bowden shot 1-17.
Pons shot 0-7.
Vescovi had 7 TOs.
Nkamhoua and Pember cannot defend or rebound effectively despite their size.
Fulk had a double-double, 15/10, hit all 5 of his FTs, and only committed 2 TOs and 3 fouls in 37 minutes.
5. We have seemingly lucked out by Vandy missing Nesmith. @UGA and then @Vandy was gonna be crucial to split. I feel better about our chances of doing that, but we have to be a better disciplined offensive team moving forward. Performances like today are inexcusable.
Everyone is allowed an off-night once in a while.
NCAA bid is certainly within reason. We're 10-5, 2-1. If we go 9-9 in league play, we'll get NCAA bid. Never seen such a weak field. Some of the very best teams are losing games they normally wouldn't lose.5 of 9 players in the rotation are freshmen. Hopefully they'll be playing like 5 sophomores before February ends. Making the NIT Final Four would be a great finish.
JJJ may not be filling up the scoring column, but he's pretty solid (except for a couple of really bad TOs).
I don't think that you sit Bowden. He just needs to take about 10 fewer shots per game.
Last game he had 11, LSU game he had 18 points. He's fine, and he still played elite defense.I'm disappointed in Pons. Early in the season he looked like he had taken a big step offensively and found a shot, but now his shot looks as ugly ever. I mean I guess it still looks better form-wise but he's not hitting them.
The team we saw yesterday and far too much recently will be lucky to win 5 more SEC games. Shooting 25% and having more TOs than assists is a death sentence against most of D1 basketball.NCAA bid is certainly within reason. We're 10-5, 2-1. If we go 9-9 in league play, we'll get NCAA bid. Never seen such a weak field. Some of the very best teams are losing games they normally wouldn't lose.
We have talent, young talent that needs development. We also need JB to snap out of it. Just win ugly now and get better. About the only thing I can truly agree with in this thread is that it is hard to watch. They're are a lot of things we need to do differently to fix our putrid offense.
1. We have to score in transition. Trying to score against a set defense is just not our forte. We have the athletes to get out and run. We have to do it more.
2. Continue to get to the foul line. If we aren't shooting at least 15 FTs a game, we aren't going to win. South Carolina really bailed us out time and again yesterday.
3. Stop settling for 3s. We just aren't a great 3 point shooting team. We should be doing more pin down screens for Bowden for midrange jumpers. Pons in the post or midrange is way more effective than Pons for 3. Vescovi and possibly James should continue to take them, and if someone is open you continue to take it as well, but stop forcing it.
4. We just have to be better at finishing around the rim. All of our guards are below average at best at finishing inside. Turner was easily the best on the team at that. We have to get better there, but you have to continue to attack as well. If you get in the paint, you will continue to get free throw shots as well.
5. Lastly, stop turning it over. You can't shoot if you don't have the ball.
I think before the season if you had told me that Turner retires, Bowden shoots, less than 20 percent from 3, and Fulkerson was our best player, I would've said we weren't winning more than 4 sec games. We're still fighting and clawing despite having just less talent than most teams.
