Pro Football Focus not impressed with our OL play this year

I’m hoping that the remaining recruits will be O-linemen, edge rushers, and a punter. We need more consistency and depth at each of these positions if we want to compete with the big boys. Also, if Trey goes pro...we absolutely have to get another stud or two on the O line.

So I wonder where we graded out before this season because we were tremendously better this year.

So UK OL gets graded real high. They let a DL beat them buy their running QB (WR) juke's said DL and runs for 1st down.
great rush yards & run Blockingo_O
Our QB holds on to the ball over the standard 2.7 seconds gets sacked. OL graded bad pass protection and sack counts against rushing total.
OL gets bad grade on pass protection and loss of yards hurts total rush yards ergo run blocking.
Very subjective.

We weren't great but also not nearly as bad as this site "observed" either.

I don't think I care a lot about this stat at the moment. LSU is 30th on the list and they ripped everyone they played a new one except for Bama and Auburn.

I think this throws out the improvement in the line. Maybe they only watched the first half of our season when JG was running for his life and made their decision but anyone who watched the second half of the season and the improvement at line should have been impressed. I would, based on the entire body of work, put our line in at least the top 50 and probably middle of the SEC over Ole Miss, State, South Carolina, Kentucky, Vandy and even A&M (their offensive line was their big weakness). Hopefully we are just a few years away from the big uglies like Georgia and Bama have.
I hope their stats include the entire season, and good and the bad-otherwise, they are just trash.

Our OL was not good this year. There were moments when things clicked, but not consistent enough to compete with the big boys. Hopefully experience and another year in the weight room will lead to improvement. They were young, so no reason to think they can't get better.
Yes sir! Next season-that's the ticket, I'm smelling a NATY.

Thanks for the input and conversation.

That Red Sox had a super high payroll but their analytical models showed they needed guys who worked counts more (reason they signed Johnny Damon and took a flier on David Ortiz), better defense (Orlando Cabrera trade) and a better bullpen. They had talent and money but it wasn’t just the talent, they changed how their organization works.

If you question analytics then I would venture to look at the Houston Astros (who literally built their baseball department around analytics, science, and data) and the Golden State Warriors, who were a good team before changing the way they play and bringing in a coach who knew how valuable 3’s were. Or the Chicago Cubs, who used science/modern scouting analytics to break a so called curse.

Also, PFF has JG in the 80’s this year with his performance. So I’m not sure where you’re thinking he was higher ranked this year.

Preseason 21. That's what your link said. Post season, in the 80s. Tano struggled badly this year, and PFF reflects that in final rankings. You didn't make a great case right there.
JG was hyped in the preseason by PFF and they listed him only behind Tua. The whole thing is flawed, because while JG completion % looked really nice he hardly had any production

He hardly had any production according to a keyboard warrior like yourself. Clarify that part.

Last year he threw for 12 TD's, this year he threw for 16. That's not much production, last year he averaged 158 YPG and this year he averaged 166 YPG so again thats not much production

He also hardly threw the ball. But it's not worth getting into again. The point is, PFF is probably a better source for evaluating talent than a rando on the internet.

JG simply isnt a good QB. Get over it.

HE THREW 3 PICKS IN A ROW IN THE BOWL GAME. Was late and missed 2 TDs in the 1st half. Was called out on all of those by a former NFL QB. Tough kid. Not an SEC passer. He just isnt. 16 TDs in 13 freaking games is terrible production. Terrible. Quit making excuses for a 22 year old. Wake up and quit lying to yourself. Wow.

Kentucky was running all over everybody with zero passing threat.

We beat 'em head to head and they ended up twith he same record as we had. Were they better than LSU's OL? They weren't even asked to pass block hardly. C'mon man, 5th in the country? Again, IMO this is bunk.

We beat Kentucky because that is what we are supposed to do. Besides that though the fact that teams stacked the box against them knowing what they were doing and couldn't stop them. That's impressive and a sign of great development of lineman. You have to give them that.

Run blocking was often very mediocre, but pass protection was very good overall. JG holds the ball until the one receiver he is tracking is wide open, then waits a half second after that then throws. He usually had a lot of time, however.

Imo run blocking suffered because when jg played, most of the time we were playing against a stacked line from the defense. I believe with a good qb, the run lanes will open up.
