Doug Dickey's playoff expansion recommendation article with 247 is linked below:

Doug Dickey on state of Vols, fixing College Football Playoff

Dickey says that the 4 team playoff hurts teams like TN because all the elite players want to play in the playoffs. Therefore, most of the 5 star recruits end up at 5 or 6 schools that are usually contenders for the playoffs. It causes what we are seeing now with the big disparity between the elite teams and everyone else.

His recommendation is a 12 team playoff setup where the top 4 teams get a round 1 bye. Teams 9, 10, 11, and 12 would play at the home field of teams 5, 6, 7 and 8 in round 1 the week after conference championship games. The 4 winners of round 1 would then play the top 4 in traditional early bowl games in the quarter finals .. and the semis and championship games could remain similar to the current setup.

I like his idea on the playoffs and would love to see it implemented.
This is what some of us keep saying. This PO system is hurting all except 4 to 6 teams and will continue to create only a few excellent teams that beat up on everyone else until they get to the PO. Now if your goal is to watch 1 or 2 great games at the end of the season you got it.

I said that's what made it possible for me to get past my hate.
I did NOT question anyone's fandom.

Matter of fact, I don't recall questioning anyone as to why they didn't pull against the same team I did? Seems to me, I was answering someone that did.

And ftr, yeah, I would rather it not been them 2 also. But it was.
Whoa.... I was just saying how I used the same logic to get to the point where I could cheer for Clemson 🤮 and keep my fandom. With the choices it's hard to choose. OSU...hate, CU...recruiting, OU...gets in by running up the score on weak teams, LSU...EO and how he tried to hurt TN even more after what LK did.

We have confirmation Lyle said this?

The way I have always heard the story is that Butch had Bob Welton tell the family TL didn’t really fit what they were doing. There was probably an offer extended at some point that shows up on 247, but you know how those can go.

Yeah CU seems to play off the charts at the right times. It's nuts. Their WRs were making silly, once a year, type plays the last few playoffs. This game it was nothing special, but I wouldn't be surprised if all the BS shows out vs LSU.

I swear they cheat to play up to, and above, in the trenches and on the outside, to much much better recruited teams, year after year. Don't want to believe it, but it's hard to make sense. Their DBs look ridiculous athletically, speed, strength, and they merely recruit top-15...???

Recruiting analytics don’t always tell the tale. Continuity of coaching staff and having two bona fide elite QB’s in Watson and Lawrence can make up for an otherwise top 15 roster. Hoping that’s what Harrison Bailey brings to the table for us. They weren’t nearly as much of a threat when Kelly Bryant was running the show.

it really is about the QB and a good defense

@HankHill does Joe Brady get a shot in the NFL ?

I’d be amazed if no one offered him an OC position. Might be a good idea for whoever drafts Burrow.

Looking to @Atlanta VOL for more info but have heard USC has contacted Neids about their open TE position.

I don’t think they can pull him away from here.

He wouldn’t have to do much actual coaching at USC given how little Graham Harrell uses TE’s.

I’m just not sure kids are going to start picking UCF and schools like that all of a sudden because of an expanded bracket.
Not all of a sudden. It will be gradual that they start looking at other teams. Now, they think which team can I go to that guarantees I can make the PO 2 of my 3 years. Not many. This will only get worse. Just think how shocking it was to not have AL in the PO this year. (And you know UCF was a bad example lol.)

I would not hate a 12 team like that, but I just want at least an 8 team playoff.

I get it, just clarifying to everyone.
I never thought about who anyone else wanted to win. DV asked how the rest of us could choose a team as hated as OSU. And I hate their fans with a passion.

But for me *personally, thought Clemson being "out of sight, less in mind" was a little better for TN.

If Urban had still been there, not sure I could've even made a choice.

Understand! Had to hope LSU could win because OU could not beat Clemson. At least FL, AL, and GA were not in.

Updated your post

I am still trying to figure out how that was not a catch and fumble. I didn’t really care who won last night but OSU got hosed on some calls. I hope LSU crushes Clemson.
The ruling on the fumble was stupid. The guy caught the ball, took three steps, and had it knocked out of his hands. How is that not a fumble?

seriously how can 3 and a half steps not be a football move, clearly the powers that be wanted Clemson LSU... hate OSU but they got hosed on that call plain as day

Yes, it is.

Clemson managed just enough of that to beat OSU last night. TL used a less noticed part of his game, running, to lay it all out on the line to win and take some wicked hits. The rest of the team responded despite OSU being better on the lines on both sides of the ball. Venables cobbled together enough adjustments to slow OSU down. LSU did enough with it to turn theirs into a snoozer in the first 20 minutes of the game with both a future NFL franchise QB and quality D. They got to coast through the rest of the game as a result.

Our D is being built to compete as well as any of the above. It's now all about the QB, which is HB. IMO we have the coaches who are as competent as the ones above. So it is just a matter of time to be on the big stage. Hopefully by 2021 or 2022.

Quit making excuses and beat the competition. If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. This whole idea that other schools can’t catch up because of this playoff system is weak. LSU found a way. Tennessee needs to find a way.

USC is a massive sh!t show at the moment and Helton won’t last much longer.
If we thought the UT boards were nasty leading up to Butch's firing, you should see the USC ones. They are in full-on revolt and have been since Helton was kept by the AD. Those people want everyone gone.

The guy they bring on when a call is under review made no sense. He basically said that it looked like a fumble on the review, but in game speed, it didn’t. Therefore it wasn’t a fumble. That defeats the entire purpose of having replay.
