My take...

Gaines needs more mins at PG.
Bowden needs a step-back and a cross-over to get open on the 3pt line.

Gaines isn't a point guard or a center. He's a 2/3 and maybe not capable to play the 4 either until he adds 15-20 pounds of muscle. Basically, he's a wing.

Somebody has to spell Turner. The Turner playing 40 minutes a game experiment is not working. Gaines has shown as good a handle as anyone else so why not him?

I notice a lot of mentions of Turner to the two, but with the way his shot is he brings no advantage there either. The point of Vescovi is so you can sit Turner when he is killing you and forcing things. The hope is that with Vescovi we will not be playing 4 on 5 or 4 on 6 like we are doing when LT has his bad days.

They were without their best 2 players. And they played a terrible game also. And my observation isn’t based off this one game. I watched 3 games so far this year. And seen highlights and read about the others.
Another imposter. It's obvious you're a Memphis apologist.

This is a guard oriented team, no choice. If the guards are inconsistent then the team will be the same. Backline can play defense but the guards need to score. Pons on the 3 point line with 1 defender under the basket, everyone else down court, and he shoots the 3 and misses. He needs to be told to take it to the hole every time he gets his hands on the ball. If the guards had hit just average percentage from 3 tonight we win by 10.

need two pieces...Plav and Vescovi...

GO BIG ORANGE!

I wouldn't expect much from Plavsic this year even if he becomes eligible. But he'll be a sophomore next year whether he see's the floor or not. And it would be nice to have him as a rim protector and have the 5 additional fouls to give in the paint.

To be fair I did not see the Memphis game. I couldn't get out of a function I had to attend. I listened to as much of it as I could during my drive.

My impressions are not just based on this game but what I've seen to this point in the season.

First, Coach Barnes is getting every ounce of potential out of this team as a whole. The makeup of UT to this point hasn't been one that can just reload after losing 2 players early to the NBA. This appears to be a team that is going to have to continue to get better because of youth and a lack of a first option. Basically we have a gritty team and not a smooth or high octane one. I will be very surprised if that changes this year.

I am really surprised at the unorthodoxed makeup of this roster. Part of it are the transfers and the other part is what I mentioned earlier - early losses to the NBA. Our depth down low and at PG are paper thin. No size at all with Plasic ineligible. Lose Kent's height but he was irrelevant in the post. Then Burns transferred. I think most of us felt going into the off season last year he would be important.

Then we got too many guys that play the 3 and 4 position but none of them are consistent - Gaines, Pember, Pons, Fulkerson and Johnson. At least Gaines and Pember have excuses.

The guard position is another paper thin area with the PG transfer from Oregon sitting out. James is still young but unfortunately because how bereft of offensive firepower across the board we need his immediate help. This takes us to Bowden and Turner.

This is the same pattern we've seen from these two their whole careers. They struggle for chunks of the season only they do not have Bone, Schofield, Willams and even a rim protector like Alexander to cover for them. I really thought these guys were past this after they got going late in the season. Let's face it, if they don't score we probably don't win. They are that important and that's scary.

I mentioned the other day, Vescovi will be needed immediately and I think that is more obvious now after scoring 47 points in this game. I think he is even more important than a post player because this team is scrappy and plays hard. What they need is a reliable ballhandler to take the pressure off Turner. Turner is garbage on offense when he has to run the point. Play him with Vescovi and he can play the 2 guard which he is more comfortable and more effective playing. He is at point out of need and that would be his position if he plays pro ball somewhere including Europe. With a little luck, Vescovi is as sound fundamentally as he appears.

Go Vols!
Sound.

Despite the score and the FG percentages, I thought that it was a pretty entertaining game. IIRC the biggest lead that Memphis had was 4 and TN's was 17 to 5. It wasn't simply both teams jacking up terrible shots... both teams busted their tails playing high intensity defense for 40 minutes. Other than Memphis having a couple of easy put backs there really weren't many garbage baskets made by either side. I did think that there was too much dribbling instead of passing in the 2nd half of the opening period forward, but it was being dictated by the defense.

I'm a Vol realist.

Memphis beat us with 4 Freshmen, 3 of which are not regular starters, and a Senior who does not regularly start.

They beat us in the most hostile arena in basketball, except MAYBE Duke.

We got beat by an elite team's bench. They are going to be scary when they get their starters back on the court.

This team definitely was not ready to lose Bone early to draft. We knew we would lose Grant but Bone leaving has hurt even worse. This year has always been about growing the young players to do with next year class in which Tn will be a preseason top 5 team.

108 decibels when Penny appeared...yes, I believe that.
How about for the 40 minutes of actual play? I know that nothing is going to change any time soon with the seating assignment, but having the students locked in at one end and all the good sideline seating occupied by grandfathered ticket-holders and a generally-older crowd does not lead to a terribly hostile environment.

The offense didn't give the crowd much to yell about yesterday, but fans should get loud for the defense, as well. With such close proximity, they really can disrupt the opposition.

Way over ranked. Memphis was garbage, problem was we were even worse. Memphis will get better when they get Wiseman and Quinones back, UT on the other hand will be a roller coaster team based on how Bowden and Turner play
I went to the game and I totally agree. Memphis was terrible. Problem I saw was way too many missed easy shots. It's bad when one of your star players is having a bad day, but when everyone has a bad day (except for fulky I think who did a good job), you're not likely to beat any team. Chalk it up to a bad day for the team and move on to the next one. We have talent, the shots just didn't seem to go right for us in this game.

I agree.

As a "memphunteer" who watches them regularly, this was easily the worst showing Memphis has had since before the conference games last year.

🙄 if we shoot 30% we win that game by 15+. Memphis is not good at all
