Yves “The Air Up There” Pons

I love Turner, Bowden and Fulk........but right now Pons is the best player on the team.

He has been consistent through every game (so far). He plays good D, scores, rebounds, blocks, and doesn’t turn it over a ton (tied for least of the starting players).

Pons is most improved. Bowden is best IMO.

I love Pons, but he is not the best. Bowden and Turner are 1a and 1b. One could make an argument that Fulk is 3, but I'm not going to be the one.

I think people may be misunderstanding me.

In no way do I think Pons is the best player on the team. I think Bowden is the best. I think Turner and then Fulk fall right behind.....but both of those are the most “needed” players.

In my opinion of the 4 games and the exhibition Pons was the best and most consistent player for Tennessee in the combination of games.

wouldn't want to try to win with just Pons...that's why it's called a "team"...:D

Well, if there is a misunderstanding, it probably stems from you literally saying that Pons was the best player on the team, right now.

And I stand by that.

Who do you or others think has been the best through 4/5 games?

Again I’m not saying he “is” the best player; however to me he has been through the games played this season........thus right now he has played the best to me.

Prob could have clarified as “played the best” I guess....but nevertheless to me he has been the best player though 4/5 games.

I think Pons & Fulky have improved the most. With that being said, I see great improvement throughout the entire team. Turner had to transition to the point, and that’s not an easy task. Kudos to our players and entire coaching Staff!

Best all around player is hard to argue.

Just messing with you.

I think it's been Bowden, honestly. Bowden is infinitely better at creating his own shot, which there was a time in his career I'd have been shocked to type out the words "Bowden creating his own shot" in succession.

Pons has been a spot up shooter on the perimeter and a fortunate beneficiary inside. He has created on a few occasions, but most of his buckets have come on spot up 3s, open 15-foot midrange shots, and then dunks and putbacks. I can probably count on one hand the number of times he's taken anyone off the dribble and created. That isn't a knock on him, necessarily. If anything, it illustrates an area where he can still further improve.

Both have been equally effective defensively, too. Pons' effectiveness has come in the form of blocked shots while Bowden's has come on steals.

Rebounding is fairly even considering their positions. Pons could truthfully grab another couple boards a game given his athleticism and leaping ability, but he is still learning how to be a PF, right now, and what all that entails.

Shooting percentages are both astronomical, but Bowden has maintained it on more shots. One area of improvement that I haven't seen mentioned for Pons is in his FT shooting. He is a career sub-50% FT shooter, but is currently 6-7 on the season.

I totally agree about Bowden creating his own shot. He can make something out of nothing and it’s usually a good shot (or one you “should” take).

Also I didn’t know this until maybe a couple weeks ago; Bowden is one of the best spot up shooters in the nation.

Combine that with what “we” see and think (he creates a good shot) he has to be one of the best overall shooters in the nation (I know his %’s are good, but even beyond the numbers).

What a great debate to have, which Vol has been the best/MVP so far. I know I’m not involved in the discussion if we’re 1-3 or 2-2 right now. Also, I added the MVP because when thinking about best that just comes to mind. Bowden is a very close 2 for me, but the defensive presence can but subbed for at times, I can’t see that as much for Pons.

Agree Pons should be grabbing a few more boards than he has so far though.
