BTO’s Murray State postgame report

Kent stroked a beauty up top. Then forced one from the corner. The best part of his game is stepping out beyond the 3PL. He's needed to mix it up in the paint defensively. That will take some time to develop.
He really did hustle hard while he was in. His shooting ability and size inside will make him a contributor. I appreciated his effort last night.

In the first half I was thinking, well maybe next year. In the second I was thinking we gonna whoop everybody. JJJ is kinda like Pons last yr. His shot just doesn't look good; but I can see he is a stat stuffer. In fact he reminds me of Tyler Smith..............stat stuffer and similar body type. One good thing about JJJ is he will be around for more than one year.
I think JJJ looks smooth. He's just finding his way after not practicing and being new to the college game.

Johnson played quite a bit in the 2nd half. He was working really hard defending the perimeter. Had at least one big 3 to keep MS from running away in the 1st half.

It appeared that he can use either hand pretty well dribbling and passing. Had several nice open looks around the high post but they rimmed out. Needs some confidence shooting. I think his shot looked better than Pons'. He's not piling up stats but looks like he knows the game well. Learning the Deacon's system won't happen quickly. He could be a difference maker in the post season tourneys.

Turner’s vision and passing was on another level. He was in the zone.

I still think Pon’s level of production is entirely unsustainable and he will revert to some kind of mean. Be interesting to see what that mean is though. Really played way above my expectations.

Kent still looks really bad to me. Maybe he can get it together. There was a sequence where he had the moving screen and then back on defense he chose a really bad position in post defense that should have led to an easy bucket but their center just missed the shot. It feels like consistently he makes mental errors.

Not surprised by Bowden. This is what I expected. It’s been pretty clear for a while he is a very good player and really just needed the opportunity and willingness to step up.

We need another scoring threat. Maybe it can be O(R)N. I agree, I doubt that Pons keeps it up... however he looks better out top rather than on the side.

I just don’t understand this mindset. Everyone knows what we lost from last year. The returning players are transitioning from role players to featured players. We’ve got 4 freshmen and 2 returning guys who didn’t play any meaningful minutes last year. We’ve got a 5* freshman who’s not become comfortable enough yet to produce at his talent level. If you’re saying the way the team looks in the first week of the season won’t make the tourney then maybe you’re right. Barring injuries, I don’t see any chance of CRB not getting these guys to mesh together into a highly competitive group before March.

I agree with everything you say but my thinking is with the schedule coming up I don’t think we are going to win a number of these higher profile games. Then even if we are right and they mesh and are highly competitive come March I think we will be at or just over 500 in Sec play. That puts us right on the bubble

A lot of times the call does look ticky tack but he isn't straight up with both hands. One foul last night he had one hand up and the other in the guys back. That foul is gonna get called even if the offensive guy initiates the contact. And other time he had both hands up but was leaned over just slightly. He's so close to being a really good defender and staying out of foul trouble if he'll just clean up a few of those technical mistakes. imo
Because it us a tricky tack foul....

The 2nd half response was important.

Last year it would have been expected with the experience and leadership.

Lot of room for growth which is a good thing.

I recall a discussion several years back where BTO wanted the like button removed - thought it motivated folks to post for likes instead of thoughtful discussion
I remember the discussion, but I don't remember it being BTO that wanted them removed. I can't think of who it was.

Please don’t do this.

Pinterest already did.

Hey I may only get one a day, but if all likes goes away.......what else do I got?
